Hierarchical crystalline-amorphous nanocomposites with high strength and large deformability enabled by elemental diffusion

Amorphous/nanocrystalline dual-phase structures have recently emerged as an effective way for over-coming the strength-ductility trade-offand breaking the limitation of the reverse Hall-Petch ***,we proposed a new strategy to develop a hierarchical and interconnected amorphous-crystalline nanocomposite arising from the nanoscale elemental interdiffusion and oxygen adsorption behavior dur-ing thermal treatment *** nanocomposite consisted of a three-dimensional(3D)hierarchical network structure where the crystalline phase(cr-Co-Ni-Al)was embedded into the Al-O-based amor-phous phase network with critical feature sizes encompassing three orders of magnitude(from microm-eter to nanometer scale).It can achieve ultrahigh compression yield strength of-3.6 GPa with large homogeneous deformation of over 50%*** massive interstitial atoms induced lattice distortion and hierarchical amorphous phase boundary contributed to the strength *** situ Uniaxial compression inside a transmission electron microscope(TEM)revealed that the exceptional deformability of the nanocomposites resulted from the homogenous plastic flow of nano-sized amorphous phase and the plastic co-deformation behavior restricted by the nano-architected dual-phase *** proposed dual-phase synthesis approach can outperform conventional nanolaminates design strategies in terms of the mechanical properties achievable while providing a pathway to easily tune the microstructure of these nanolaminates.

Interaction of non-adherent suspended neutrophils to complement opsonized pathogens: a new assay using optical traps

Titanium(Ti)has been used for long in dentistry and medicine for implant *** the years,not only the commercially pure Ti but also some alloys such as binary and tertiary Ti alloys were *** aim of this review is to describe and compare the current literature on binary Ti alloys,including Ti-Zr,Ti-In,Ti-Ag,Ti-Cu,Ti-Au,Ti-Pd,Ti-Nb,Ti-Mn,Ti-Mo,Ti-cr,Ti-Co,Ti-Sn,Ti-Ge and Ti-Ga,in particular to mechanical,chemical and biological parameters related to implant *** was searched using the PubMed and Web of Science databases,as well as google without limiting the year,but with principle key terms such as‘Ti alloy’,‘binary Ti’,‘Ti-X’(with X is the alloy element),‘dental implant’and‘medical implant’.Only laboratory studies that intentionally for implant or biomedical applications were *** to available literatures,we might conclude that most of the binary Ti alloys with alloyingr,In,Ag,Cu,Au,Pd,Nb,Mn,cr,Mo,Sn and Co have high potential as implant materials,due to good mechanical performance without compromising the biocompatibility and biological behaviour compare to cp-Ti.

Performance Analysis of Dynamic Threshold Estimation Techniques Based on the One-Tier Cognitive radio Network

Cognitive radios (crs) use dynamic threshold estimation (DTE) techniques to better detect primary user signals under noise uncertainty regimes. However, DTE techniques have rarely been compared before, particularly under the one tier cr network (crN) model, making it difficult to assess their comparative performance characteristics under this regime. Thus, in this paper, we have investigated the performance of some notable DTE methods under the one-tier crN model. We used the auction game model in our investigation to compare fairly the spectrum efficiency performance of each technique. Our findings show that DTEs generally perform better than the fixed threshold method particularly under unpredictable noise uncertainty regimes. Our results show further that the channel utilization (CU) rate of the fixed threshold method, popularly used by researchers, plummets by 50.26% for a 1 dB increase in the noise uncertainty level, while the CU rate of the DTE techniques interestingly increased by an average of 4%. Our investigation will enable cr Engineers to better understand the performance characteristics of DTE techniques under the one-tier crN model.

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical devices,***,due to its biocompati-bility and osseointegration *** fact,fungal(Candida spp.)infection has been identified as one of the key reasons causing the failure of the device that is inevitable and impactful to the ***,this study evaluated the surface morphology,surface chemical composition and Candida albicans adhesion on specimens of 16 binary Tialloys(-5 wt%of any one of the alloy elements:Ag,AI,Au,Co,cr,Cu,Fe,In,Mn,Mo,Nb,Pd,Pt,Sn,V and Zr)compared with cp-Ti,targeting to seek for the binary Ti-alloys which has the lowest *** *** albicans cultures were grown on the specimens for 48 h,and colony forming units(CFUs)and real-time polymerase chain reaction(rT-Pcr)were used to evaluate the biofilm formation *** electron mi-croscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the formation of *** biofilm on all specimens'surfaces,such that CFU results showed Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have less *** formed on the surfaces than ***-Pcr showed Ti-Zr and Ti-Cu have significantly higher *** DNA concentrations than Ti-AI and Ti-V(Preas Ti-Cu has even showed a statistically higher concentration than Ti-Au,Ti-Co,Ti-In and Ti-Pt(Prmed that Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have lower the occurrence of *** which might be clinically advantageous for medical devices,but Ti-Cu should be used in caution.

A global overview of cranes: status, threats and conservation priorities

This paper reviews the population trends and threats for the 15 species of cranes, and comments on conservation priorities for the family as a whole. cranes occur on ifve continents, with greatest diversity in East Asia (nine species) and Sub-Saharan Africa (six species). Eleven crane species are threatened with extinction according to the IUCN red List, including one species critically En-dangered, three species Endangered, and seven species Vulnerable. Of the four species of Least Con-cern, population sizes for the Demoiselle (Anthropoides virgo) and Brolga (Grus rubicunda) are not well known but these species are declining in some areas. The Sandhill (G. canadensis) and Eurasian cranes (G. grus) are the most abundant cranes and have rapidly increased in part due to their lfexible selection of foraging habitats and use of agriculture lands and waste grain as a food source. Status for six species-Grey crowned (Balearica regulorum), Blue (Anthropoides paradise), Black-necked (G. nigricollis), red-crowned (G. japonensis), Sandhill, and Siberian (G. leucogeranus)-are summarized in more detail to illustrate the diversity of population shifts and threats within the crane family. A crane threat matrix lists the major threats, rates each threat for each species, and scores each threat for the crane family as a whole. Four of the ifve greatest threats are to the ecosystems that cranes depend upon, while only one of the top threats (human disturbance) relates to human action directly impact-ing on cranes. Four major threats are discussed:dams and water diversions, agriculture development, crane trade, and climate change. Conservation efforts should be strongly science-based, reduce direct threats to the birds, safeguard or restore habitat, and strengthen awareness among decision makers and local communities for how to safeguard cranes and wetlands.
