AIM:To analyze whether high-intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU) ablation is an effective bridging therapy for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS:From January 2007 to December 2010,49 consecutive HCC patients were listed for liver transplantation(UCSF criteria).The median waiting time for transplantation was 9.5 ***-nine patients received transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) as a bringing therapy and 16 patients received no treatment before *** patients received HIFU ablation as a bridging *** five patients with the same tumor staging(within the UCSF criteria) who received HIFU ablation but not on the transplant list were included for *** were comparable in terms of Child-Pugh and model for end-stage liver disease scores,tumor size and number,and cause of ***:The HIFU group and TACE group showed no difference in terms of tumor size and tumor *** patient in the HIFU group and no patient in the TACE group had gross *** median hospital stay was 1 d(range,1-21 d) in the TACE group and two days(range,1-9 d) in the HIFU group(P < 0.000).No HIFU-related complication *** the HIFU group,nine patients(90%) had complete response and one patient(10%) had partial response to the *** the TACE group,only one patient(3%) had response to the treatment while 14 patients(48%) had stable disease and 14 patients(48%) had progressive disease(P = 0.00).Seven patients in the TACE group and no patient in the HIFU group dropped out from the transplant waiting list(P = 0.559).CONCLUSION:HIFU ablation is safe and effective in the treatment of HCC for patients with advanced *** may reduce the drop-out rate of liver transplant candidate.

Mass-transfer studies of catalyst-aided CO_(2) absorption and desorption were performed in a full-cycle,bench-scale pilot plant to improve CO_(2) absorption using 5M MEA,5M MEA-2M MDEA and 2M BEA-2M AMP.A solid-base catalyst,K/MgO,and an acid catalyst,HZSM-5,were used to facilitate absorption and desorption,*** and desorption mass-transfer performance was presented in terms of the overall mass-transfer coefficient of the gas side(KGav)and liquid side(K_(L)a_(v)),*** non-catalytic runs,the highest K_(G)a_(V) and K_(L)a_(V) were 0.086 Kmol m^(3).*** and 0.7851 hr for 2M BEA-2M AMP *** results showed 38.7% KGav and 23.6% K_(L)a_(v) increase for 2M BEA-2M AMP with only HZSM-5 catalyst in desorber and a 95% K_(G)a_(V) and 45% K_(L)a_(V) increase for both K/MgO catalyst and HZSM-5 *** was attributed to the role of K/MgO in bonding loosely with CO_(2) and making it available for the amine reaction.

The electroreduction reaction of CO_(2)(ECO_(2)RR)requires high-performance catalysts to convert CO_(2)into useful *** metal-based atomically dispersed catalysts are promising for the high selectivity and activity in ECO_(2)*** work presents a series of atomically dispersed Co,Fe bimetallic catalysts by carbonizing the Fe-introduced Co-zeolitic-imidazolate-framework(C-Fe-Co-ZIF)for the syngas generation from ECO_(2)*** synergistic effect of the bimetallic catalyst promotes CO *** to the pure C-Co-ZiF,C-Fe-Co-ZIF facilitates CO production with a CO Faradaic efficiency(FE)boost of 10%,with optimal FE_(CO)of 51.9%,FE_(H_(2))of 42.4%at-0.55 V,and CO current density of 8.0 mA cm^(-2)at-0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE).The H_(2)/CO ratio is tunable from 0.8 to 4.2 in a wide potential window of-0.35 to-0.8 V versus *** total FE_(CO+H_(2))maintains as high as 93%over 10 *** proper adding amount of Fe could increase the number of active sites and create mild distortions for the nanoscopic environments of Co and Fe,which is essential for the enhancement of the CO production in ECO_(2)*** positive impacts of Cu-Co and Ni-Co bimetallic catalysts demonstrate the versatility and potential application of the bimetallic strategy for ECO_(2)RR.

Although methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, a folate enzyme gene, has been associated with idiopathic male infertility, few studies have examined other folate-related metabolites and genes. We investigated whether idiopathic male infertility is associated with variants in folate, vitamin B12 （B12） and total homocysteine （tHcy）-related genes and measured these metabolites in blood. We conducted a case-control study that included 153 men with idiopathic infertility and 184 fertile male controls recruited at the Fertility Center and Antenatal Care Center, University Hospital, Malmo and Lund, Sweden. Serum folate, red cell folate （RCF）, serum B12, plasma tHcy and semen quality were measured. Subjects were genotyped for 20 common variants in 12 genes related to folate/B12/ homocysteine metabolism. Metabolite concentrations and genotype distributions were compared between cases and controls using linear and logistic regression with adjustment for covariates. The phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase （PEMT） M 175V and TCblR rs173665 polymorphisms were significantly associated with infertility （P=0.01 and P=0.009, respectively）, but not with semen quality. Among non-users of supplements, infertile men had lower serum folate concentrations than fertile men （12.89 vs. 14.73 nmoll^- 1 P=0.02）, but there were no significant differences in RCF, B 12 or tHcy. Folate, B 12 and tHcy concentrations were not correlated with any semen parameters. This study provides little support for low folate or B12 status in the pathogenesis of idiopathic male infertility. Although additional data are needed to confirm these initial findings, our results suggest that PEMTand TCbIR, genes involved in choline and B12 metabolism, merit further investigation in idiopathic male infertility.

We investigated metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy grown(InGa)(AsSb)/GaAs/GaP Stranski–Krastanov quantum dots(QDs)with potential applications in QD-Flash memories by cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy(X-STM)and atom probe tomography(APT).The combination of X-STM and APT is a very powerful approach to study semiconductor heterostructures with atomic resolution,which provides detailed structural and compositional information on the *** rather small QDs are found to be of truncated pyramid shape with a very small top facet and occur in our sample with a very high density of∼4×10^(11) cm^(−2).APT experiments revealed that the QDs are GaAs rich with smaller amounts of In and *** element(FE)simulations are performed using structural data from X-STM to calculate the lattice constant and the outward relaxation of the cleaved *** composition of the QDs is estimated by combining the results from X-STM and the FE simulations,yielding∼In_(x)Ga_(1−x)As_(1−y)Sb_(y),where x=0.25–0.30 and y=0.10–***,the reported composition is in good agreement with the experimental results obtained by APT,previous optical,electrical,and theoretical analysis carried out on this material *** confirms that the InGaSb and GaAs layers involved in the QD formation have strongly intermixed.A detailed analysis of the QD capping layer shows the segregation of Sb and In from the QD layer,where both APT and X-STM show that the Sb mainly resides outside the QDs proving that Sb has mainly acted as a surfactant during the dot *** structural and compositional analysis provides a valuable insight into this novel QD system and a path for further growth optimization to improve the storage time of the QD-Flash memory devices.

Large-area manufacturing of flexible nanoscale electronics has long been sought by the printed electronics ***,the lack of a robust,reliable,high throughput and low-cost technique that is capable of delivering high-performance functional devices has hitherto hindered commercial *** we report on the extensive range of capabilities presented by adhesion lithography(a-Lith),an innovative patterning technique for the fabrication of coplanar nanogap electrodes with arbitrarily large aspect *** use this technique to fabricate a plethora of nanoscale electronic devices based on symmetric and asymmetric coplanar electrodes separated by a nanogap<15 *** show that functional devices including self-aligned-gate transistors,radio frequency diodes and rectifying circuits,multi-colour organic light-emitting nanodiodes and multilevel non-volatile memory devices,can be fabricated in a facile manner with minimum process complexity on a range of *** compatibility of the formed nanogap electrodes with a wide range of solution processable semiconductors and substrate materials renders a-Lith highly attractive for the manufacturing of large-area nanoscale opto/electronics on arbitrary size and shape substrates.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infections affect about 400 million people globally and cause about 1.4 million deaths annually. The virus displays high levels of genetic variations/mutations, some of which are immune escape mutants. The prevalence of HBV infection in Kenya is high at about 8%. This study aimed at identifying and characterizing HBV immune escape mutants in Kenya. From 547 HBV sequences available in Kenya in NCBI, and HBVdb databases in July 2021, 120 full sequences were retrieved. The S gene sequences at position 1-225, which included the “a” determinant region of the gene were analyzed using various bioinformatics tools such as Bioedit software, and Emboss Cons. The clinical significance was flagged from the search of peer-reviewed journals. Forty-six HBV-positive blood donor samples were obtained from the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Services without personal identifiers, DNA extracted, and sequenced targeting positions 1 to 520 of S genes. Mutations were similarly identified from seventeen sequences after cleaning and analysis. Out of 120 sequences that were extracted from databases and analyzed, 79 different mutations were identified. Fifteen of them were of clinical importance with an occurrence frequency of at least 5% were obtained. The majority (64.6%, n = 51), with S207N and A194V being most dominant, could result in immune escape and reduced HBsAg detection signals while 24.1% (n = 19) could result in immune escape/reduced HBsAg detection signals and high probability of hepatocellular carcinoma. Most likely to occur on the amino acids Alanine, Lysine, Serine, Asparagine, and Valine in decreasing order. The most dominant genotype was found to be Genotype A (N = 10), while four sequences were Genotype D. In contrast to the in-silico studies, the sequences from HBV samples from blood donors did not demonstrate the presence of S207N and A194V mutations and all the genotypes were type A1.
