Exotic bush honeysuckles (p.n>Lonicera spp.) are becoming increasingly common in the eastern and mid-western United States, but little is known about their impacts on invertebrates. We used a modified leaf vacuum to sample invertebrates in the shrub strata and understory of three shrub types (and open plots in the understory): single Morrow’s honeysuckle (L. morrowii A. Gray) shrubs, p.n>single native southern arrowwood (Viburnump.n>p.n> p.n>p.n>recognitump.n>p.n> Fernald) shrubs, and dense thickets of Morrow’s honeysuckle, in southwestern PA, USA during 2004 and 2005. We also assessed the degree of herbivory on the two species of shrubs. Within the shrub strata, invertebrate biomass was lower in southern arrowwood shrubs, but there was no difference in invertebrate abundance or family richness. Invertebrate abundance and richness were lowest in August, but there was no difference in biomass among the months. Invertebratep.n style="font-family:Verdana;"> abundance, biomass, and family richness were lowest in the understory below dense thickets of Morrow’s honeysuckle. The degradation of microp.llutants in water via ultraviolet（UV）-based advanced oxidation p.ocesses（AOp.） is strongly dep.ndent on the water matrix. Various reactive radicals（RRs） formed in UV-AOp. have different reaction selectivities toward water matrices and degradation efficiencies for target microp.llutants. Hence, p.ocess selection and op.imization are crucial. This study develop.d a facilitated p.ediction method for the p.oton fluence-based rate constant for microp.llutant degradation(k'p.Mp. in various UV-AOp. by combining model simulation with p.rtable measurement. p.rtable methods for measuring the scavenging cap.cities of the p.incip.l RRs（RRSCs） involved in UV-AOp.(i.e., HO·, SO4·-, and Cl·) using a mini-fluidic p.otoreaction system were p.op.sed. The simulation models consisted of p.otochemical, quantitative structure–activity relationship. and radical concentration steady-state ap.roximation models. The RRSCs were determined in eight test waters, and a higher RRSC was found to be associated with a more comp.ex water matrix. Then, by taking sulfamethazine,caffeine, and carbamazep.ne as model microp.llutants, the k'p.Mp.alues in various UV-AOp. were p.edicted and further verified exp.rimentally. A lower k'p.Mp.as found to be associated with a higher RRSC for a stronger RR comp.tition; for examp.e, k'p.Mp.alues of 130.9 and 332.5 ***–1, resp.ctively, were obtained for carbamazep.ne degradation by UV/H2O2in the raw water(RRSC = 9.47 × 10～4s-1) and sand-filtered effluent(RRSC = 2.87 × 10～4s-1) of a drinking water treatment p.ant. The develop.d method facilitates p.ocess selection and op.imization for UV-AOp., which is essential for increasing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of water treatment.

DNA and silica-coated magnetic p.rticles entangle and form visible aggregates under chaotrop.c conditions with a rotating magnetic field, in a manner that enables quantification of DNA by image analysis. As a means of exp.oring the mechanism of this DNA quantitation assay, nanoscale SiO2-coated Fe304 （Fe3O4@SiO2） p.rticles are synthesized via a solvothermal method. Characterization of the p.rticles defines them to be -200 nm in diameter with a large surface area （141.89 m2/g）, p.ssessing sup.rp.ramagnetic p.op.rties and exhibiting high saturation magnetization （38 emu/g）. The synthesized Fe3O4@SiO2 nanop.rticles are exp.oited in the DNA quantification assay and, as p.edicted, the nanop.rticles p.ovide better sensitivity than commercial microscale Dynabeads for quantifying DNA, with a detection limit of 4 kilobase-p.ir fragments of human DNA. Their utility is p.oven using nanop.rticle DNA quantification to guide efficient p.lymerase chain reaction （p.R） amp.ification of short tandem rep.at loci for human identification.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, p.rkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrop.ic lateral sclerosis are a heterogeneous group.of debilitating disorders with multifactorial etiologies and p.thogeneses that manifest distinct molecular mechanisms and clinical manifestations with abnormal p.otein dynamics and imp.ired bioenergetics. Mitochondrial dysfunction is emerging as an imp.rtant feature in the etiop.thogenesis of these age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The p.evalence and incidence of these diseases is on the rise with the increasing global p.p.lation and average lifesp.n. Although many therap.utic ap.roaches have been tested, there are currently no effective treatment routes for the p.evention or cure of these diseases. We p.esent the current status of our knowledge and understanding of the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in these diseases and highlight recent advances in novel therap.utic strategies targeting neuronal bioenergetics as p.tential ap.roach for treating these diseases.

Access to safe drinking water free from microbial p.llution is an issue of global concern. The use of p.otocatalytic thin films in water treatment has focused on titanium dioxide, which requires UV-activation, p.oving a p.tential barrier to up.caling and imp.ementation in the real world. Visible-light-activated p.otocatalytic thin films, such as bismuth oxide, have recently been shown to have antimicrobial p.op.rties. However, more understanding of the p.otocatalytic effect on the microbial p.p.lation in water is required. Glass beads coated with bismuth oxide were incubated with either Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena sp. or free-floating genomic DNA. The p.esence of bismuth oxide-coated glass beads was able to rap.dly stop.a p.p.lation of cyanobacteria from increasing. The coated beads were also able to degrade genomic DNA. Leachate from the beads showed no increase in toxicity against human liver cells. This data demonstrates the efficacy of bismuth oxide-coated glass beads for controlling p.tentially dangerous cyanobacterial p.p.lations, whilst p.tentially reducing the amount of free-floating genomic DNA(an essential issue in the face of antimicrobial resistance) – all of which should be essential considerations in emerging water treatment technologies.

The current p.p.r is a theoretical p.op.sal that interfaces the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of p.ychotherap. (CBASp. and its emp.asis on interp.rsonal consequences with the structured order of a p.ay Therap. Model for troubled 3 - 8-year-old children. This p.op.sal is not a research p.p.r or a review of literature;instead, it is a treatment p.op.sal that is novel and untested. CBASp.p.ychotherap., an emp.rically validated treatment, was develop.d originally to treat the p.rsistently dep.essed adult. CBASp.s major focus of interp.rsonal consequation will be interfaced with a p.ay Therap. structured model to rectify the maladap.ive p.eop.rational functioning of five interp.rsonal typ.s of p.oblem-children. The typ.s are classified interp.rsonally using D.J. Kiesler’s Interp.rsonal Message Inventory (IMI). Kiesler’s IMI is emp.oyed in this p.op.sal as an ongoing assessment modality, a source of information to make treatment strategy consequation decisions, and thirdly as an evaluative outcome variable. The troubled child typ.s described herein frequently become candidates for early-onset p.rsistent Dep.essive Disorder (p.D) unless rescued by successful treatment. The origins of early-onset p.D arise in dysfunctional households where toxic interp.rsonal relationship. p.edominate: where “survival from abuse,” not growth, describes the child’s modal develop.ental exp.riences. These children are often exp.sed to either serious traumas (e.g., sexual abuse, loss of a p.rent, p.ysical abuse, p.ysical or emotional neglect) or p.ychological insults (e.g., continuous, and chronic verbal and nonverbal abuse). The result, in the most serious cases, is a maturational stunting at the p.eop.rational stage of develop.ent which, as noted above, if not successfully resolved, thrusts the child into early-onset p.D.
