Temperature Inversions,Meteorological Variables and Air Pollutants and Their Influence on Acute Respiratory Disease in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Zone,Jalisco,Mexico

The presence of temperature inversions (TI), concentration of air pollutants (AP) and meteorological variables (MV) affect the welfare of the population, creating public health problems (acute respiratory diseases ARDs, among others). The Guadalajara Metropolitan Zone (GMZ) experiences high levels of air pollution, which associated with the presence of temperature inversions and meteorological variations is conducive to the incidence of ARDs in children. The aim of this work is to evaluate the TI, MV, AP and their influence on the ARDs in children under five years in the GMZ from 2003 to 2007. In this period, the moderate and strong TI are the most frequent presenting from November to May. The AP shows a variable behavior during the year and between years, with the highest concentration of particles less than 10 microns (PM10), followed by ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), carbon monoxide (CO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), the most affected areas are the southeast of the GMZ. Annual arithmetic mean is 213,510 ± 41,209 ARDs consultations. The most important diseases are acute respiratory infections (98.0%), followed by pneumonia and bronchopneumonia (1.1%), asthma and status asthmaticus (0.5%) and streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis (0.4%). Months with most inquiries were from October to March, mainly in the southeast, south and center of the city, coinciding with high levels of AP. Statistical analysis shows that the TI have significant correlation with ARDs in three years, temperature (Temp) in two, relative humidity (RH) in two, wind speed (WS) in three, wind direction (WD) in two, while that air pollutants NOX and NO2 showed significant correlation with ARDs throughout the period. CO and SO2 showed significance in two years, while the PM10 and O3 in one.

Expression of Heterosis and Heritability in Vegetative Traits of <i>Gongronema latifolia</i>

The existence of hybrid vigour with high heritability in vegetative traits of Gongronema latifolia will increase its productivity. This study was therefore undertaken to estimate heterosis and heritability in the vegetative traits of G. latifolia. Stem cuttings of five heterozygous parents of different geographical origin, and seeds of 10 hybrids resulting from their crosses were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications in a field. Data on the vegetative traits were obtained at the maximum growth period in each year of study and was used to estimate heterosis and heritability over the years. Better parent heterosis (BPH) ranged from -72% to 78% over three years. All the vegetative traits—with the exception of cordate base size—showed positive heterosis in a minimum of four cross combinations in two years. The cross AKS-33-EKPENE EDIENE X ANS-53-AWKA gave a higher BPH ranging from 5% to 6% in leaf area in the three years. The crosses ENS-48-MBU X IMS-50-NJIABA and ENS-48-MBU X ANS-53-AWKA gave higher BPH for leaf length and breadth for the first two years. All crosses showed positive and negative BPH for number of vines/plant and cordate base size, respectively. The hybrids ENS-48-MBU X IMS-50-NJIABA and EBS-49-ISHIAGU X IMS-50-NJIABA, with highly heritable BPH > 60 cm2 leaf area, will be selected in favour of other hybrids and parents. The selection of these hybrids will improve and maintain productivity in the species as the leaves are the harvestable part and the species is vegetatively propagated.

Effect of Organosolv Process on Structural Characteristics and Enzymatic Digestibility in Pinus Radiata Wood

The organosolv pretreatment was performed on Pinus radiata chips unbiotreated or biotreated by Gloephyllum trabeum. Its effect on the structural characteristics of the material and therefore in the effectiveness of the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation was evaluated. The influences of organic solvents, reaction time, and catalyst dose on the pulp yields and composition were evaluated and 17 pulps were obtained for each material. Pulp yields ranging from 29 to 47%, and the glucan recovery was up to 79% for organosolv pulp and 81% for biorganosolv pulp. Lignin and mannan+ galactan+ xylan removal reached values over 59 and 76%, respectively. Organosolv and biorganosolv processes decreased the crystallinity (CrI) and the polymerization degree (DP) of cellulose. Enzymatic hydrolysis of pulps presented values between 64 and 96%. Decreases in DP, CrI and in lignin and hemicellulose contents resulted in a better enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, the materials were submitted to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. The maximum ethanol yield was 66 and 64% (% of theoretical maximum yield of ethanol) for organosolv and bio-organosolv pulp, respectively. The maximum ethanol yield was obtained from pulp pretreated under less severe conditions and using a lower enzymatic load than used in previous studies on bioethanol production from P. radiata organosolv pulps. A viable alternative to bio-organosolv process that can be used is a bio-mimetic system, similar to low- molecular complexes generated by fungi combined with organosolv process.

DDT and Endosulfan are persistent organic compounds which have been prohibited and their use has been limited in agricultural activities due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation potential. The use of DDT in fumigation campaigns against endemic diseases transmitted by vectors of malaria and dengue was prohibited in Carmen Island, Campeche, Mexico since 1995. In the surroundings of Sabancuy Lagoon, many and diverse agricultural activities are carried out and it is a common practice to use organ-chlorine pesticides as endosulfan. In order to know the levels of these compounds in this area, a sediment sampling campaign was carried out in ten sampling points randomly located within the Sabancuy Lagoon, Campeche and considering one reference sampling point located 2 km away from Sabancuy Lagoon within the Mexican Gulf. Three metabolites were identified in sediments samples belonging to DDT’s family: (4,4’-DDD;4,4’-DDE;4,4’- DDT) and Endosulfan’s family (Endosulfan I, Endosulfan II y Endosulfan sulfate). Higher concentrations in DDT’s family were found for 4,4’-DDD, followed by 4,4’-DDE and 4,4’-DDT. Endosulfan’s family, showed the following order for concentrations: Endosulfan II > Endosulfan I > Endosulfan sulfate. Mean concentration for S-DDT and S-Endosulfan in Sabancuy Lagoon sediments was twice higher than those found in other studies carried out in Términos Lagoon, Campeche, Mexico in 2002.

Myopericarditis: Physiopathological Consideration and Image Diagnosis—A Case Report

Myocarditis is a disease whose diagnosis is based on the detection of inflammation. It is usually made by the finding of myocardium damage markers (usually troponin and CPK). Inflammation can also be detected in image tests. However, the low sensitivity and specificity of echocardiogram (which can be performed as a routine) make it less useful. We present a case in which the diagnosis was made by image (Cardiac Magnetic Resonance) which helped to clarify the evolution and the prognosis. The aim of this case is to show the importance of image technics in the diagnosis of myocarditis, while biomarkers alone can underestimate the inflammation and therefore the risk.

In-Vitro Evaluation of Resistance to Late Blight (Phytophthora infestans Mont. De Bary.) in Solanum Accessions Native to Chile, by Inoculation of Detached Leaflets

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the resistance of 10 accessions to P. infestans, by in-vitro inoculation of detached leaflets with a complex isolation of the fungus. Late blight, caused by the fungus Phytophthora infestans Mont. De Bary, is one of the most important diseases of the potato crop, and can destroy complete plantations in a short space of time. Chile is considered as a sub-centre of the origin of cultivated potatoes with many native potato varieties in the country. The different resistance components demonstrated that within the material of Chilean native Solanum, there was a wide range of variation to late blight. The resistant control (R-8906384) and the accessions UCT-34-Cor presented the lowest infection efficiency, small sizes of the lesions and low levels of sporulation classifying them as the most resistant. This suggests low efficiency of the infection and high resistance to penetration in these materials. The more susceptible accessions often presented a good level of resistance for one or few components. It would be of great interest to go into the genetic control of the different resistance components to know if the same level of resistance expressed for a component by different accessions is under the same genetic control or not.

自1984年4月至1999年8月,我们沿铁路轨道检测了农田中暮鼠(Calomys venustus)的多度,研究了种群密度、越冬种群结构和繁殖期长度之间的关系,发现种群具有增长、高数量和下降年份。将动物按照同生群(种群内在相同时间内出生的一些个体)分开,利用2×2列联表卡方检验对不同性别的越冬种群结构与数量(高数量和种群下降)间的关联性进行了分析。就高密度与种群密度下降年份中的同生群组成而言,不同密度的年份显示种群结构有显著差异。在数量增长和高密度的年份里,在繁殖季节的起始期,前一年秋季出生的个体比同年夏季出生的个体在数量上要占优势,而在同生群数量下降年份则相反,特别是雌性。高密度年份具有繁殖期缩短的特征,而种群增长年份繁殖期延长。结果表明,这些变化不能只归结于繁殖期长或繁殖率引起密度变化。我们的结论是:解释C·venustus种群消长不能仅考虑动物同生群本身,需要考虑其社会和环境因子的作用。
