Donor risk factors in pancreas transplantation

The aim of the work was to analyze and expose the donor and recipient riskfactors in pancreas transplantation. In the following paper, we exposed the 2018Spanish Consensus Document on Donor and Recipient Selection Criteria forPancreas Transplantation. An assessment of the previous Selection Criteria forDonors and Recipients of Pancreas Transplantation, published in 2005 by theSpanish Pancreas Transplant Group (GETP) and the National TransplantOrganization (ONT) was performed. A literature review was performed usingCochrane Library, PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Some of the followingterms were used for the literature search: “Diabetes Mellitus,” “PancreasTransplantation,” “Insulin-Secreting Cells,” “Pancreas Allograft Thrombosis,”“Allograft Pancreatitis,” “Donors’ Risk Factors,” “Recipients’ Risk Factors,”“Pancreas Allograft Rejection” and “Pancreas Allograft Survival.” After anextended search, different inclusion criteria were established. Articles anddocuments with abstracts of full text and in English or Spanish language wereselected. Subsequently, different scientific meetings took place during 2015 and2016 by the GETP. Finally, the updated criteria were published by the GETP andONT in 2018. Several risk factors have been described in pancreas transplantationthat can be divided into donor risk factors: Advanced age (> 50 years);high bodymass index (BMI) (> 30 kg/m2);cause of death (e.g., stroke);previoushyperglycemia;hyperamylasemia;cold ischemia time (greater than 8 or 12 h,depending on the type of donation);the use of vasopressors in the intensive careunit or cardiac arrest;and the macroscopic aspect of the pancreas allograft. Thefollowing are recipient risk factors: Advanced age (> 50 years);active smoking;high BMI (> 30 kg/m2);and peripheral artery disease or sensorimotorpolyneuropathy. The role of monoamines in modulating behavior

Understanding the mechanisms underlying complex behaviors requires a comprehensive investigation of the neurobiological factors that regulate and modulate their expression. Monoamines, such as serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, serve a variety of essential physiological roles in modulating animal behavior. Furthermore, the evolutionary conservation of these aminergic systems spans across both vertebrates and invertebrates, having comparable effects in such diverse processes as learning and memory, aggression, mating behaviors and reproduction, stress responses, locomotion, and collective social behaviors (Dishman 1997; Libersat and Pflueger 2004; Kamhi and Traniello 2013; Bubak et al. 2014a; De Boer et al. 2015). Outstanding research is currently being conducted in this field, uncovering remarkable similarities in neural circuitries even among highly divergent taxa, such as Drosophila and humans. Investigating the neural mechanisms involved in the monoaminergic modulation of behavior across a variety of taxonomically distant species can provide researchers with a better understanding of the origins and functions of these systems. The goal of this special issue is to provide a venue in which colleagues studying similar questions across highly divergent animal systems can present their recent and groundbreaking work in this exciting area of biology. We hope this collection of papers will encourage and stimulate a dialogue on the similarities of monoaminergic function in a wide variety of animals and ultimately promote future comparative approaches when investigating behavioral modulation.

Defensive pressure affects basketball technical actions but not the time-motion variables

Background: Novel player tracking technologies can change the understanding of performance determinants in team sports by allowing to accurately measuring the activity demands. The aim of this study was to identify how the defensive pressure affects the time-motion variables and the technical actions in ***: Twenty international male players(age: 16.05 ± 2.09 years, weight: 73.13 ± 8.10 kg, height: 183.10 ± 5.88 cm) played two 10 min basketball quarters, where they used a man-to-man 1/4-court defense until the 4th min(F1/4), changed to man-to-man full court(FULL) for 3 min and, from the 7th to the 10 th min returned to 1/4-court defense(S1/4). A computerized notational analysis was performed using Simi Scout and positional data were captured with the Ubisense Real Time Location System(mean sampling rate 3.74 ± 0.45 Hz per transmitter/player).Results: The time-motion variables presented similar results between defensive conditions, showing a total distance covered around 90 m/***, results suggested possible vertical jump impairments in S1/4 periods. There was more distance covered while jogging in the offensive court(38.15 ± 12.17 m/min offensive court vs. 32.94 ± 10.84 m/min defensive court, p < 0.05) and more distance covered while running in the defensive court(16.41 ± 10.27 m/min offensive court vs. 19.56 ± 10.29 m/min defensive court, p < 0.05).Conclusion: These results suggest how to improve task representativeness during specific conditioning or game-based training situations and also to help coaches' strategic decisions during the games.

Appropriateness of the study of iron deficiency anemia prior to referral for small bowel evaluation at a tertiary center

AIM To evaluate the adequacy of the study of iron deficiency anemia(IDA)in real life practice prior to referral to a gastroenterology department for small bowel *** All consecutive patients referred to a gastroenterology department for small bowel investigation due to iron deficiency anemia,between January 2013 and December2015 were *** patients referred from general practitioners or directly from different hospital departments were *** clinical information regarding prior anemia workup was retrospectively collected from medical *** appropriate pre-referral study was considered the execution of esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD)with Helicobacter pylori(***)investigation,colonoscopy with quality standards(recent,total and with adequate preparation)and celiac disease(CD)screening(through serologic testing and/or histopathological investigation).RESULTS A total of 77 patients(58.4% female,mean age 67.1±16.7 years)were ***(53.2%)patients were referred from general practitioners,41.6% from other hospital specialties and 5.2% directly from the emergency *** mean pre-referral hemoglobin concentration was 8.8±2.0 g/d L and the majority of anemias had microcytic(71.4%)and hypochromic(72.7%)characteristics.77.9%of patients presented with an incomplete pre-referral study:EGD in 97.4%,with *** investigation in 58.3%,colonoscopy with quality criteria in 63.6%,and CD screening in 24.7%.Patients with an appropriate study at the time of referral were younger(48.7±17.7 vs 72.3±12.3 years,P<0.001).Small bowel evaluation was ultimately undertaken in 72.7%of patients,with a more frequent evaluation in patients with a quality colonoscopy at referral(78.6%vs 23.8%);P<0.001(OR=11.7,95%CI:3.6-38.6).The most common diagnosis regarded as the likely cause of IDA was small bowel angioectasia(18.2%)but additional causes were also found in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts of near 20% of *** bowel stud

Enhanced thermoelectric properties of topological crystalline insulator PbSnTe nanowires grown by vapor transport

Bulk PbTe and alloy compounds thereof are well-known thermoelectric materials for electric power generation. Among these alloys, PbSnTe hosts unique topological surface states that may have improved thermoelectric properties. Here we report on the vapor-transport growth and thermoelectric study of high-quality single-crystalline PbTe and PbSnTe nanowires. The nanowires were grown along the 〈001〉 direction with dominant {100} facets; the chemical compositions of the wires depend strongly on the substrate position in the growth reactor. We measured the thermopower and electrical and thermal conductivities of individual nanowires to determine the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. Compared to bulk samples, the PbSnTe nanowires showed both improved thermopower and suppressed thermal conductivity, enhancing the ZTs to -0.018 and N0.035 at room temperature. The enhanced thermopower may result from the unique topological surface states; the suppression of thermal conductivity may relate to increased phonon-surface scattering. Compared to PbTe nanowires, the PbSnTe wires have lower thermopower but significantly higher electrical conductivities. This study highlights nanostructuring in combination with alloying as an important approach to enhancing the figure of merit ZT of thermoelectric materials.

Varicocele is a common medical condition entangled with many controversies. Though it is highly prevalent in men with infertility, still it marks its presence in males who do have normal fertility. Determining which patients are negatively affected by varicocele would enable clinicians to better select those men who benefitted the most from surgery. Since conventional semen analysis has been limited in its ability to evaluate the negative effects of varicocele on fertility, a multitude of specialized laboratory tests have emerged. In this review, we examine the role and significance of specialized sperm function tests with regards to varicocele. Among the various tests, analysis of sperm DNA fragmentation and measurements of oxidative stress markers provide an independent measure of fertility in men with varicocele. These diagnostic modalities have both diagnostic and prognostic information complementary to, but distinct from conventional sperm parameters. Test results can guide management and aid in monitoring intervention outcomes. Proteomics, metabolomics, and genomics are areas; though still developing, holding promise to revolutionize our understanding of reproductive physiology, including varicocele.
