Dear Editor,Antibiotics are considered indispensable in numerous treatments against infectious ***,their over-prescription and widespread use are emerging as important global issues,as they lead to resistant bacteria,reducing the efficacy of antibiotics[1].The defined daily doses per 1,000 habitants per day for antibiotics in South korea is 28,which is much higher than the average of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries[1].In animal studies,antibiotic tigecycline was found to inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)cells[2].In addition,isoprenoid antibiotic was found to suppress the growth and invasion of HCC by targeting the signal transducer and activator of the transcription 3 signaling cascade[3].Despite evidence of the beneficial effects of antibiotics against HCC,evidence regarding their effects on the longterm development of HCC is *** regarding the incidence of HCC is provided in the Supplementary file.

Recently,we have reported that Oenanthe javanica extract(OJE)displays strong neuroprotective effect against ischemic damage after transient global cerebral ***,neuroprotective mechanisms of OJE have not been fully ***,this study investigated the neuroprotection of OJE in the hippocampal CA1 area and its anti-inflammatory activity in gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient global cerebral *** treated the animals by intragastrical injection of OJE(100 and 200 mg/kg)once daily for 1 week prior to transient global cerebral *** of OJE was observed by immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclear antigen and histofluorescence staining for Fluoro-Jade *** of glial fibrillary acidic protein and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 was done for astrocytosis and microgliosis,*** investigate the neuroprotective mechanisms of OJE,we performed immunohistochemistry of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-2 for pro-inflammatory function and interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 for anti-inflammatory *** we treated the animals by intragastrical administration of 200 mg/kg of OJE,hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons were protected from transient global cerebral ischemia and cerebral ischemia-induced gliosis was inhibited in the ischemic hippocampal CA1 *** also found that interleukin-4 and-13 immunoreactivities were significantly increased in pyramidal neurons of the ischemic CA1 area after OJE pretreatment,and the increased immunoreactivities were sustained in the CA1 pyramidal neurons after transient global cerebral ***,OJE pretreatment did not increase interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha immunoreactivities in the CA1 pyramidal *** findings suggest that pretreatment with OJE can protect neurons and attenuate gliosis from transient global cerebral ischemia via increasing expressions of interleukin-4 *** experimental plan of this study was rev

好氧生物反应器加速渗滤液及垃圾稳定进程研究

针对垃圾厌氧生物反应器填埋中存在的酸化阶段过长、渗滤液氨氮积累等问题,采用实验室模拟填埋柱研究了上层曝气式生活垃圾好氧生物反应器在加速渗滤液污染物降解和加速垃圾稳定方面的效果。试验共设置4根填埋柱,其中厌氧生物反应器(C1)为对照,上层曝气式好氧生物反应器(C2、C3、C4)为实验组。各反应器每天回灌渗滤液,C2、C3、C4曝气时间分别设为2、4和8 h/d。结果表明,上层曝气式生物反应器能显著缩短酸化阶段所需时间,加速渗滤液有机污染物的降解。至实验结束时,各好氧生物反应器COD、BOD5均比实验开始时降低90%以上。此外,延长曝气时间,能够显著加速渗滤液含氮物质的的降解,至实验结束时,C3、C4渗滤液氨氮浓度分别降至99、39 mg/L,远低于同时期的C1和C2反应器。实验结束时,C1、C2、C3、C4垃圾沉降比分别为7.1%、8.6%、17.1%和21.4%,表明延长曝气时间有助于加速垃圾沉降,提高填埋场有效库容。

Safety and efficacy of tenofovir in chronic hepatitis B-related decompensated cirrhosis

AIM To evaluate the safety and efficacy of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF) as a first-line therapy in decompensated liver disease. METHODS We enrolled 174 chronic hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis patients treated with 300 mg/d TDF at six korean centers. Of the 174 cirrhosis patients, 57 were assigned to the decompensated cirrhosis group and 117 were assigned to the compensated cirrhosis group. We followed the patients for 12 mo and evaluated clinical outcomes, including biochemical, virological, and serological responses. We also evaluated changes in hepatic and renal function and compared the decompensated and compensated cirrhosis groups. RESULTS The 1-year complete virological response(CVR) and Hepatitis B e antigen(HBe Ag) seroconversion were seen in 70.2% and 14.2% in the decompensated cirrhosis group, respectively. The rates of HBe Ag seroconversion/loss and ALT normalization at month 12 were similar in both groups. TDF treatment was also effective for decreasing the level of hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA in both groups, but CVR was higher in the compensated group(88.9% vs 70.2%, P = 0.005). Tenofovir treatment for 12 mo resulted in improved Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) and model for end-stage liver disease(MELD) scores in decompensated group(P < 0.001). Of the 57 decompensated patients, 39(68.4%) achieved CTP class A and 27(49.1%) showed improvement in the CTP score of 2 points after 12 mo of TDF. The observed rate of confirmed 0.5 mg/d L increases in serum levels of creatinine in the decompensated and compensated cirrhosis group were 7.0% and 2.5%, respectively(P < 1.000).CONCLUSION TDF therapy in decompensated cirrhosis patients was effective for decreasing HBV DNA levels and improving hepatic function with relatively lower CVR than in compensated cirrhosis. Thus, physicians should carefully monitor not only renal function but also treatment responses when using TDF in decompensated cirrhosis patients.

Regulatory T （Treg） cells play a central role in regulating peripheral immune tolerance and preventing autoimmunity. Despite the extensive studies on the development of Treg cells, the molecular mechanisms that maintain the population of committed Treg cells remain poorly understood. We show here that Treg-conditional ablation of the kinase TAK1 reduced the number of Treg cells in the peripheral lymphoid organs, causing abnormal activation of conventional T cells and autoimmune symptoms. Using an inducible gene knockout approach, we further demonstrate that TAK1 is crucial for the survival of Treg cells. Expression of a constitutively active IKB kinase partially restored the level of Treg cells in the TAKITreg-ko mice. These results suggest a crucial role for TAK1 for maintaining the survival of committed Treg cells under physiololzical conditions.

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia with generalized warts

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia(PIL) is a rare protein-losing enteropathy with lymphatic leakage into the small intestine. Dilated lymphatics in the small intestinal wall and mesentery are observed in this disease. Laboratory tests of PIL patients revealed hypoalbuminemia, lymphocytopenia, hypogammaglobulinemia and increased stool α-1 antitrypsin clearance. Cell-mediated immunodeficiency is also present in PIL patients because of loss of lymphocytes. As a result, the patients are vulnerable to chronic viral infection and lymphoma. However, cases of PIL with chronic viral infection, such as human papilloma virus-induced warts, are rarely reported. We report a rare case of PIL with generalized warts in a 36-year-old male patient. PIL was diagnosed by capsule endoscopy and colonoscopic biopsy with histological tissue confirmation. Generalized warts were observed on the head, chest, abdomen, back, anus, and upper and lower extremities, including the hands and feet of the patient.

Clinical and ABCB11 profiles in korean infants with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis

AIM: To investigate clinical profiles and mutations of ABCB11 in koreans with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis 2 and review the differences between koreans and ***: Of 47 patients with neonatal cholestasis, five infants had chronic intrahepatic cholestasis with normal γ-glutamyl transpeptidase. Direct sequencing analyses of ABCB11, including exons and introns, were performed from peripheral ***: Living donor-liver transplantation was performed in four patients because of rapidly progressive hepatic failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. Three missense mutations were found in two patients: compound heterozygous 677C>T(S226L)/3007G>A(G1003R) and heterozygous 2296G>A(G766R). The mutations were located near and in the transmembranous space. CONCLUSION: Alterations in the transmembrane of the bile salt export pump in the korean infants were different from those previously reported in Chinese, Japanease, Taiwan Residents, and European patients.

POSCO has developed CEM(Compact Endless casting and rolling Mill) process, which is based on high casting speed with 6 m/min and endless rolling from mold meniscus to down coiler. Mechanical design improvement and high speed technology development have been achieved through various efforts such as the molten flow control in the mold, water cooling in the caster and the mold level hunting control. For stable change of coil thickness and width during endless rolling, the control software of casting and rolling have been reinforced continuously against a lot of abnormal situation. Owing to the stable endless rolling technology, the production ratio of thin gauge HR coils was increased significantly to 70% but, on the contrary, the cobble ratio in the rolling region was greatly decreased. Because the temperature and the speed of the strip are constant during endless rolling in finishing mill region, and it makes easy to control the strip temperature to produce AHSS in the run out table.
