Reconstruction of Rabbit Corneal Layer Composed of Corneal Fibroblasts and Corneal Epithelium on the Lyophilized Amniotic Membrane

Many researchers have employed the cryopreserved amniotic membrane（CAM） and corneal epithelial cells in the treatment of a severely damaged burned cornea, with corneal epithelial cells cultured on an amniotic membrane （AM）. The lyophilized amniotic membrane（LAM） has a higher graft take and a longer shelf life; it is easier to store and safer because of gamma irradiation. Two Teflon rings（ Ahn＇s supporter） were made for culturing the cells on the LAM, and were then used to support the LAM. To reconstruct a corneal layer composed of corneal fibroblasts and epithelium, the corneal fibroblasts were first cultivated on the stromal side of LAM for five days, foUowed by epithelial cells culture on the epithelial side, by using the air-liquid interface culture. The reconstructed corneal layer composed of corneal fibroblasts and corneal epithelial cells has a much healthier basal layer of corneal epithelium than the reconstructed corneal epithelium, which was got by using only corneal epithelial cells, and resembles the epithelium of normal corneas, without the horny layer. Thus, the reconstruction of the corneal layer by using a LAM is considered to be a good in vitro model, not only for its application in toxicological test kits, but also for transplantation in patients with a severely damaged cornea.

Valorising Ikseon-dong’s Hanok residence as a heritage place

This study aims to create a basis for sustainable conservation by identifying the heritage value of 166 *** on old land registers and cadastral maps of the 1920s and 1930s,it interpreted the construction procedure,social background,and urban architectural characteristics of the road and plot subdivision of the modern Hanok ***-dong Hanok produced four types of ground plans based on the grid-street *** study argues that these innovative experiments have already been attempted through Bak young-hyo’s proposals in his Geonbaekseo and the architectural activities of Jeong Segwon,and that the idea of applying various housing types,layouts,and grid-street system planning was embodied through the development of the Hanok complex in ***,this attempt greatly influenced the design of other Hanok complexes built in colonial Gyeongseong after 1936,taking the Ikseon-dong Hanok as a role *** radiation of new perspectives will be a groundwork for the future sustainable conservation of heritage places.

Chemical composition and antioxidant capacity of the aqueous extract of Phellodendron amurense

The aqueous extract of Phellodendron amurense Rupr. （Amur Cork Tree） provides a rich source of antioxidants and chemical compounds, and can be used for food and wood preservative materials. In this study, we characterized the chemical composition of this extract by GC and GC/MS. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated using a variety of antioxidant assays （superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide radical, and DPPH radical scavenging activity）. Additionally, total polyphenolic content was determined. Phenolic acids and acetone derivatives were major compounds of the extract capable of scavenging the DPPH free radical and reducing ferric ions. DPPH and ferric ion reduction results were strongly correlated with total phenolic content of the extract which also exhibited strong nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical scavenging and superoxide anion radical scavenging activities.

Structural stability estimation of whirling unit

Whirling is a cutting process in which a series of cutting edges on whirling ring remove material by turning over a rotating workpiece. In this study static and dynamic stability of whirling unit was estimated by using ADAMS and NASTRAN softwares. Each maximum force acting on the bearing attached to the spindle assembly and the cutting tool attached to the whirling ring with the rotating speed of 6 000 r/min was 235 N and 902 N respectively. The maximum stress of 0.74 MPa on the base frame is far smaller than the yield strength of 282 MPa. The calculated natural frequency of 148 Hz of the system is far from the frequency of the driving speed of 6 000 r/min. The experimentally obtained maximum cutting force of 792 N is smaller than that of calculated value. And the experimentally obtained natural frequency of 118 Hz is beyond the driving speed of 6000 r/min. From above results it can be judged that the whirling system is statically and dynamically stable.

Wolf phase tomography(WPT) of transparent structures using partially coherent illumination

Efficacy of cap-assisted endoscopy for routine examining the ampulla of Vater

AIM: To determine the efficacy of a cap-assisted endoscopy (CAE) to completely visualize the ampulla of Vater (AV) in patients failed by conventional endoscopy. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 120 patients > 20 years of ages who visited the Health Promotion Center of Chungbuk National University Hospital for conscious sedation esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) as a screening test from July to October, 2011. First, forward-viewing endoscopy was performed with reasonable effort using a push and pull method. We considered complete visualization of the AV when we could observe the entire AV including the orifice clearly, and reported the observation as complete or incomplete (partial or not found at all). Second, in cases of complete failure of the observation, an additional AV examination was conducted by attaching a short cap (D-201-10704, Olympus Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan) to the tip of a forward-viewing endoscope. Third, if the second method failed, we replaced the short cap with a long cap (MH-593, Olympus Medical Systems) and performed a re-examination of the AV. RESULTS: Conventional endoscopy achieved complete visualization of the AV in 97 of the 120 patients (80.8%) but was not achieved in 23 patients (19.2%). Age (mean ± SD) and gender [male (%)] were not significantly different between the complete observation and the incomplete observation groups. Additional short CAE was performed in patients in whom we could not completely visualize the AV. This group included 13 patients (10.9%) with partial observation of the AV and 10 (8.3%) in which the AV was not found. Short CAE permitted a complete observation of the AV in 21 of the 23 patients (91.3%). Patients in whom visualization of the AV failed with short CAE had satisfactory outcomes by replacing the short cap with a long cap. The additional time for CAE took an average of 141 ± 88 s. Toxocara optic neuropathy: clinical features and ocular findings

We evaluated thirteen eyes of twelve patients diagnosed clinically and serologically with Toxocara optic neuropathy. Eleven patients had unilateral involvement and one patient had bilateral optic neuropathy. Eight patients （66.7%） had a possible infection source to Toxocara. Six patients （50%） had painless acute optic neuropathy. Ten eyes had asymmetric, sectorial optic disc edema with peripapillary infiltration and three eyes had diffuse optic disc edema. Eosinophilia was noted in five patients （41.7%） and optic nerve enhancement was observed in eight of eleven eyes （72.7%） with available orbit magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）. Mean visual acuity significantly improved following treatment [mean logarithmic of the minimum angle of resolution （IogMAR） 0.94±0.56 at baseline and 0.47±0.59 at the final （P=0.02）]. Asymmetric optic disc edema with a peripapillary lesion and a history of raw meat ingestion were important clues for diagnosing Toxocara optic neuropathy. Additionally, Toxocara IgG enzymelinked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） test and evaluating eosinophil may be helpful for diagnosis.

Comparative study of chitosan/fibroin–hydroxyapatite and collagen membranes for guided bone regeneration in rat calvarial defects: micro-computed tomography analysis

This study aimed to utilize micro-computed tomography （micro-CT） analysis to compare new bone formation in rat calvarial defects using chitosan/fibroin-hydroxyapatite （CFB-HAP） or collagen （Bio-Gide） membranes. Fifty-four （54） rats were studied. A circular bony defect （8 mm diameter） was formed in the centre of the calvaria using a trephine bur. The CFB-HAP membrane was prepared by thermally induced phase separation. In the experimental group （n= 18）, the CFB-HAP membrane was used to cover the bony defect, and in the control group （n= 18）, a resorbable collagen membrane （Bio-Gide） was used. In the negative control group （n= 18）, no membrane was used. In each group, six animals were euthanized at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. The specimens were then analysed using micro-CT. There were significant differences in bone volume （BV） and bone mineral density （BMD）（P〈O.05） between the negative control group and the membrane groups. However, there were no significant differences between the CFB-HAP group and the collagen group. We concluded that the CFB-HAP membrane has significant potential as a guided bone regeneration （GBR） membrane.

Electrical and Corrosion Properties of Titanium Aluminum Nitride Thin Films Prepared by Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition

Titanium-aluminum-nitride（TiAlN） films were grown by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition（PEALD）on 316 L stainless steel at a deposition temperature of 200 °C. A supercycle, consisting of one AlN and ten TiN subcycles, was used to prepare TiAlN films with a chemical composition of Ti（0.25）Al（0.25）N（0.50）. The addition of AlN to TiN resulted in an increased electrical resistivity of TiAlN films of 2800 μΩ cm, compared with 475 μΩ cm of TiN films, mainly due to the high electrical resistivity of AlN and the amorphous structure of TiAlN. However, potentiostatic polarization measurements showed that amorphous TiAlN films exhibited excellent corrosion resistance with a corrosion current density of 0.12 μA/cm^2, about three times higher than that of TiN films, and about 12.5 times higher than that of 316 L stainless steel.
