Sodium nitrite-derived nitric oxide protects rat testes against ischemia/reperfusion injury

Testicular torsion,a common urologic emergency,is primarily caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)injury of the *** oxide (NO)-derived from nitrite (NO2-)has been reported to have prominent therapeutic effects on I/R injury in the heart,liver,and brain;however,its effects on testicular I/R injury have not been *** study,therefore,investigated whether NO from NO2^-is beneficial in a rat model of testicular I/R injury which eventually results in impaired *** Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to the following seven groups:group A,sham-operated control group;Group B,I/R with no treatment;Groups C, D,and E,I/R followed by treatment with three different doses of NO2^-;Group F,I/R followed by administration of NO2-and NO scavenger (2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-l-oxyl-3-oxide potassium salt [C-PTIO]);and Group G,I/R followed by administration of nitrate (NO3^-).NO2^-,NO3^-,and C-PTIO were intravenously *** examination of the testes and the western blot analysis of caspase-3 were *** of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation were measured. Germ cell apoptosis,oxidative stress,antioxidant enzymatic function,and lipid peroxidation in Group B were significantly higher than those in Group *** B exhibited an abnormal testicular morphology and impaired *** contrast,testicular damages were attenuated in the NO2^-treatment groups,which were caused by reduction in superoxide and peroxynitrite levels and an inhibition of caspase-3-dependent *** results of this study suggest NO2^-to be a promising therapeutic agent with anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic properties in testicular I/R injury.

Fault area estimation using traveling wave for wide area protection

As the increasing number of Phasor Measurement Units(PMUs) are deployed, wide area protection in power systems has been gaining interest. In particular, fault detection, fault classification and fault area estimation are essential to reduce the damage of faults, and even prevent catastrophic cascades of failures. In this paper, we present a scheme for fault area estimation using PMUs and traveling wave theory. The purpose of this paper is to formulate a scheme for fault area estimation by calculating the approximate fault location based on traveling wave *** research has targeted at reliable operation of wide transmission system through the estimation of fault *** verify the suggested scheme, the various simulations are performed in practical Korean power transmission *** simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a good performance with high accuracy for estimating fault area.

Spectroscopic Understanding of Structural and Electrical Property Variations in Dopant-Free ZnO Films

Physical property variation in dopant-free ZnO films was investigated. Film annealing under various environments（O_2, in-Air, N2 and vacuum） resulted in better crystallinity than in the as-grown film. In particular, the film annealed under the N_2 environment showed better crystallinity and electrical properties than films annealed in other environments. Based on spectroscopic analysis, we found a correlation between physical（structural, electrical） and chemical properties： The crystallinity of ZnO films is closely related to ZnO bonding, whereas carrier concentration is associated with VO（oxygen vacancy）.

Liquid-like adsorbent assembled by CNTs: Serving as renewable CO_(2) capture materials for indoor air

In this study,a CO_(2) capture material in the form of liquid-like adsorbents(LLAs) is developed to overcome the limitations of conventional types of *** increase in indoor activities necessitates the capture of CO_(2) in enclosed indoor *** spaces require safe and stable materials for CO_(2) capture because humans are present in these *** adsorbents are mainly used because liquid absorbents are unsuitable owing to noise and scattering *** LLA,the liquid absorbent assembled by carbon nanotubes(CNTs) is solidified and prevented from flowing and scattering *** present to maintain 95% of initial capacity after recycling 20 times,and have characteristics that can be regenerated in a low temperature heat source(80 to 120℃) and moisture *** work not only provides indoor useable CO_(2) capture materials,but also offers a new prospect in the field of adsorbents.

Removal of arsenate and arsenite from aqueous solution by waste cast iron

The removal of As（III） and As（V） from aqueous solution was investigated using waste cast iron, which is a byproduct of the iron casting process in foundries. Two types of waste cast iron were used in the experiment： grind precipitate dust （GPD） and cast iron shot （CIS）. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the presence of Fe~ on GPD and CIS. Batch experiments were performed under different concentrations of As（III） and As（V） and at various initial pH levels. Results showed that waste cast iron was effective in the removal of arsenic. The adsorption isotherm study indicated that the Langmuir isotherm was better than the Freundlich isotherm at describing the experimental result. In the adsorption of both As（III） and As（V）, the adsorption capacity of GPD was greater than CIS, mainly due to the fact that GPD had higher surface area and weight percent of Fe than CIS. Results also indicated the removal of As（III） and As（V） by GPD and CIS was influenced by the initial solution pH, generally decreasing with increasing pH from 3.0 to 10.5. In addition, both GPD and CIS were more effective at the removal of As（III） than As（V） under given experimental conditions. This study demonstrates that waste cast iron has potential as a reactive material to treat wastewater and groundwater containing arsenic.

Potentiating activity of rhein in targeting of resistance genes in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Objective: To investigate the synergistic effect between rhein(RHE) and oxacillin against Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) at the gene level. Method: A minimum inhibitory concentration and checkerboard dilution test were conducted to evaluate antibacterial activity. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was conducted to investigate the gene expressions. Results: RHE exhibited a minimum inhibitory concentration of 62.5-250.0 μg/mL against various MRSA strains and the reference strain, respectively. As revealed by the checkerboard assay, a combination of RHE and oxacillin exhibited synergistic or partially synergistic effects against MRSA strains. RHE decreased the expressions of mecA/blaZ in a dose-dependent manner. RHE also decreased the expressions of the regulator genes mecI/blaI and mecR1/blaR1. Conclusions: We suggest that RHE affects the activity of mecR1/blaR1, which is located in the cell membrane of MRSA and results in the suppression of mecA/mecI/mecR1 and blaZ/blaI/blaR1 gene expressions.

Portal hypertension causes portosystemic shunting along the gastrointestinal tract,resulting in *** varices and their bleeding is a rare complication,but it can be fatal without appropriate ***,because of its rarity,no established treatment strategy is yet *** the setting of intractable rectal variceal bleeding,a transjugular intravenous portosystemic shunt can be a treatment of choice to enable portal decompression and thus achieve ***,in the case of recurrent rectal variceal bleeding despite successful transjugular intravenous portosystemic shunt,alternative measures to control bleeding are ***,we report on a patient with liver cirrhosis who experienced recurrent rectal variceal bleeding even after successful transjugular intravenous portosystemic shunt and was successfully treated with variceal embolization.

Statistical Methods for Classification of Medicinal Plants

Statistical classification methods are frequently applied to analyze metabolomics data, especially from medicinal plants. Combined with variable selection techniques, we are able to identify marker candidates, which can be used to discriminate the group to which unknown subjects belong. After preprocessing, such as outlier checking, normalization, missing value imputation and transformation, we then mainly utilized four novel classification methods： RF （random forest）, NSC （nearest shrunken centroid）, PLS-DA （partial least square discriminant analysis） and SAM （significant analysis ofmicroarrays）. Each method has its own device to measure the importance of single metabolite, so that, it is probable to choose highly ranked metabolites, which show the best prediction accuracy. Adapting above strategy, we have successfully analyzed several kinds of metabolomics data including Panax ginseng, Lespedeza species, Anemarrhean asphodeloides and Gastrodia elata.

Development of Performance Evaluation Technique for Shell-Tube Heat Exchangers

As the operation time of heat exchanger is increased, the thermal performance of them is gradually degraded due to fouling generated by water-borne deposits which are known to reduce the thermal efficiencies. Currently, thermal performance management of heat exchangers is more importantly issued for long term operation. Therefore, the performance evaluation techniques are required to improve the present method for the integrity evaluation of heat exchangers because of the exclusion of fouling calculation and the uncertainty analysis. This paper describes the developed thermal performance evaluation technique applied to the safety-related heat exchangers such as component cooling heat exchangers in a nuclear power plants.

We propose a near-eye display optics system that supports three-dimensional mutual *** exploiting the polarization-control properties of a phase-only liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS),we achieve real see-through scene masking as well as virtual digital scene imaging using a single *** depth control of the real scene mask and virtual digital image is also achieved by using a focus tunable lens (FTL) pair of opposite *** proposed configuration using a single LCoS and opposite curvature FTL pair enables the self-alignment of the mask and image at an arbitrary depth without distorting the see-through view of the real *** verified the feasibility of the proposed optics using two optical benchtop setups:one with two off-the-shelf FTLs for continuous depth control,and the other with a single Pancharatnam–Berry phase-type FTL for the improved form factor.
