Cardiovascular diseases in general and atherothrombosis as the most common of its individualdisease entities is the leading cause of death in the developed ***,visualizationand characterization of inner arterial plaque composition is of vital diagnostic interest,especilly for the early recognition of vulnerable *** clinical techniques provide valuablemorphological information but cannot deliver information about the chemicai composition ofindividual ***,spectroscopic imaging techniques have recently drawn consider-able *** on the spectroscopic properties of the individual plaque components,as forinstance diferent types of lipids,the composition of atherosclerotic plaques can be analyzedqualitatively as well as ***,we compare the feasibility of multimodal nonlinearimaging combining,two-photon fluorescence(TPF),coherent anti-Stokes Raman scatering(CARS)and second-hamonic generation(SHG)microscopy to contrast composition and mor-phology of lipid deposits against the surrounding matrix of connective tissue with diffractionlimited spatial *** this contribution,the spatial distribution of major constituents of the arterial wall and atherosclerotic plaques like elastin,collagen,triglycerides and cholesterol can be simultaneously visualized by a combination of nonlinear imaging methods,providing a powerful label-free complement to standard histopathological methods with great potential forin vivo application.

The steady progress in medical diagnosis and treatment of diseases largely hinges on the steady development and improvement of modern imaging *** spectroscopy has attracted increasing attention for clinical applications as it is label-free,non-invasive,and delivers molecular fingerprinting information of a *** combination with fiber optic probes,it also allows easy access to different body parts of a ***,image acquisition with fiber optic probes is currently not ***,we introduce a fiber optic probe-based Raman imaging system for the real-time molecular virtual reality data visualization of chemical boundaries on a computer screen and the physical *** approach is developed around a computer vision-based positional tracking system in conjunction with photometric stereo and augmented and mixed chemical reality,enabling molecular imaging and direct visualization of molecular boundaries of three-dimensional *** proposed approach achieves a spatial resolution of 0.5 mm in the transverse plane and a topology resolution of 0.6 mm,with a spectral sampling frequency of 10 Hz,and can be used to image large tissue areas in a few minutes,making it highly suitable for clinical tissueboundary demarcation.A variety of applications on biological samples,i.e.,distribution of pharmaceutical compounds,brain-tumor phantom,and various types of sarcoma have been characterized,showing that the system enables rapid and intuitive assessment of molecular boundaries.

Biophotonics is an emerging multidisciplinary research area, embracing all light-based technologies applied to the life sciences and medicine [1-6]. The expression itself is the combination of the Greek syllables ＂bios＂ standing for life and ＂phos＂ standing for light. Photonics is the technical term for all methodologies and technologies utilizing photons over the whole spectrum from X-ray over the ultraviolet, visible and the infrared to the terahertz region, and its interaction with any matter. Beyond this definition, biophotonics is a scientific discipline of remarkable societal importance. As a part of photonics, it has proved to be an important enabling technology for accelerated progress in medicine and biotechnology. It can do so, because it originated at the interface of the most innovative academic disciplines of the last century, i.e., photonics, biotechnology and nanotechnologies. This field of research brings together scientists from different professions, such as physicists, biologists, pharmacists, medical doctors, etc. To work on common projects, they need to understand the ideas and the techniques of their counterparts.

The increased population density, coupled with changes in dietary habits in developing countries towards high quality food and the increasing use of grains for livestock feed is projected to increase demand for food production by 70% by 2050. Crop yields would continue to grow but at a slower rate than in the past. Yield growth will play an important role as only a slow expansion of agricultural land is expected. Future yield increases on lands currently supporting high production levels must come from continued yield enhancing genetic modifications. The most important grain and feed is maize. Genetic improvement has not only contributed to yield increases but also to other desirable plant components such as resistance to lodging and tolerance to increased plant populations, insects, and diseases. Maize production has increased from 200 million tons in 1960 to over 800 million tons in 2011 but has not changed very much recently. The reviews suggest that the overall assessment of farm-level costs and benefits of GM maize has severe limitations. Nonetheless, GM maize is a potential tool to increase farmers’ income and thus might contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable social and rural economic development, especially in developing countries. The results support the contention that the adoption of GM maize leads on average to a higher economic performance, i.e., benefits, for farmers than conventional (non-GM) crops. An important finding of the analysis is that the kind and magnitude of benefits are heterogeneous across crops, traits, countries and regions. However, while the literature on the economic impact of GM crops has grown in recent years there is still a need for more comparative studies across space and time in order to pin down these impacts and allow for a better assessment of the contribution that this technology can make to sustainable development.

A growing world population coupled with changing diet is projected to increase demand for food production by 70% by 2050. Helping farmers lose less of their crops will be a key factor in promoting food security. In addition to pesticides GM crops will continue to be a vital tool in the diverse range of technologies that can maintain and improve living standards for the people of the world. The EU is dependent for 65% on imports of protein-rich feedstuffs for which there are no substitutes in the short term. The EU livestock sector uses imported soybean, soybean meal and maize by-products as animal feed. Without an adequate supply of these feed ingredients, the EU’s livestock production will loose competitiveness. However, demands from the EU differ to those from third countries with respect to the GM varieties grown, and what are authorised for import into the EU. The risk that supplies of soya products and maize by-products could be affected by the low-level presence of non-EU approved GM material has not been fully resolved as the EU has allowed just a 0.1% tolerance for this plus 0.05% tolerance for measuring uncertainty. This could cause supply problems for the animal feed industry, and ultimately supply of food to consumers. The importance of the EU market and EU requirements for the major soybean and maize exporter countries is declining over time and it is becoming increasingly difficult and costly to maintain a non-GM supply chain in the EU. Food companies and supermarkets will struggle to stay GM-free. EU member states dependent on imports will be forced to deal with more GM presence in their chain. Market forces are forcing governments to authorize products more efficiently, develop tolerance policies or tolerate unapproved varieties in their imports.

Multimodal non-linear microscopy combining coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering,second harmonic generation,and two-photon excited fluorescence has proved to be a versatile and powerful tool enabling the label-free investigation of tissue structure,molecular composition,and correlation with function and disease *** a routine medical application,the implementation of this approach into an in vivo imaging endoscope is ***,this is a difficult task due to the requirements of a multicolour ultrashort laser delivery from a compact and robust laser source through a fiber with low losses and temporal synchronization,the efficient signal collection in epi-direction,the need for small-diameter but highly corrected endomicroobjectives of high numerical aperture and compact ***,we introduce an ultra-compact fiber-scanning endoscope platform for multimodal non-linear endomicroscopy in combination with a compact four-wave mixing based fiber *** heart of this fiber-scanning endoscope is an in-house custom-designed,single mode,double clad,double core pure silica fiber in combination with a 2.4 mm diameter NIR-dual-waveband corrected endomicroscopic objective of 0.55 numerical aperture and 180µm field of view for non-linear imaging,allowing a background free,low-loss,high peak power laser delivery,and an efficient signal collection in backward direction.A linear diffractive optical grating overlays pump and Stokes laser foci across the full field of view,such that diffraction-limited performance is demonstrated for tissue imaging at one frame per second with sub-micron spatial resolution and at a high transmission of 65%from the laser to the specimen using a distal resonant fiber scanner.
