Biogenic production of dMSP and its degradation to dMS—their roles in the global sulfur cycle

dimethyl sulfide(dMS) is the most abundant form of volatile sulfur in Earth’s oceans, and is mainly produced by the enzymatic clevage of dimethylsulfoniopropionate(dMSP). dMS and dMSP play important roles in driving the global sulfur cycle and may affect climate. dMSP is proposed to serve as an osmolyte, a grazing deterrent, a signaling molecule, an antioxidant, a cryoprotectant and/or as a sink for excess sulfur. It was long believed that only marine eukaryotes such as phytoplankton produce dMSP. However, we recently discovered that marine heterotrophic bacteria can also produce dMSP, making them a potentially important source of dMSP. At present, one prokaryotic and two eukaryotic dMSP synthesis enzymes have been *** heterotrophic bacteria are likely the major degraders of dMSP, using two known pathways: demethylation and *** phytoplankton and some fungi can also cleave dMSP. So far seven different prokaryotic and one eukaryotic dMSP lyases have been identified. This review describes the global distribution pattern of dMSP and dMS, the known genes for biosynthesis and cleavage of dMSP, and the physiological and ecological functions of these important organosulfur molecules, which will improve understanding of the mechanisms of dMSP and dMS production and their roles in the environment.

Automated retrofit targeting of heat exchanger networks

The aim of this paper is to develop a novel heat exchanger network (HEN) retrofit method based on a new automated retrofit targeting (ART) algorithm. ART uses the heat surplus-deficit table (HSdT) in combination with the Bridge Retrofit concepts to generate retrofit bridges option, from which a retrofit design may be formulated. The HSdT is a tabular tool that shows potential for improved re-integration of heat source and sink streams within a HEN. Using the HSdT, retrofit bridges—a set of modifications that links a cooler to a heater to save energy—may be identified, quantified, and compared. The novel retrofit method including the ART algorithm has been successfully implemented in Microsoft ExcelTM to enable analysis of large-scale HENs. A refinery case study with 27 streams and 46 existing heat exchangers demonstrated the retrofit method’s potential. For the case study, the ART algorithm found 68903 feasible unique retrofit opportunities with a minimum 400 kW·unit−1 threshold for heat recovery divided by the number of new units. The most promising retrofit project required 3 new heat exchanger units to achieve a heat savings of 4.24 MW with a favorable annualised profit and a reasonable payback period.

Understanding how individuals manage costs during the migration period is challenging because individuals are difficult to follow between sites; the advent of hybrid Global Positioning Systemacceleration （ACC） tracking devices enables researchers to link spatial and temporal attributes of avian migration with behavior for the first time ever. We fitted these devices on male Greenland white-fronted geese Anser albifrons flavirostris wintering at 2 sites （Loch Ken, Scotland and Wexford, Ireland） to understand whether birds migrating further during spring fed more on winter- ing and staging areas in advance of migration episodes. Although Irish birds flew significantly further （ca. 300 kin） than Scottish birds during spring, their cumulative hours of migratory flight, flight speed during migration, and overall dynamic body ACC （i.e., a proxy for energy expenditure） were not significantly different. Further, Irish birds did not feed significantly more or expend significantly more energy in advance of migration episodes. These results suggest broad individual plasticity in this species, although Scottish birds arriving on breeding areas in Greenland with greater energy stores （because they migrated less） may be better prepared for food scarcity, which might increase their reproductive success.

BACKGROUNd The liver has traditionally been regarded as resistant to antibody-mediated rejection(AMR).AMR in liver transplants is a field in its infancy compared to kidney and lung *** our case we present a patient with alpha-1-antitrypsin disease who underwent ABO compatible liver transplant complicated by acute liver failure(ALF)with evidence of antibody mediated rejection on allograft biopsy and elevated serum donor-specific antibodies(dSA).This case highlights the need for further investigations and heightened awareness for timely *** SUMMARY A 56 year-old woman with alpha-1-antitrypsin disease underwent ABO compatible liver transplant from a deceased *** recipient MELd at the time of transplant was *** flow cytometric crossmatches were noted to be positive for T and B *** patient had an uneventful recovery *** on postoperative day 5 the patient developed fevers,elevated liver function tests,distributive shock,renal failure,and hepatic *** went into ALF with evidence of antibody mediated rejection with portal inflammation,bile duct injury,endothelitis,and extensive centrizonal necrosis,and C4d staining on allograft biopsy and elevated *** various interventions including plasmapheresis and immunomodulating therapy,she continued to *** was relisted and successfully underwent liver *** This very rare case highlights AMR as the cause of ALF following liver transplant requiring retransplantation.

Optimizing methyl-eugenol aromatherapy to maximize posttreatment effects to enhance mating competitiveness of male Bactrocera carambolae （diptera： Tephritidae）

Methyl-eugenol （ME）（1,2-dimethoxy-4-（2-propenyl）benzene）, a natural phy- tochemical, did enhance male Bactrocera carambolae drew ＆ Hancock （diptera： Tephri- tidae） mating competitiveness 3 d after ingestion. Enhanced male mating competitiveness can significantly increase the effectiveness of the sterile insect technique （SIT）. ME appli- cation to mass reared sterile flies by feeding is infeasible. ME application by aromatherapy however, would be a very practical way of ME application in fly emergence and release facilities. This approach was shown to enhance mating competitiveness ofB. carambolae 3 d posttreatment （dPT）. despite this added benefit, every additional day of delaying re- lease will reduce sterile fly quality and will add cost to SIT application. The present study was planned to assess the effects of ME-aromatherapy on male B. carambolae mating competitiveness 1dPT and 2dPT. ME aromatherapy 1dPT or 2dPT did enhance mating competitiveness of B. carambolae males whereas ME feeding 1dPT and 2dPT did not. Male mating competitiveness was enhanced by the ME aromatherapy irrespective if they received 1dPT, 2dPT or 3dPT. ME aromatherapy, being a viable approach for its applica- tion, did enhance mating competitiveness of male B. carambolae 1 d posttreatrnent as ME feeding did 3 d after ingestion.

Pre- and Post-Construction Assessment of Nutrient Concentrations at Shallow Water Habitat Restoration Sites on the Lower Missouri River

Loss of shallow water habitat (SWH) is hypothesized as a factor contributing to the decline of native Missouri River fishes, including the endangered pallid sturgeon. As a result, the restoration of SWH is a high priority in this large river system. Restoration activities often include constructing side channel chutes;however, limited information exists on the potential negative, unintended effects of chute construction activities on water quality. This study was designed to better understand the possible effects of chute construction, both initially and as chute development continues, on Missouri River nutrient concentrations. Our first objective was to determine if the addition of sediment from proposed chute locations to river water samples (i.e., elutriate samples) increased nutrient concentrations relative to water-only river samples collected just upstream of the proposed chute locations or river water samples collected from eight long-term water quality monitoring stations. Our second objective was to determine if nutrient concentrations of river samples monitored during 2009 and 2010 increased after water passed through previously-constructed chutes. Nutrient concentrations of elutriate samples were not significantly higher than river water samples collected just upstream of the proposed chute locations;the same was true for Missouri River water samples collected from seven of eight long-term water quality monitoring stations. Furthermore, monitoring of nutrient concentrations collected from water samples at the outlet of previously-constructed chutes were not significantly higher than water samples collected at the upstream inlet of these chutes. Our results suggest that individual SWH chute construction projects designed to restore some of the natural form and function of the Missouri River are unlikely to significantly increase Missouri Rivernutrient concentrations initially or as these chutes continue to develop.
