Establishing a standard method for analysing case detection delay in leprosy using a Bayesian modelling approach

Transcriptome profiling reveals phase-specific gene expression in the developing barley inflorescence

The shape of an inflorescence varies among cereals,ranging from a highly branched panicle in rice to a much more compact spike in barley(Hordeum vulgare L.)and wheat(Triticum aestivum L.).However,little is known about the molecular basis of cereal inflorescence *** profiled transcriptomes at three developmental stages of the barley main shoot apex—spikelet initiation,floral organ differentiation,and floral organ growth—and compared them with those from vegetative seedling *** analyses identified 3688 genes differentially transcribed between the three meristem stages,with a further 1394 genes preferentially expressed in reproductive compared with vegetative *** assembly and Gene Ontology analysis classified these 4888 genes into 28 clusters,revealing distinct patterns for genes such as transcription factors,histone modification,and cell-cycle progression specific for each stage of inflorescence *** also compared expression patterns of VRS(SIX-ROWED SPIKE)genes and auxin-,gibberellic acid-and cytokinin-associated genes between two-rowed and six-rowed barley to describe regulators of lateral spikelet *** findings reveal barley inflorescence phase-specific gene expression,identify new candidate genes that regulate barley meristem activities and flower development,and provide a new genetic resource for further dissection of the molecular mechanisms of spike development.

Effect of financial support on reducing the incidence of catastrophic costs among tuberculosis-affected households in Indonesia:eight simulated scenarios

Background:The World Health Organization's End Tuberculosis Strategy states that no tuberculosis(TB)-affected households should endure catastrophic costs due to *** achieve this target,it is essential to provide adequate social *** only a few studies in many countries have evaluated social-protection programs to determine whether the target is being reached,we assessed the effect of financial support on reducing the incidence of catastrophic costs due to TB in ***:From july to Septem ber 2016,we interviewed adult patients receiving treatment for TB in 19 primary health centres in urban,sub-urban and rural area of Indonesia,and those receiving multidrug-resistant(MDR)TB treatment in an Indonesian national referral *** on the needs assessment,we developed eight scenarios for financial *** assessed the effect of each simulated scenario by measuring reductions in the incidence of catastrophic ***:We analysed data of 282 TB and 64 MDR-TB *** incidences of catastrophic costs in affected households were 36 and 83%,***'primary needs for social protection were financial support to cover costs related to income loss,transportation,and food *** optimum scenario,in which financial support would be provided for these three items,would reduce the respective incidences of catastrophic costs in TB and MDR-TB-affected households to 11 and 23%.The patients experiencing catastrophic costs in this scenario would,however,have to pay high rem aining costs(median of USD 910;[interquartile range(IQR)662]in the TB group,and USD 2613;[IQR 3442]in the MDR-TB group).Conclusions:Indonesia's current level of social protection is not sufficient to mitigate the socioeconom ic im pact of *** support for income loss,transportation costs,and food-supplem ent costs will substantially reduce the incidence of catastrophic costs,but financial support alone will not be sufficient to achieve the target of

Vitamin A deficiency remains a severe global health issue,which creates a need to biofortify crops with provitamin A carotenoids(PACs).Expanding plant cell capacity for synthesis and storing of PACs outside the plastids is a promising biofortification strategy that has been little ***,we engineered PAC formation and sequestration in the cytosol of nicotiana benthamiana leaves,Arabidopsis seeds,and citrus callus cells,using a fungal(neurospora crassa)carotenoid pathway that consists of only three enzymes converting C5 isopentenyl building blocks formed from mevalonic acid into PACs,including β-*** strategy led to the accumulation of significant amounts of phytoene and γ-and β-carotene,in addition to fungal,health-promoting carotenes with 13 conjugated double bonds,such as the PAC torulene,in the *** the isopentenyl diphosphate pool by adding a truncated Arabidopsis hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase substantially increased cytosolic carotene *** carotenes accumulate in cytosolic lipid droplets(CLDs),which represent a novel sequestering sink for storing these pigments in plant ***,β-carotene accumulated in the cytosol of citrus callus cells was more light stable compared to compared with plastidialβ-***,engineering cytosolic carotene formation increased the number of large-sized CLDs and the levels of β-apocarotenoids,including retinal,the aldehyde corresponding to vitamin ***,our study opens up the possibility of exploiting the high-flux mevalonic acid pathway for PAC biosynthesis and enhancing carotenoid sink capacity in green and non-green plant tissues,especially in lipid-storing seeds,and thus paves the way for further optimization of carotenoid biofortification in crops.

目的探索女性性工作者艾滋病相关干预措施利用及影响因素。方法采用方便抽样,调查深圳市1 656名女性性工作者艾滋病相关干预服务利用情况。对不进行艾滋病检测、不使用安全套以及不参与同伴教育的影响因素进行分析。同时评价未参加艾滋病检测、安全套使用与艾滋病相关知识水平之间的关系。结果女性性工作者的艾滋病检测率、安全套使用率和接受同伴教育率分别为21.5%、47.8%和28.0%。低年龄组和工作年限短与不利用3项干预服务有关。持续使用安全套和较高的艾滋病相关知识水平可提高艾滋病相关干预服务的利用率。结论深圳市女性性工作者艾滋病相关干预服务的利用率较低。鉴于安全套使用与艾滋病相关知识水平与干预措施的利用相关,应针对年轻和刚从事性服务工作者,提高其安全套使用率和艾滋病相关知识水平。

Over 2 billion people worldwide are estimated to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(nAFLD),defined by excess hepatic ***,progression into nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(nASH)is characterized by the onset of liver inflammation following exacerbated steatosis.1 This suggests that reducing liver inflammation(*** lifestyle interventions involving exercise training)may come secondary to a reduction of ***,both the metabolic and inflammatory processes involved in nAFLD are under circadian control and could respond differently to exercise at different times of day.2 To investigate the time-of-day–dependent effect of exercise training on nAFLD amelioration in the early disease stages we trained high-fat high-cholesterol(HFHC)-fed APOE*3-Leiden cholesteryl ester transfer protein(CETP)mice during their early or late active *** mouse model was chosen because of its humanized lipid metabolism and its ability to develop all hallmarks of human nAFLD upon HFHC feeding.

Introduction Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)is highly effective and potentially life-saving for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection(CDI)[1].Recent pilot trials also reported the use of FMT to revert hepatic encephalopathy(HE)in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis without infectious colitis[2,3].Intestinal microbiota-driven hyperammonemia is central to HE development and most treatments aim to reduce ammonia levels by modulating the intestinal ***,FMT might lead to increased intestinal ammonia production,as we describe here.
