Mg-6Zn-1Y(at.%)ribbons with strengthening precipitates of multi-type nanoquasicrystals were prepared by melt-spinning followed by aging *** evolution of the rapidly solidified ribbons during isothermal aging was comprehensively studied using various electron microscopy *** new kinds of decagonal quasicrystals were formed in aged ribbons,in addition to precipitation of nanometer icosahedral ***-resolution observations reveal that both decagonal quasicrystals can be modeled by quasiperiodic tiling with decagonal clusters of 2.5 nm in diameter,but overlap of neighboring clusters in both decagonal quasicrystals is different from the Gummelt model observed in other quasicrystals.A shell composed of complex laves Mg-Zn domains was formed surrounding each decagonal quasicrystal precipitate upon prolonged *** addition,all kinds of nanoprecipitates exhibit excellent structure and size stability at 573 *** findings may have implications for not only fundamental studies about quasicrystals,but also microstructural manipulation of high-performance Mg alloys.

Polyamines, putrescine, spermidine and spermine are low molecular weight polycations implicated in flowering and seed set and plants’ responses under adverse environmental conditions. Research in other crops has shown that polyamine metabolism is greatly affected by water-deficit stress, however, no information exists on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum l.). A field study was conducted in 2011 in two contrasting locations (Fayetteville, AR, and lubbock, TX) in order to investigate the effect of water-deficit stress during flowering on polyamine metabolism of the cotton flower and its subtending leaf. Treatments consisted of control (well watered) and water-stress (irrigation withheld for two weeks at the onset of flowering) in a split plot design. First day white flowers and their subtending leaves were collected at the end of each week of the stress period for determination of polyamine concentrations. Water-deficit stress resulted in significant increases in PUT and SPD levels of pistils and leaves compared to the control. However, pistil and leaf SPM content significantly increased under drought conditions in one location and remained unaltered in the other one. leaf and pistil polyamine metabolism of cotton appeared to be greatly affected by limited water supply, however further research is needed to elucidate the ways polyamines can be used to increase cotton drought tolerance.

Clear lens extraction in angle-closure glaucoma patients

AIM: To describe the results of 5 consecutive cases of clear lens extraction in angle closure patients for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). ·METHODS: Retrospective observational case series. All angle closure patients were on two or more topical glaucoma medications and had prior laser iridotomy. Eyes underwent clear lens extraction by phacoemu - lsification with intraocular lens implantation. ·RESUlTS: All five patients in this case series carried the diagnosis of angle -closure glaucoma and had uncontrolled IOP prior to surgery despite topical medications. After clear lens extraction three of the cases had good IOP control (IOP <22mmHg) without the need for topical medications. In one case the IOP was better controlled after surgery, however, topical medications were required. The desired IOP was not met in one case despite restarting maximum topical therapy. ·CONClUSION: This case series suggests that there may be a role for therapeutic clear lens extraction in select cases of angle-closure glaucoma.

The rational design of rock slope support is particularly important if the slope is steep, if safety is important,and if the design significantly affects project ***,slopes with stability factors smaller than 1.0 should be reinforced for maximum safety and *** optimize reinforcement design of a rock slope,an engineer should distinguish those locations needing critical,general,or even no reinforcement from other parts of the *** purpose of this paper is to present the concept of the degree of reinforcement demand(DRD) for rock slope projects and the quantitative procedures for the DRD *** main influencing factors can be determined,classified and assigned based on knowledge from theoretical analyses, practical experiences and *** show variances in the DRD values with time and space, a rock slope to be assessed should be divided into a number of slope zones and the construction schedule into different *** geological conditions,mechanical properties of the rock mass,displacement measurements and/or construction have changed in a slope zone,the DRD value in this slope zone will increase or *** for convenience in the DRD assessments, such changes in the main factors and measurements are analyzed via *** example,the influencing factor matrix and the displacement ratio matrix,i.e.[A] and[E],are,respectively, used to indicate possible modifications in the main factors and displacement measurements for all slope zones in the k-th *** DRD matrix,[R],can be obtained by multiplying[A] and[E], and those elements along the leading diagonal of the matrix[R] are the DRD values corresponding to different slope zones in the k-th *** demonstrate the feasibility of the DRD assessment,an application relating to the shiplock slope(including the lower-stream slope) of the Wuqiangxi hydropower station in China is described in this paper.
