Background:This study is a component of a large research project on five major neglected zoonotic diseases(NZDs)including cystic echinococcosis and was undertaken in the Province of Sidi Kacem over a period of four years(April 2009-March 2013).Methods:Questionnaires were administered at community level in a total of 27 communes and visits were made to all of the 10 abattoirs situated in the Province,to collect qualitative data on determinants of transmission for disease in humans and *** specifically,community knowledge,attitudes and practices related to cystic echinococcosis were assessed,as well as the extent to which local customs and behaviours may promote *** infrastructure and practices,and their role in perpetuating disease transmission were also critically ***:The results show that only 50%of people have heard of the disease,and of those,only 21%are aware of the dog’s role in disease ***-seven per cent of respondents stated that dogs are fed ruminant organs deemed unfit for human *** dogs have access to the family home,including the kitchen,in 39%of *** extent of this close proximity between humans and animals is even more pertinent when one considers that dogs are omnipresent in the community,with an average of 1.8 dogs owned per *** unrestricted access of dogs to abattoirs is a huge issue,which further promotes disease ***:This study would suggest that the high prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in humans and animals in Morocco is largely due to three factors:1)abundance of dogs 2)engagement in risky behaviour of the local population and 3)poor abattoir infrastructure and *** has serious implications in terms of the socio-economic impact of the disease,especially for rural poor communities.

Effects of geomorphology and soil conditions on vegetation structure in conserved desert wadis: A case study of jal AlZor escarpment, Kuwait

Variations in phytogeography of jal Al-Zor wadi system in Sabah Al Ahmad Nature Reserve, an arid national park in Kuwait, in relation to physiographic and edaphic conditions were investigated using alpha diversity and multivariate analyses. A total of 66 plant species were recorded at low-relief and high-relief wadis. Altitude and slope gradients, grain size distribution and soil texture properties had a significant relationship with plant cover and plant diversity. There was a high diversity of life-forms along the wadi system with a dominant of therophytes(annuals) particularly in spring after winter rainfalls. Chamaephytes and hemicryptophytes were the dominant perennial life-forms. A chorological analysis documents the strong effect of Saharo-Arabian chorotype on the vegetation of the study area. Cluster analysis clarified eight vegetation assemblages along altitude and slope gradients within the wadi system. Alpha diversity of plant species was greater in plant assemblages at low-relief wadis than at high-relief wadis. Vegetation structure in this study showed that phytogeographically, wadis of jal Al-Zor were closely related to the wadis in the Arabian deserts. The slope gradient pattern and edaphic conditions of plant assemblages and plant diversity in the conserved wadis of jal Al-Zor may be suggested as a reference model for restoration strategy of disturbed low elevated wadis in the surrounding desert *** would include propagation of suitable plants such as Stipagrostis plumosa-Haloxylon salicornicum-Rhanterium epapposum.

here has been a strong need for simulation environments that are capable of modeling deep interdependencies between complex systems encountered during natural hazards,such as the interactions and coupled effects between civil infrastructure systems response,human behavior,and social policies,for improved community *** such complex components with an integrated simulation requires continuous data exchange between different simulators simulating separate models during the entire simulation *** can be implemented by means of distributed simulation platforms or data passing *** order to provide a systematic reference for simulation tool choice and facilitating the development of compatible distributed simulators for deep interdependent study in the context of natural hazards,this article focuses on generic tools suitable for integration of simulators from different fields but not the platforms that are mainly used in some specific *** this aim,the article provides a comprehensive review of the most commonly used generic distributed simulation platforms(Distributed Interactive Simulation(DIS),High Level Architecture(HLA),Test and Training Enabling Architecture(TENA),and Distributed Data Services(DDS))and data passing tools(Robot Operation System(ROS)and Lightweight Communication and Marshalling(LCM))and compares their advantages and *** specific limitations in existing platforms are identified from the perspective of natural hazard *** mitigating the identified limitations,two platform design recommendations are provided,namely message exchange wrappers and hybrid communication,to help improve data passing capabilities in existing solutions and provide some guidance for the design of a new domain-specific distributed simulation framework.

We reconsider the study of critical behaviors of Kerr—Newman Anti-de Sitter(AdS)black holes in four *** study is made in terms of the moduli space parameterized by the charge Q and the rotation parameter a,relating the mass M of the black hole and its angular momentum j via the relation a=j/***,we discuss such thermodynamical behaviors in the presence of a positive cosmological constant considered as a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic *** equation of state for a charged Reissner—Nordstrom AdS black hole predicts a critical universal number depending on the(Q,a)moduli *** the vanishing limit of the a parameter,this prediction recovers the usual universal number in four ***,we find the bounded region of the moduli space allowing the consistency of the model with real thermodynamical variables.

A Hybrid Geostatistical Method for Estimating Citywide Traffic Volumes - A Case Study of Edmonton, Canada

Traffic volume information has long played an important role in many transportation related works,such as traffic operations,roadway design,air quality control,and policy ***,monitoring traffic volumes over a large spatial area is not an easy task due to the significant amount of time and manpower required to collect such large-scale *** this study,a hybrid geostatistical approach,named Network Regression Kriging,has been developed to estimate urban traffic volumes by incorporating auxiliary variables such as road type,speed limit,and network *** standard kriging is based on Euclidean distances,this study implements road network distances to improve traffic volumes estimations.A case study using 10-year of traffic volume data collected within the city of Edmonton was conducted to demonstrate the robustness of the model developed *** suggest that the proposed hybrid model significantly outperforms the standard kriging method in terms of accuracy by 4.0%overall,especially for a large-scale *** was also found that the necessary stationarity assumption for kriging did not hold true for a large network whereby separate estimations for each road type performed significantly better than a general estimation for the overall network by 4.12%.

A new structure for isolator is proposed in this work. The proposed structure consists of metamaterial-magnetoplasma semiconductors parallel plate structure. The utility of magnetoplasma semiconductors is promising in developing nonreciprocal components in the submillimeter-wave and millimeter-wave bands for satellite communications. Metamaterials (MTMs) is used to enhance the behavior of the isolator.

High-aspect 3D two-photon polymerization structuring with widened objective working range (WOW-2PP)

We developed a novel two-photon polymerization(2PP)configuration for fabrication of high-aspect three-dimensional(3D)structures,with an overall height larger than working distance of the microscope objective used for laser beam focusing into a photosensitive *** method is based on a modified optical 2PP setup,where a microscope objective(1003 high N.A.),immersion oil and cover glass can be moved together into the photosensitive material,resulting in an effective higher and wider objective working range(WOW-2PP).The proposed technique enables the fabrication of high-aspect structures with sub-micrometer process resolution.3D structures with a height of 7 mm are demonstrated,which could hardly be built with the conventional 2PP set-up due to refractive index mismatch and laser beam disturbances.

Influence of Magnetic Field Inhomogeneity on a Magneto-Optical Current Sensor

The growth in the capacity of electric power system creates a demand for the protection of relaying systems. Optical current transducers—OCT that are mainly made up of single mode optical fibers which are subjected to Faraday rotation are used as a replacement for electromagnetic transducers due to their immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, the principal parameter in this system, the sensitivity to magnetic fields or current, depends on the Verdet constant, which is low in the case of optical fibers. However, the optical path length can be increased to compensate for it by winding the fiber around a current carrying element a large number of turns. In this work, we study a current sensor, which is made up of a conductor coil with a fiber inside, thus increasing sensitivity. We study the effect of the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field induced by the current on the sensitivity of the optical fiber sensor.

Combined conventional/antioxidant“Astaxanthin”treatment for male infertility:a double blind,randomized trial

Aim： To evaluate the treatment of male infertility with a strong natural antioxidant, in addition to conventional treatment. Methods： Using a double blind, randomized trial design, 30 men with infertility of ≥12 months and female partners with no demonstrable cause of infertility received conventional treatment according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization （WHO）, and either a strong antioxidant Astaxanthin 16 rag/day （AstaCarox, AstaReal AB, Gustavsberg, Sweden） or placebo for 3 months. The effects of treatment on semen parameters, reactive oxygen species （ROS）, zona-free hamster oocyte test, serum hormones including testosterone, luteinizing hormone （LH）, follicle stimulating hormone （FSH） and Inhibin B, and spontaneous or intrauterine insemination （IUI）-induced pregnancies were evaluated. Results： ROS and Inhibin B decreased significantly and sperm linear velocity increased in the Astaxanthin group （n = 11）, but not in the placebo group （n = 19）. The results of the zona-free hamster oocyte test tended to improve in the Astaxanthin group in contrast with the placebo group, though not reaching statistical significance. The total and per cycle pregnancy rates among the placebo cases （10.5 % and 3.6 %） were lower compared with 54.5 % and 23. 1% respectively in the Astaxanthin group （P=0.028; P=0.036）. Conclusion： Although the present study suggests a positive effect of Astaxanthin on sperm parameters and fertility, the results need to be confirmed in a larger trial before recommending Astaxanthin for the complementary treatment of infertile men. （Asian j Androl 2005 Sep; 7： 257-262）
