Superior growth performance in broiler chicks fed chelated compared to inorganic zinc in presence of elevated dietary copper

background： The goal of this study was to compare the antagonism of elevated dietary Cu （250 mg/kg） from CuS04 on three different Zn sources （ZnS04. H20; [Zn bis（-2-hydroxy-4-（methylthio）butanoic acid）], Zn（HMTba）2 a chelated Zn methionine hydroxy analogue; and Zn-Methionine）, as measured using multiple indices of animal performance in ROSS 308 broilers. Methods： Three experiments were conducted in broiler chicks fed a semi-purified diet. All birds were fed a Zn-deficient diet （8.5 mg/kg diet） for 1 wk, and then provided with the experimental diets for 2 wks. Results： Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial design with two levels of Cu （8 vs. 250 mg/kg diet from CuSO4） and two Zn sources at 30 mg/kg [ZnSO4. H20 vs. Zn（HMTba）2]. Elevated Cu impaired growth performance only in birds fed ZnSO4. Compared to ZnSO4. H20, Zn（HMTba）2 improved feed intake （12 %; P 〈 0.001） and weight gain （12 %, P 〈 0.001） and the benefits were more pronounced in the presence of 250 mg/kg diet Cu. Experiment 2 was a dose titration of ZnSO4- H20 and Zn（HMTba）2 at 30, 4,5, 60, and 75 mg/kg diet in the presence of 250 mg/kg CuSO4. Feed：gain was decreased and tibia Zn was increased with increasing Zn levels from 30 to 75 mg/kg. birds fed Zn（HMTba）2 consumed more food and gained more weight compared to birds fed ZnSO4, especially at lower supplementation levels （30 and 45 mg/kg; interaction P 〈 0,05）. Experiment 3 compared two organic Zn sources （Zn（HMTba）2 vs. Zn-Methionine） at 30 mg/kg with or without 250 mg/kg CuSO4. No interactions were observed between Zn sources and Cu levels on performance or tissue mineral concentrations. High dietary Cu decreased weight gain （P 〈 0.01）. Tibia Cu and liver Cu were significantly increased with 250 mg/kg dietary Cu supplementation （P 〈 0.01）. No difference was observed between the two Zn sources. Conclusions： Dietary 250 mg/kg Cu significantly impaired feed intake and weight gain in birds fed ZnSO4. H20, but had less impact in birds fed Zn（HMTba）2. No difference

Methoprene application and diet protein supplementation to male melon fly, bactrocera cucurbitae, modifies female remating behavior

Methoprene （an analogue of j.venile hormone） application and feeding on a protein diet is known to enhance male melon fly, bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett （Diptera： Tephritidae）, mating success. In this study, we investigated the effect of these treatments on male b. cucurbitae＇s ability to inhibit female remating. While 14-d-old females were fed on protein diet, 6-d-old males were exposed to one of the following treatments：（i） topical application of methoprene and fed on a protein diet; （ii） no methoprene but fed on a protein diet; （iii） methoprene and sugar-fed only; and （iv） sugar-fed, 14-d-old males acted as controls. Treatments had no effect on a male＇s ability to depress the female remating receptivity in comparison to the control. Females mated with protein-deprived males showed higher remating receptivity than females first mated with protein-fed males. Methoprene and protein diet interaction had a positive effect on male mating success during the first and second mating of females. Significantly more females first mated with sugar-fed males remated with protein-fed males and females first mated with methoprene treated and protein-fed males were more likely to remate with similarly treated males. Females mating latency （time to start mating） was significantly shorter with protein-fed males, and mating duration was significantly longer with protein-fed males compared with protein-deprived males. These results are discussed in the context of methoprene and/or dietary protein as prerelease treatment of sterile males in area-wide control of melon fly integrating the sterile insect technique （SIT）.

Deposition of Nano-Scaled Coatings Using Inductively Coupled Plasma

Nano-scaled Ti-b-N coatings could be produced by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted magnetron spurtering. The properties and microstructure of the coating can be changed drastically by applying ICP to conventional magnetron sputtering. In this work, an internal type rf ICP process is used. The core of this technology is the efficient production and control of self-depositing ions and reactive gas ions by an induced electric field. Ti-b-N coatings were prepared by using a Tib2 target and a gas mixture of N2 and Ar at 200 ℃ and a pressure of 60 mTorr. In addition to ICP, the effect of the substrate bias voltage on the structure and properties of the coating was investigated. by applying ICP and a bias voltage to the substrate the hardness of the Ti-b-N coating is increased by more than 75 GPa, as a result of enhanced ionization in the plasma. The Ti-b-N coating, which has the highest hardness, shows the best surface uniformity and a very dense structure with a grain size of 3 nm. This sample also shows a high crystallinity compared to the coating prepared using other deposition parameters.

Nanocomposite starch films: Cytotoxicity studies and their application as cheese packaging

This work focuses on the development of starch-based nanocomposite films containing AgNPs obtained by different green synthesis techniques, the characterization of their relevant properties, the study of their cytotoxicity and their application as food packaging on cheese. AgNPs were obtained by different green synthesis techniques: AgNP in situ and AgNP L. The incorporation of AgNP L improved the barrier properties of nanocomposite films, since water vapor permeability decreased (0.63 +/- 0.07 x 10-10 g/m s Pa) compared to films containing AgNPs in situ (1.9 +/- 0.1 x 10-10 g/m s Pa), while the UV-vis barrier capacity was higher (371.5 +/- 15.6 and 314.1 +/- 14.7, respectively). Films with AgNPs synthesized in situ were less cytotoxic for the Caco-2/TC7 line (90% viability) in comparison with films containing AgNPs synthesized with lemon j.ice (AgNP L). Vero cells were susceptible to adhesion problems on both control and nanocomposite films. Likewise, the differences observed between monocytes and macrophage THP-1 cells may be associated with the expression of different markers. Then, active packages were developed by thermo-sealing the films. The nanocomposite samples were able to extend the shelf life of cheese by 7 days, but the CL and AgNP L films were more effective, probably due to the synergistic effect of the active compounds present in the lemon j.ice and the low pH of the film-forming suspension. Finally, production costs and the current legislative framework for this type of material were revised.

Reactive Extraction of Alcohols from Apolar Hydrocarbons with Aqueous Solutions

The aqueous solutions are evaluated as sustainable reactive extraction solvents for the recovery of monohydroxyl alcohols （benzyl alcohol, 1-hexanol, cyclohexanol） present in few-percent concentrations in apolar hydrocarbons （toluene, n-hexane, and cyclohexane） by considering two approaches. An aqueous solution containing a reactive extractant, like borate salts, borate complexes, a monosalt of dicarboxylic acid, hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrins, and silver nitrate, shows limited potential to be used. Another approach, in which the alcohol is chemically modified prior to the extraction into an easy-extractable form, in this case a monoester/carboxylic acid, shows much more potential. An environmentally benign aqueous solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate can provide a distribution ratio of benzyl alcohol up to 200, leaving the solubility of the organic solvent in the aqueous solution unchanged relative to pure water and therefore increasing the selectivity with two orders of magnitude. The modification of aromatic, cyclo-aliphatic, and linear aliphatic alcohols can be performed efficiently in the apolar organic solvent without need for a catalyst. The recovery of the modified alcohol can be performed by back-extraction in combination with a spontaneous hydrolysis.
