Possibilities for arthroscopic treatment of the ageing sternoclavicular joint

AIM To investigate if there are typical degenerative changes in the ageing sternoclavicular joint(SCj), potentially accessible for arthroscopic *** Both SCjs were obtained from 39 human cadavers(mean age: 79 years, range: 59-96, 13 F/26 M). Each frozen specimen was divided frontally with a band saw, so that both SCjs were opened in the same section through the center of the discs. After thawing of the specimens, the condition of the discs was evaluated by probing and visual inspection. The articular cartilages were graded according to Outerbridge, and disc attachments were probed. Cranio-caudal heights of the joint cartilages were measured. Superior motion of the clavicle with inferior movement of the lateral clavicle was *** Degenerative changes of the discs were common. Only 22 discs(28%) were fully attached and the discs were thickest superiorly. We found a typical pattern: Detachment of the disc inferiorly in connection with thinning, fraying and fragmentation of the inferior part of the disc, and detachment from the anterior and/or posterior capsule. Severe joint cartilage degeneration ≥ grade 3 was more common on the clavicular side(73%) than on the sternal side(54%) of the joint. In cadavers< 70 years 75% had ≤ grade 2 changes while this was the case for only 19% aged 90 years or more. There was no difference in cartilage changes when right and left sides were compared, and no difference between sexes. Only one cadaver-a woman aged 60 years-had normal cartilages. CONCLUSION Changes in the disc and cartilages can be treated by resection of disc, cartilage, intraarticular osteophytes or medial clavicle end. Reattachment of a degenerated disc is not possible.

Caffeine Increases Verticaljumping Height in Young Trained Males Before But Not After a Maximal Effort Strength Training Session

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on vertical jumping height in rested condition and after a heavy strength training *** well-trained young males with experience in jump and strength training were included in this double-blinded,randomised study with cross-over ***(3 mg/kg body weight)or placebo were ingested 45 min prior to the jump *** was performed on a force platform and vertical jumping height was *** a standardized warm up,participants performed jumping series consisting of three maximal jumps with 30 s rest between jumps followed by five maximal jumps with 7 s rest between *** participants performed a heavy strength training of the leg muscles(leg press:3×15 reps)and the jumping series was repeated immediately after(30 s),and after 5 min and 15 min *** increased the maximal vertical counter movement jump height(P≤0.05)and mean value of the 5-jump sequence prior to the strength *** increased jump height by 2.2 cm±0.5 cm at the first *** lactate after the strength training increased to 6.97±1.20 and 7.77±0.54 mmol/L in PLA and CAF,respectively(P=0.19).The jump height was reduced by 8 cm after the strength *** were no differences in jump height after ingestion of caffeine or placebo immediately after the strength training session or in the recovery period,but blood lactate in the recovery period was higher in CAF compared to PLA(ANOVA;Pjump height in the resting ***,after a maximal effort strength training session the positive effect of caffeine was no longer significant.

The effects of cool materials,façade orientation,and morphological parameters on energy consumption at the residential neighborhood scale

Building surface cool materials are novel materials that can reduce urban heat island intensity and decrease building energy *** study investigated the impact of radiative properties of materials,façade orientation,and morphological parameters on energy consumption in six typical residential neighborhoods in Nanjing,*** neighborhood energy consumption of 16 application schemes considering the façade orientation factor is compared to determine the best energy-saving *** and annual energy-saving rates,savings in electricity costs,and the price ceiling for materials per unit area are *** results show that for low-rise buildings,using cool materials only on the roof can reduce the annual energy consumption by 1%.When cool or super cool materials are also used on the building façade,the annual energy saving rate can be up to 3.4%and 4.3%,*** cool materials on the south façade of buildings is not recommended due to significant heat loss in *** savings in electricity costs and the price ceiling for materials per unit area,the price of cool and super cool materials should be less than 3.0 and 3.7 RMB/m2,respectively,assuming a lifespan of eight years in Nanjing.

Background In beef cattle, more than 50% of the energy input to produce a unit of beef is consumed by the female that produced the calf. Development of genomic tools to identify females with high genetic merit for reproductive function could increase the profitability and sustainability of beef *** Genome-wide association studies(GWAS) were performed using a single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction approach on pregnancy outcome traits from a population of Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers. Furthermore, a validation GWAS was performed using data from another farm. Heifers were genotyped with the Bovine GGP F250 array that contains 221,077 SNPs. In the discovery population, heifers were bred in winter breeding seasons involving a single round of timed artificial insemination(AI) followed by natural mating for 3 months. Two phenotypes were analyzed: pregnancy outcome to first-service AI(PAI;n = 1,481) and pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season(PEBS;n = 1,725). The heritability was estimated as 0.149 and 0.122 for PAI and PEBS, respectively. In the PAI model, one quantitative trait locus(QTL), located between 52.3 and 52.5 Mb on BTA7, explained about 3% of the genetic variation, in a region containing a cluster of γ-protocadherin genes and SLC25A2. Other QTLs explaining between 0.5% and 1% of the genetic variation were found on BTA12 and 25. In the PEBS model, a large QTL on BTA7 was synonymous with the QTL for PAI, with minor QTLs located on BTA5, 9, 10, 11, 19, and 20. The validation population for pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season were Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers bred by natural mating.
