Candida auris since it discovery in 2009 is becoming a severe threat to human health due to its very quickly spread, its worldwide high resistance to systemic antifungal drugs. In resource-constrained settings where several conditions are met for its emergence and spread, this worrisome fungus could cause large hospital and/or community-based outbreaks. This review aimed to summarize the available data on C. auris in Africa focusing on its epidemiology and antifungal resistance profile. Major databases were searched for articles on the epidemiology and antifungal resistance profile of C. auris in Africa. Out of 2,521 articles identified 22 met the inclusion criteria. In Africa, nearly 89% of African countries have no published data on C. auris. The prevalence of C. auris in Africa was 8.74%. The case fatality rate of C. auris infection in Africa was 39.46%. The main C. auris risk factors reported in Africa were cardiovascular disease, renal failure, diabetes, HIV, recent intake of antimicrobial drugs, ICU admissions, surgery, hemodialysis, parenteral nutrition and indwelling devices. Four phylogenetic clades were reported in Africa, namely clades I, II, III and IV. Candida auris showed a pan-African very high resistance rate to fluconazole, moderate resistance to amphotericin B, and high susceptibility to echinocandins. Finally, C. auris clade-specific mutations were observed within the ERG2, ERG3, ERG9, ERG11, FKS1, taC1b and MRR1 genes in Africa. This systematic review showed the presence of C. auris in the African continent and a worrying unavailability of data on this resilient fungus in most African countries.

Context and Objective: Cervicofacial cellulitis is a lethal infection without treatment. The aim of this study is to establish the bacteriological and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of cervico-facial cellulitis at the Regional Teaching Hospital (RTH) of Ouahigouya, in order to guide practitioners in the development of effective probabilistic antibiotic therapy protocols. Subjects and Methods: This was a transversal descriptive study with prospective data collection from July 1 to December 31, 2021 at the RTH of Ouahigouya. All cases of suppurative cervicofacial cellulitis that had been the subject of pyoculture were retained. Results: A total of 63 patients were chosen including 41 men, with 40.91 years as the average age and the sex ratio was 1.86. In 90.48% of cases, the front door was dental. All patients took antibiotics before their admission. Pus culture was positive in 34/63 subjects (53.97%) and showed monomicrobial infection. The isolates were Gram-negative bacilli for 20.59% and Gram-positive cocci for 79.41%. These isolates were all resistant to certain beta-lactams (such as amoxicillin, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid). However, some isolates were susceptible to cefoxitin, ceftazidime and ceftriaxone. All isolates were sensitive to amikacin for aminoglycosides. As for macrolides, erythromycin had excellent activity (100%) against Gram-positive cocci. Indeed, some isolates were susceptible and others resistant to ciprofloxacin for quinolones. Conclusion: Bacteriological profile and antimicrobial susceptibility knowledge of cervicofacial cellulitis may propose an effective probabilistic antibiotic therapy protocol.

Intestinal Parasitosis in Children among Internally Displaced Persons in the Hauts-Bassins Region of Burkina Faso

Introduction: The setting up of camps for internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso as a result of terrorism creates favorable conditions for the emergence of digestive parasitosis in these displaced populations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of digestive parasitosis in children of this population in the Hauts-Bassins region. Material and methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study from November to December 2020, in which stool samples were collected from internally displaced children from the Sinfra reception site in Banzon and from Poya in Karangasso Vigué. The stool samples were stored at room temperature, protected from dust and insects, in a cooler and then sent to the laboratory of the CHUSS in Bobo-Dioulasso where the parasitological analyses were performed. Results: The mean age was 5.8 ± 2.4 years. The most represented age group was 5 to 10 years (75.31%). The sex ratio is 1.61. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasite infection was 53.09%. The prevalence was statistically higher among those who consumed well water than those consuming tap water (p = 0.01). Monoparasitism by protozoa and helminths represented 74.42% and 6.68% respectively. The polyparasitism rate was 9.31%. The species identified in monoparasite patients were protozoa with Entamoeba coli (37.21%), Giardia lamblia (25.58%), Endolimax nanus (6.98%) and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (4.65%). Biparasitism was identified with combinations, such as E. coli + E. histolytica/dispar (11.63%). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of digestive parasitosis among IDPs in the Sinfra and Poya reception site. Educational sessions on hand washing before meals, use of drinking water, etc. should emphasize preventive measures in these IDP camps.
