Relationships between soil pollution by heavy metals and melanin-dependent coloration of a fossorial amphisbaenian reptile

Melanin is the basis of coloration in many animals,and although it is often used in communication,thermoregulation,or camouflage,melanin has many other physiological *** example,in polluted habitats,melanin can have a detoxifying *** coloration would help to sequester in the skin the heavy metal contaminants from inside the body,which will be expelled to the exterior when the skin is ***,animals should have evolved more melanic colorations in more polluted habitats(“industrial melanism”hypothesis).We examined whether the fossorial amphisbaenian reptile,Trogonophis wiegmanni,is able to eliminate heavy metals,derived from soil pollution by seagull depositions,through sloughing its *** results suggest a covariation between levels of soil pollution by heavy metals and the concentration of heavy metals in the sloughed skins of *** suggests that amphisbaenians may expel heavy metals from their bodies when they slough the *** also tested whether amphisbaenians inhabiting soils with higher levels of heavy metal pollution had darker(melanin-dependent)body ***,contrary to predictions from the“industrial melanization”hypothesis,we found a negative relationship between soil pollution and proportions of melanic *** contradictory result could,however,be explained because heavy metals have endocrine disruption effects that increase physiological stress,and higher stress levels could result in decreased *** suggest that although amphisbaenians might have some detoxifying mechanism linked to melanin in the skin,this process might be negatively affected by stress and result ineffective under conditions of high soil pollution.

Particulate matter emissions(PM10)from the combustion,in a residential stove,of two com-mercial brands of certified(ENplus A1)pellets,a non-certified brand and laboratory made pellets of acacia were tested for their ability to induce ecotoxic,cytotoxic,and mutagenic re-sponses in unicellular organisms and a human cell *** was evaluated through the Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition ***,cytotoxicity was assessed at two time points(24-and 48-hr)through two complementary techniques in order to evaluate the cellular metabolic activity and membrane integrity of human lung epithelial cells *** Ames test using two Salmonella typhimurium strains(TA100 and TA98)was employed to assess the mutagenic potential of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fraction extracted from the PM10 *** obtained with the bioluminescent bacteria indicated that only particles from the combustion of acacia pellets were *** samples induced im-pairment on the A549 cells metabolic activity,while no significant release of lactate dehy-drogenase was ***10 emissions from acacia pellets were the most cytotoxic,while samples from both certified pellets evoked significant cytotoxicity at lower ***-icity time-dependency was only observed for PM10 from the combustion of acacia pellets and one of the brands of certified *** activity was not detected in both *** murium *** study emphasises the role of the raw material for pellet manu-facturing on the toxicological profile of PM *** raw materials should be deeply investigated before their use in pelletisation and combustion in residential appli-ances.

The adsorption capacity of hydrogels derived from modified xylan hemicellulose has been tested in order to develop new bio-based adsorbent materials useful for removing metal ions pollutants,such as Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ)and Pb(Ⅱ)from an aqueous *** was extracted from bleached kraft pulp of eucalyptus and subsequently modified with different proportions of functional sulfonic acid groups(HA3-HA7)and sulfonate groups(HS30-HS70)to generate *** results showed that all the synthesized hydrogels were capable of adsorbing metal ions,being the hydrogels with 30%and 50%xylan the ones that presented the highest adsorption *** capacity studies at different initial concentrations revealed that at an initial concentration of 300 mg·L-1,the HA3 hydrogel presented an adsorption capacity of 193mg Pb(Ⅱ),182 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 66 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HA5 hydrogel presented a capacity of 185 mg Pb(Ⅱ),113 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 48 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HS30 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption of 205 mg Pb(Ⅱ),174 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 71 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g hydrogel,and HS50 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption capacity of 273 mg Pb(Ⅱ),143 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 45 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** results show that modified Xylan hemicellulose is a promising adsorbent for removal Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ)ions from aqueous solutions.

Functional traits: the pathways to riverine plant resistance in times of hydropeaking

Hydropeaking, which refers to rising or falling discharges caused by the turning on or off of hydro-turbines to generate electricity, is a topic of growing interest due to its impact on fluvial ecosystems. To date, most hydropeaking studies have focused on the impact of peak fluctuations on invertebrate and fish communities, but little attention has been paid to its impact on riverine plants and how functional traits may make them resistant to *** performed a review to assess how a set of 32 plant functional traits can be expressed in riverine plant species,and found evidence of how such expression affects their capacity to cope with common sources of hydropeaking disturbance(i.e., inundation, fast water drawdown, and rapid water fluctuations linked to up-ramping and downramping hydropeaking operations). The information here presented can simplify the evaluation of impacts on riverine plant communities worldwide, as well as to detect suitable species to successfully restore rivers affected by hydropower production.

Dysregulation of apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major health problem, being the sixth most common cancer world-wide. Dysregulation of the balance between proliferation and cell death represents a pro-tumorigenic principle in human hepatocarcinogenesis. This review updates the recent relevant contributions reporting molecular alterations for HCC that induce an imbalance in the regulation of apoptosis. Alterations in the expression and/or activation of p53 are frequent in HCC cells, which confer on them resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. Many HCCs are also insensitive to apoptosis induced either by death receptor ligands, such as FasL or TRAIL, or by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). Although the expression of some pro-apoptotic genes is decreased, the balance between death and survival is dysregulated in HCC mainly due to overactivation of anti-apoptotic pathways. Indeed, some molecules involved in counteracting apoptosis, such as Bcl-XL, Mcl-1, c-IAP1, XIAP or survivin are over-expressed in HCC cells. Furthermore, some growth factors that mediate cell survival are upregulated in HCC, as well as the molecules involved in the machinery responsible for cleavage of their proforms to an active peptide. The expression and/or activation of the JAK/STAT, PI3K/AKT and RAS/ERKs pathways are enhanced in many HCC cells, conferring on them resistance to apoptotic stimuli. Finally, recent evidence indicates that inflammatory processes, as well as the epithelial-mesenchymal transitions that occur in HCC cells to facilitate their dissemination, are related to cell survival. Therefore, therapeutic strategies to selectively inhibit anti-apoptotic signals in liver tumor cells have the potential to provide powerful tools to treat HCC.

Effect of Polymer Inclusion in Preparation of Thick LZO Buffer Layers for YBCO Coated Conductors

In this work, water-based precursor solutions suitable for dip-coating of thick La2Zr2O7 （LZO） buffer layers for coated conductors on Ni-5%W substrates with an inclusion of polymeric polyvinyl pyrrolidone were developed. The effect of varying percentage of the polymer addition on the preparation of the deposited films with maximum crack-free thickness was investigated. This novel water-based chemical solution deposition method involving polymers in two different chelate-chemistry compositions revealed the possibility to grow single, crack-free layers with thicknesses ranging from 140 to 280 nm, with good crystallinity and epitaxial growth. The effect of increasing polymer concentrations on the morphology and the structure of the films was studied. The appropriate buffer layer action of the films in preventing Ni diffusion was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Perceptions of Healthcare Professionals on COVID-19 in Lesotho: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Health care professionals at the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic require continued support to ensure not only their well-being, but enhanced care for those infected by the disease. This study aimed to assess the perceptions of health care providers regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Lesotho. Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from 190 healthcare workers who were conveniently sampled from a total of 25 health care facilities and completed structured questionnaires. Data were collected in September 2021 and analyzed using SPSS (vs23). Permission to conduct this study was granted by the relevant authorities. Informed written consent was given by the respondents in writing before they could take part in this study. Results: Respondents had positive views about the COVID-19 pandemic, and they were associated with the level of education. They understood that COVID-19 can affect anyone, including themselves and is not a disease for any particular race. They perceived that they could contract COVID-19, even despite pre-existing conditions, and there was a positive prognosis after contracting COVID-19 if necessary precautions were taken. Furthermore, they knew that the virus was affecting many people worldwide, including the elderly, who were willing to be tested. Respondents felt the testing procedure was rather painful and uncomfortable. The test providers were friendly and not rude, and respondents did not have any preferred gender for them. Respondents were also willing to discuss issues on COVID-19 with families and friends, and they lived close to health care facilities. Conclusions: This study concludes that healthcare professionals at the frontline were mostly nurses, and they had positive perceptions about the COVID-19 pandemic as they were knowledgeable and willing to test for the disease. Test providers were viewed as pleasant and healthcare facilities were accessible. Support for frontline healthcare

Platelet-rich plasma： combinational treatment modalities for musculoskeletal conditions

Current research on common musculoskeletal problems, including osteoart]cular cona]t]ons, tendinopathies, and muscle injuries, focuses on regenerative translational medicine. Platelet-rich plasma therapies have emerged as a potential approach to enhance tissue repair and regeneration. Platelet-rich plasma application aims to provide supraphysiological concentrations of platelets and optionally leukocytes at injured/pathological tissues mimicking the initial stages of healing. However, the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma is controversial in chronic diseases because patients＇ outcomes show partial improvements. Platelet-rich plasma can be customized to specific conditions by selecting the most appropriate formulation and timing for application or by combining platelet-rich plasma with synergistic or complementary treatments. To achieve this goal, researchers should identify and enhance the main mechanisms of healing. In this review, the interactions between platelet-rich plasma and healing mechanisms were addressed and research opportunities for customized treatment modalities were outlined. The development of combinational platelet-rieh plasma treatments that can be used safely and effectively to manipulate healing mechanisms would be valuable and would provide insights into the processes involved in physiological healing and pathological failure.
