There is an increasing interest in restoring degraded forests,which occupy half of the forest *** the forms of restoration,passive restoration,which involves the elimination of degrading factors and the free evolution of natural dynamics by applying minimal or no management,is gaining *** dynamics is difficult to predict due to the influence of multiple interacting factors such as climatic and edaphic conditions,composition and abundance of species,and the successional character of these ***,we study the natural dynamics of a mixed forest located in central Spain,which maintained an open forest structure,due to intensive use,until grazing and cutting were banned in the *** most frequent woody species in this forest are Fagus sylvatica,Quercus petraea,Quercus pyrenaica,Ilex aquifolium,Sorbus aucuparia,Sorbus aria and Prunus avium,with contrasting shade and drought *** species are common in temperate European deciduous forest and are found here near their southern distribution limit,except for *** order to analyze forest dynamics and composition,three inventories were carried out in 1994,2005 and *** results show that,despite the Mediterranean influence,the natural dynamics of this forest has been mainly determined by different levels of shade *** the abandonment of grazing and cutting,*** expanded rapidly due to its lower shade tolerance,whereas after canopy closure and forest densification,shade-tolerant species gained ground,particularly ***,despite its lower drought and late-frost *** the current dynamics continue,*** will overtake the rest of the species,which will be relegated to sites with shallow soils and steep ***,all the multi-centennial beech trees,which are undergoing a rapid mortality and decline process,will disappear.

Climate change and biodiversity loss are pressing global challenges(Pörtner et al.,2021).However,as global energy demand continues to increase(IEA,2021),nations face significant challenges to decarbonization and reaching“net zero”due to trade-offs between the often-competing needs of renewable energy generation and biodiversity *** example,hydropower generates renewable energy(Gibson et al.,2017),yet there are well-documented and severe consequences of dam development for biodiversity(e.g.,Zarfl et al.,2019)and people(e.g.,Bisht,2009)due to reservoir creation and disruption of river *** such potentially damaging ecological and social trade-offs,hydropower currently contributes 70%of global renewable energy and there are at least 3700 large dams planned or under construction globally(Zhang&Gu,2023).

Propyl-propane-thiosulfonate(PTSO)is one of the main organosulfur compounds present in Allium essential oils with a widely documented biological *** this reason,it could be used as a food and feed additive in the agri-food industry.A genotoxicity evaluation of substances and their metabolites present in food is necessary to guarantee the consumer’s health following the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA).To evaluate the toxicological profile of derivatives of PTSO,the cytotoxicity,an Ames test,a micronucleus test and the comet assay were *** showed that non-cytotoxic effects were observed in Caco-2 exposed to s-propyl mercaptocysteine(CSSP)and s-propyl mercaptoglutathione(GSSP)(0-450μM).The mutagenicity index remained in the range of 0.6-1.4 for both compounds,showing no mutagenic effects for the concentrations of 5000-312.5μg GSSP/plate and 250-15.63μg CSSP/***,the%binucleated cells with micronuclei were 1.3-2.2 and 1.6-2.7 for GSSP and GSSP,*** comet assays there was no DNA-genotoxic or oxidative damage in a concentration range of 112.5-450μ***,we can conclude that these compounds are not genotoxic at the conditions *** results support that the presence of CSSP and GSSP in the food/feed is not of concern,although further studies are needed to complete their safety profile.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex, chronic condition, which causes widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and a variety of other symptoms. Many polymorphisms related to neuroendocrine system function as the ApoE isoforms, Val158Met polymorphism in COMT, as well as a 44 bp deletion located in 5-HTTLPR, have been studied. Other polymorphisms have been related to inflammatory response such as the 70 bp VNTR in IL-4 or to citokine levels. Furthermore, some studies focused on finding out new FM related SNPs, have been performed by genome wide association scan (GWAS). The target of this work was to study a possible linkage of a collagen type I polymorphism (COL1A1 rs180012 SNP) affecting bone mineralization, with fibromyalgia. Results obtained show a clear association of ss homozygous genotype with FM patients no dependent on bone mineralization.

The inhibition of a-glucosidase and glucose-6-phosphatase,two enzymes involved in the carbohydrate metabolism,is an important target to control glycaemia on individuals with type 2 *** this work we report for the first time the inhibition of both enzymes by the antihyperglycemic n-butanol extract from Genista tenera(Fabaceae).This extract decreased a-glucosidase and glucose-6-phosphatase activities to 0.97 and 80.25%,respectively,being more effective than acarbose,and phlorizin,the positive controls,which reduced enzymes activities only to 17.39 and 96.06%.Once inflammation and oxidative stress are related to diabetic impairments,the anti-inflammatory activity of the extract was also evaluated,through its inhibitory activity over COX-1 enzyme(47.5%inhibition).Moreover,after induction of oxidative stress by UV radiation,the viability of irradiated rat liver hepatoma cells exposed to the extract was significantly higher(67.82%)than that promoted by ascorbic acid,the positive control(45.05%).In addition,the stability of the extract under gastrointestinal conditions was evaluated by HPLC–DAD-ESI–MS/*** diglycosides were identified as the main constituents of the extract,and no alterations in the chemical composition nor in the antioxidant activity were observed after in vitro digestion with artificial gastric and pancreatic juices.

Protective and Regenerative Anti-Pollution Efficacy of a Plant Oil-Based Day and Night Cream: Investigated by a Novel Approach to Reveal the Impact of Pollutants on Epidermal Barrier Integrity and Lipid Matrix

In the wake of ever-increasing environmental pollution, human skin in the modern urban world is exposed to increased levels of harmful environmental pollutants. Many studies have shown that these pollutants can weaken the epidermal skin barrier and thus facilitate the penetration of these substances into the skin. An important goal of modern skin care against harmful environmental influences should therefore be to protect and strengthen the epidermal barrier and to repair occurring damage quickly and efficiently. With this in mind, in the present study we investigated what damage cigarette smoke causes to the epidermal barrier and 1) whether the regular application of a O/W emulsion (Day Cream) can protectively strengthen the epidermal barrier against environmental damage and 2) whether a cigarette smoke-induced disruption of the epidermal barrier is restored faster and better by the regular application of a another O/W emulsion (Night Cream) than in product-untreated skin. The two products are slightly different in plant-oil, active ingredient composition and texture. Firstly, the study has shown that the Lipbarvis? method is suitable for measuring the effect of cigarette smoke, in contrast to conventional biophysical measurement methods (transepidermal water loss, skin hydration). Secondly, both products were able to improve skin barrier function in the corresponding test scenario. This was demonstrated for both test products by a significantly reduced TEWL, significantly increased skin hydration and significantly improved length of the lipid lamellae in the intercellular space, as well as the protective effect of the day cream on the epidermal skin barrier and the regenerative properties of the tested night cream. .
