Feed intake pattern of broiler chickens under intermittent lighting:Do birds eat in the dark?

This paper reflects the results of a short experiment conducted in parallel with a larger trial which aimed to test the assumption that ’consumption of feed by broiler chickens during periods of darkness is largely negligible’. To that effect, on d 31, feeders of birds raised under intermittent lighting(IL), i.e. 1 h of light[1L]:3 h of dark(3D):1L:3D:1L:3D:1L:3D:2L:6D, were weighed at the onset and at the end of each period of darkness(or scotoperiod). Moreover, in order to compare the feeding behavior of IL birds with that of broilers raised under continuous lighting(CL, i.e, 18L:6D), their feeders were weighed in parallel and at the same time points. On d 31, feed intake of IL birds during scotoperiods represented 45% of their 24 h feed intake. Both CL and IL birds presented anticipatory feed intake prior to the long nocturnal period of darkness(6D), as well as higher feed intake right at the onset of lighting at 06:00. Feed intake of CL birds during the 6D nocturnal scotoperiod was negligible at around 2% of their total feed intake. Intermittent lighting birds exhibited excitement at the start of each hour-length scotoperiod and, within that time,ingested around 2.5 times the amount of feed ingested by CL birds. Although short, this study revealed several interesting observations which might be worth further exploring in a larger, lengthier, behaviorfocused experiment. Amongst other factors, it might be interesting to understand whether the high feed intake observed during scotoperiods for IL birds in reflective of the whole flock or rather a coping mechanism developed mainly by hierarchically lower-ranking birds to achieve their daily feed intakes requirements.

Neutropenic Fever in Lung Cancer:Clinical Aspects Related to Mortality and Antibiotic Failure

Background and objectives:Lung cancer(LC)is the leading cause of cancer death.Patients treated with chemotherapy are at risk of developing chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia(FN),a potentially life-threatening complication.The aims of this study were(1)to characterize FN admissions of patients with LC in a pulmonology department,and(2)to determine associations between patient profiles,first-line antibiotic failure(FLAF)and mortality.Methods:Retrospective observational case-series,based on the analysis of medical records of LC patients that required hospitalization due to chemotherapy-induced FN.Results:A total of 42 cases of FN were revised,corresponding to 36 patients,of which 86.1%were male,with a mean age of 66.71±9.83 years.Most patients had a performance status(Ps)equal or less than 1,and metastatic disease was present in 40.5%(n=17).Respiratory tract infections accounted for 42.9%(n=18)of FN cases,and multidrug-resistant staphylococcus aureus was the most isolated agent.The mortality rate was 16.7%(n=7),and the FLAF was 26.2%(n=11).Mortality was associated with a Ps≥2(P=0.011),infection by a Gram-negative agent(P=0.001)and severe anemia(P=0.048).FLAF was associated with longer hospitalizations(P=0.020),Ps≥2(P=0.049),respiratory infections(P=0.024),and infection by a Gram-negative(P=0.003)or multidrug-resistant agent(P=0.014).Conclusions:Lower Ps,severe anemia,and infections by Gram-negative or multi-resistant agents seem to be associated with worse outcomes in FN patients.

sARs-CoV-2 consequences for mental health:Neuroinflammatory pathways linking COVID-19 to anxiety and depression

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has been linked to an increased prevalence of mental health disorders,particularly anxiety and depression.Moreover,the COVID-19 pandemic has caused stress in people worldwide due to several factors,including fear of infection;social isolation;difficulty in adapting to new routines;lack of coping methods;high exposure to social media,misinformation,and fake reports;economic impact of the measures implemented to slow the contagion and concerns regarding the disease pathogenesis.COVID-19 patients have elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines,such as interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6,and tumor necrosis factor-α,and other inflammation-related factors.Furthermore,invasion of the central nervous system by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(sARs-CoV-2)may potentially contribute to neuroinflammatory alterations in infected individuals.Neuroinflammation,a consequence of psychological stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic,may also play a role in the development of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the general population.Considering that neuroinflammation plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety,this study investigated the effects of sARs-CoV-2 on mental health and focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the neuroinflammatory pathways.

Chronic stress is a consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed for a long period of time and it has been defi ned as a maladaptive state that is associated with altered hypothalamic pituitary adrenal(HPA)axis.The hyperactivity of the HPA axis is commonly assessed by cortisol levels.Physical activity(PA)and exercise have been demonstrated to regulate cortisol patterns in different healthy study populations,but also in BC patients and survivors.The PA and exercise are related but have distinct concepts that are commonly misused.Nowadays,the regular practice of PA and exercise has been widely recognized as one main strategy to manage chronic stress and its related markers,like cortisol,remains elusive.In the present review,the authors focused on the evidence of the PA and exercise on cortisol patterns of BC patients and survivors.

The regulation of stomatal aperture opening and closure represents an evolutionary battle between plants and pathogens,characterized by adaptive strategies that influence both plant resistance and pathogen virulence.The ongoing climate change introduces further complexity,affecting pathogen invasion and host immunity.This review delves into recent advances on our understanding of the mechanisms governing immunity-related stomatal movement and patterning with an emphasis on the regulation of stomatal opening and closure dynamics by pathogen patterns and host phytocytokines.In addition,the review explores how climate changes impact plant–pathogen interactions by modulating stomatal behavior.In light of the pressing challenges associated with food security and the unpredictable nature of climate changes,future research in this field,which includes the investigation of spatiotemporal regulation and engineering of stomatal immunity,emerges as a promising avenue for enhancing crop resilience and contributing to climate control strategies.

Bioactive compounds of red grapes from Dao region(Portugal):Evaluation of phenolic and organic profile

Objective:To improve the knowledge on the metabolite profile of five red grapes from D?o region(Portugal),concerning to the phenolic characteristics(coloured and non-coloured phenolics) and organic acid composition.Methods:Five red grapes collected from D?o region were studied.The profiles of phenolic compounds and organic acids were estimated by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection and high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detector,respectively.Results:Totally 24 phenolic compounds were identified,and distributed by several classes:8 anthocyanins,1 hydroxybenzoic acid,4 hydroxycinnamic acids,1 stilbene,4flavan-3-ols,6 flavonols.Additionally,10 organic acids were detected in all samples.Total contents of each phenolic class and organic acids amounts varied significantly among the different grape cultivars investigated.The principal components analysis differentiates the Touriga Nacional from the other varieties due to their high contents in anthocyanins,non-coloured phenolics and organic acids.Touriga Nacional is an important red grape cultivar,highly esteemed in D?o region for its ability to produce high quality wines.Conclusions:The results suggest that the red grapes from D?o region present a good composition in bioactive compounds,being important for the production of wines with superior quality.

Agmatine as a novel candidate for rapid-onset antidepressant response

Major depressive disorder(MDD)is a disabling and highly prevalent mood disorder as well as a common cause of suicide.Chronic stress,inflammation,and intestinal dysbiosis have all been shown to play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of MDD.Although conventional antidepressants are widely used in the clinic,they can take weeks to months to produce therapeutic effects.The discovery that ketamine promotes fast and sustaining antidepressant responses is one of the most important breakthroughs in the pharmacotherapy of MDD.However,the adverse psychomimetic/dissociative and neurotoxic effects of ketamine discourage its chronic use.Therefore,agmatine,an endogenous glutamatergic modulator,has been postulated to elicit fast behavioral and synaptogenic effects by stimulating the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 signaling pathway,similar to ketamine.However,recent evidence has demonstrated that the modulation of the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 inflammasome and gut microbiota,which have been shown to play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of MDD,may also participate in the antidepressant-like effects of both ketamine and agmatine.This review seeks to provide evidence about the mechanisms that may underlie the fast antidepressant-like responses of agmatine in preclinical studies.Considering the anti-inflammatory properties of agmatine,it may also be further investigated as a useful compound for the management of MDD associated with a pro-inflammatory state.Moreover,the fast antidepressant-like response of agmatine noted in animal models should be investigated in clinical studies.
