For the years 2008-2013, particles of diameter 〈 10 and 2.5 μm （PM10 and PM2.5, respectively）, NOx, SO2, and O3 concentrations at urban, suburban, rural, and traffic sites in the Paris metropolitan area were analyzed. Strong spatial variability at traffic and rural sites and relatively uniform profiles at urban and suburban sites for PM10, PM2.5, and O3 were observed. The O3 weekend effect was induced by lower NOx emissions during the weekend, and favored volatile organic compounds （VOCs）-limited atmospheric conditions. In conJunction with low ambient temperature, these conditions could also favor increased formation of secondary particulate nitrates in winter. Winter air pollution events were associated with multiple pollutants, whereas those observed in spring were caused by high PM10 and PM2.5 levels. Back- ward trajectory analyses showed the contribution of sources in Western and Central Europe on days with high PM10, PM2.5, and O3, and a local/national comvonent for NOx and SO2.

Introduction: Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive endoscopic surgery which provides access to the ureter, pyelon and calyceal cavities via the urethra and the bladder. Laser ureteroscopy uses the laser as an energy source to treat the stone and eliminate it naturally. Minimally invasive endoscopic methods are struggling to become popular in sub-Saharan African countries, especially for the upper urinary tract. The objective of our work was to report the results of our first laser ureteroscopy experience in the department. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective and descriptive study running from December 1, 2023 to February 19, 2024. Included in our study was any case of upper urinary tract stone operated by Laser ureteroscopy. The characteristics of the lithiasis were determined by CT scan. Sterilization of urine was verified by carrying out a cytobacteriological examination of urine. Ureteral lithiasis was approached by semi-rigid ureteroscopy. Renal lithiasis was immediately addressed by flexible ureteroscopy. Ureteroscopy was coupled with a Holmium YAg laser. A double J ureteral catheter was placed after the operation. A 230 µm laser fiber was used in each case with a generator with a power of 35 watts (Storz Calculase III type). An access sheath was used in all cases of flexible ureteroscopy. The parameters studied were: sociodemographic characteristics, lithiasis (site, size, number, density, topography), type of anesthesia, duration of laser use, duration of intervention, postoperative outcomes. Data entry and analysis were carried out using the software (Word 2016 and SPSS). Result: We collected 30 cases of laser ureteroscopy. The average age was 37 years with extremes of 9 and 79 years. The male gender was more represented. The most common age group was 24-39 years old. Renal colic was the most frequent reason for admission, 12 patients (40%). On physical examination, lumbar tenderness was present in 47% (14 patients). ECBU was positive in 4 patients

This paper addresses two issues that concern the electricity market participants under the European day-ahead market(DAM)framework,namely the feasibility of the attained schedules and the non-confiscation of cleared *** address the first issue,new resource-specific orders,i.e.,thermal orders for thermal generating units,demand response orders for load responsive resources,and energy limited orders for storage resources,are proposed and incorporated in the existing European DAM clearing *** address the second issue,two approaches which lead to a non-confiscatory market are analyzed:①discriminatory pricing with side-payments(***);and②non-discriminatory pricing excluding out-ofmoney orders(European paradigm).A comparison is performed between the two approaches to investigate the most appropriate pricing rule in terms of social welfare,derived revenues for the sellers,and efficiency of the attained *** proposed model with new resource-specific products is evaluated in a European test system,achieving robust *** feasibility of the attained schedules is demonstrated when using resource-specific orders compared with block ***,the results indicate the supremacy of discriminatory pricing with side-payments compared with the current European pricing rule.

Real-time video data transmission is currently emerging as a popular application among mobile users but it is very sensitive to QoS degradation due to packet losses in wireless *** order to achieve service continuity and integrity upon handoffs among heterogeneous networks,provisioning of seamless and secure mobility is ***,in order to reduce the delay and packet losses during vertical handovers we need to employ supportive protocols like context *** this paper we evaluate the QoS of video transmission over a heterogeneous 3g-WLAN *** aggregate video data traffic is represented by a dynamic two-dimensional Markov chain model,which has been evaluated against real video data *** the vertical handover, appropriate AAA handshaking and enhanced mobility management using context transfer have been *** QoS evaluation of video streams was performed based on peak signal-noise ratio(PSNR) measurements,while we analyticallyestimated the number of packet losses during *** results show that both packet loss within the converged network and loss occurrence affecting the perceived video quality is reduced. Moreover,the proposed context transfer scheme minimizes handover delay and the number of lost packet up to 3 times compared to standard AAA handshaking.

Statistical analyses and descriptive characterizations are sometimes assumed to be offering information on time series *** the scientific interest suggested by such assumptions,the relationships between descriptive time series features(e.g.,temporal dependence,entropy,seasonality,trend and linearity features)and actual time series forecastability(quantified by issuing and assessing forecasts for the past)are scarcely studied and quantified in the *** this work,we aim to fill in this gap by investigating such relationships,and the way that they can be exploited for understanding hydroclimatic forecastability and its *** this end,we follow a systematic framework bringing together a variety of–mostly new for hydrology–concepts and methods,including 57 descriptive features and nine seasonal time series forecasting methods(i.e.,one simple,five exponential smoothing,two state space and one automated autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average methods).We apply this framework to three global datasets originating from the larger global Historical Climatology Network(gHCN)and global Streamflow Indices and Metadata(gSIM)*** these datasets comprise over 13,000 monthly temperature,precipitation and river flow time series from several continents and hydroclimatic regimes,they allow us to provide trustable characterizations and interpretations of 12-month ahead hydroclimatic forecastability at the global *** first find that the exponential smoothing and state space methods for time series forecasting are rather equally efficient in identifying an upper limit of this forecastability in terms of Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency,while the simple method is shown to be mostly useful in identifying its lower *** then demonstrate that the assessed forecastability is strongly related to several descriptive features,including seasonality,entropy,(partial)autocorrelation,stability,(non)linearity,spikiness and heterogeneity features

The palm, Elaeis guineensis, has its origins in Africa but is planted on a commercial basis in several countries. Statistics for 2002 showed that in the lead for land mass under oil palm cultivation is Indonesia, at 3,769,000. ha, followed by Malaysia at 3,376,000. ha; however, the world’s leading producer of palm oil is still Malaysia, since the 1970’s. Both countries are predicted to produce 82.4% of the world’s palm oil production by the year 2005. However, the palm is susceptible to basal stem rot, a devastating disease which results in direct loss of field stands and to which no effective chemical control is yet available. Caused by ganoderma boninense, infected palms appear symptomless, at the first sign of disease, at least 50% of the internal trunk tissue stem would have actually rotted. This study investigated the efficacy of Trichoderma harzianum (isolate FA 1132) as a biological control agent, using 6-month old oil palm seedlings as models and the experiment performed in a greenhouse at 29- 30 ℃. ambient conditions. The plants were artificially infected with g. boninense and a conidial suspension of 1×109-9×109 spores/mL was applied as a soil drench at 1L/plant every 2 weeks for 20 weeks. The parameters examined were efficacy of the biocontrol agent and the effect of Trichoderma- incorporated mulch in addition to the soil drench. Efficacy was assessed in terms disease severity index (DSI) where a higher percentage indicates a higher severity. Results showed that infection first sets in on untreated plants at week 12 and got worse progressively. The completely untreated plants were all infected and the DSI at 20 weeks after infection (wa.i.) was 92.5%. Plants given only a Trichoderma -infused food base supplement without conidial suspension gave a DSI of 70% whereas those given a conidial soil drench without supplemental food base gave a DSI of 85% at 20 w.a.i. Infected plants given a conidial treatment together with a food base supplement gave a DSI of 5%

The European Union, in an effort to boost the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in power generation, applies supportive tools consisting in financial motivation either as grants or as subsidies. According to welfare economics, a subsidy should reflect the external benefits;otherwise a distortion of competition takes place. The most widespread method to calculate externalities is the avoided cost approach, despite the fact that it encounters equally all the RES units leading to technological neutrality. In the present article, the avoided cost approach with the objective social justification of RES subsidies/feed in tariffs (FITs) in the case of greece, for the year 2014, is applied. The results show a high gap between the current FITs and the suggested ones amounting to approximately 40%. This uncomfortable outcome indicates that, at least in the case of greece, either the level of the current guaranteed tariffs is not socially justified, or the CO2 value derived from the European carbon market does not reflect the real social cost, or that the avoided cost method, alone, is not adequate to explain the level of subsidies. In light of the foregoing, the need for the development of a concrete and integrated methodology for calculating all RES externalities emerges.

Liver histology in ICU patients dying from sepsis:A clinico-pathological study

AIM:To determine end-stage pathologic changes in the liver of septic patients dying in the intensive care unit. METHODS: Needle liver biopsies obtained immediately after death from 15 consecutive patients with sepsis and no underlying liver disease were subjected to routine histological examination. Liver function tests and clinical monitoring measurements were also recorded. RESULTS: Liver biochemistries were increased in the majority of patients before death. Histology of liver bi- opsy specimens showed portal inflammation in 73.3%, centrilobular necrosis in 80%, lobular inflammation in 66.7%, hepatocellular apoptosis in 66.6% and cholan- gitis/cholangiolitis in 20% of patients. Mixed hepatitic/ cholestatic type of liver injury was observed in 6/15 (40%) patients and hepatitc in 9/15 (60%). Steatosis was ob- served in 11/15 (73.3%) patients affecting 5%-80% of liver parenchyma. Among the histological features, the presence of portal inflammation in liver biopsy was as- sociated with increased hospitalization in the ICU prior death (P = 0.026). CONCLUSION: Features of hepatitis and steatosis arethe main histological findings in the liver in the majority of patients dying from sepsis.
