Present study aims to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the crude methanolic extract and different fractions of the Epilobium roseum (Schreb). The extract and fractions were used against pathogenic bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus atrophaeus, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungal strains (Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus). The methanolic extract and their sub fraction n-hexane showed a prominent inhibition zone against all bacterial strains but inactive against fungal strains. In this study we analyzed blood samples collected from 400 high risk patients for the prevalence of an inflammatory viral disease hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) with the help of standard kit assay and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All the samples were selected randomly from the various places of District Gujrat, Pakistan. All the selected cases were first divided into four groups according to the age and sex (Group 1, Male below age 35 years;Group 2, Male above age 35 years;Group 3, Female below age 35 years;Group 4, Female above age 35 years), each group was comprised of 100 individual patients and analyzed for different parameters for the presence of HBV and HCV in comparison with positive and negative controls. The prevalence of HBV and HCV was higher in groups 2 (22%) and 4 (39%) respectively. Assay profile revealed that the incidence of HCV was higher in female patients as compare to the male patients. The present study indicates that more than 60% of the cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in the Region is attributable to hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

Lithopedion is a rare phenomenon resulting from an extra-uterine pregnancy that advances to fetal demise and calcification and there are less than 300 cases reported in 400 years of medical literature. This rare condition was first described by a surgeon of the Arabic era of medicine in the 10th century. This case report is a 26-year-old, multiparous woman who had presented a lower abdominal pain for long time and she had never attended in pre-natal clinic. She came to our hospital with pain and tumoral mass in infra-umbilical area and then we referred to radiology center, after that ultrasound examination of radiology center demonstrated an extra-uterine abdominal 30-week pregnancy measuring the femoral length, this for first diagnosis of radiology center. After laparotomy was performed we met an oval shaped mass that attached the omentum in peritoneal cavity and this mass was a fetus retention of 5 years without calcified ovular membranes but the fetus was calcified so this type is called lithopedion that describes according to the Kuechenmeister classification in 1881. She made good post-operative recovery after extraction the stone baby.

Synovial sarcoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor. It occurs predominantly in the extremities especially in the region of the knee. The localization in palm hand is rare. We report a case of a 23 year-old man who present a monophasic synovial sarcoma of the left hand which presented as a painless cystic nodule. A surgical excision was performed. The result was good without recurrence. The synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spindle neoplasms of hand.

AIM: To study the efficacy of the enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS) program in laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for stomach ***: From June 2010 to December 2012, 61 gastric cancer patients who underwent laparoscopicassisted radical gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy at First Hospital of Jilin University were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial.(Clinical ***, registration ID: NCT01955096). The subjects were divided into the ERAS program group and the conventional control group. The clinical characteristics, recovery variables, and complications of patients were ***: The time to first ambulation, oral food intake, and time to defecation were significantly shorter in the ERAS group(n = 30), compared to the conventional group(n = 31; P = 0.04, 0.003, and 0.01, respectively). The postoperative hospital stay was less in the ERAS group(6.8 ± 1.1 d) compared to the conventional group(7.7 ± 1.1 d)(P = 0.002). There was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the ERAS(1/30) and conventional care groups(2/31)(P = 1.00). There were no readmissions or mortality during the 30-d follow-up ***: The ERAS program is associated with a shorter hospital stay in gastric cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. The ERAS protocol is useful in the treatment of gastric cancer.

Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal recessive genetic disease by mutation of the β globin gene. This mutation induces the synthesis of abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) HbS, Mainly responsible for all clinical manifestations vaso-occlusives and chronic hemolysis with variable anemia. The objective of this study is the determination profile of haematological parameters of sickle cell children of the province of Kenitra (Morocco). In order to know the usual values and the particularities which are its own, we have observed that 50% of sickle cell children in our case study have severe anemia and 84% in patients aged 5 to 11 years. In addition, there is no significant difference among gender. The cases of hemoglobinosis S are divided into: Homozygous hemoglobinosis S (43%), Heterozygous sickle cell disease (17%), Hemoglobinosis S associated with alpha-thalassemia (1%), Hemoglobinosis S composite heterozygosity S/beta-thalassemia (5%), S/PHHF composite heterozygosity (6%), eventually composite heterozygosity S/beta+ thalassemia (28%). Homozygous sickle cell children have a long hospital stay, the highest number of hospitalizations and very severe sickle cell syndromes compared to the other phenotypic status of our population.

Motivation has been found to play a major role in determining student performance in the academic process. The aim of this study is to identify the intrinsic ＆ extrinsic motivational factors among medical students in the University of Sharjah. A Cross Sectional Study was conducted among university students of medical colleges in the period between February 2011 and March 2011. A total of 452 students （337 females and 115 males） were selected using the Quota sampling method equally between each college. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of 13 demographic questions, an agreement scale of 32 questions about the motivational factors and an open ended question asking students about what the university can do to help motivate them were developed. The most common intrinsic factors chosen by students were grade expectation （94%）, interest in material （92%） and leading an honorable life （88%）. While on the other hand the most common extrinsic factors were upcoming exams （88%）, family expectations （88%） and praise （82%）. The most common factors were similar between all students regardless of their major, gender, or performance. However, differences were visible in other factors such as in high performing students; rewards scored a 71.4% while low performing students scored it at 50%. It also shows that females consider praise as an important factor （86%） on the contrary males gave it a 72%. While the most common intrinsic factors showed to be grades, interest in material and leading an honorable life, the most common extrinsic factors on the other hand were upcoming exams, family expectations and praise.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a term applied to describe depressive symptoms occurring during the first year of the postpartum period and is characterized by low mood, loss of enjoyment, reduced energy, and activity, marked functional impairment, reduced self-esteem, ideas or acts of self-harm or suicide. The women’s change into motherhood is a difficult period that involves significant changes in the psychological, social and physiological aspects, and is considered to increase vulnerability for the development of mental illness. In Somalia, 1 in 20 women aged 15 - 49 die due to pregnancy- or birth-related complications every year. This makes being pregnant in Somalia a risk that has its own stress and anxiety. Objective: To evaluate postpartum depression and associated factors among mothers who gave birth in the last 12 months in Mogadishu, Somalia. Methodology: The study is analytic cross sectional study design in which postpartum depression and its associated factors are measured. We used Cochran’s formula (Z2p(1 – p)/d2). Results: One fifth of the study population was found to have postpartum depression and the factors relating to it included marital status, substance abuse, mode and place of delivery. Conclusion: This shows that neglected mental health of the mothers in Somalia has its burden on the society. Recommendation: Mental health care component should be integrated with maternal care programs available in the country to work on prevention and control of motherhood related stress and depression among mothers who are giving birth under the very difficult circumstances in the country.

Background: The interplay between financial deprivation and tuberculosis (TB) is considered one of the vital socio-economic determinants of disease. This is the first study of its kind to be carried in Pakistan, which aims to identify leading factors contributing towards catastrophic costs of TB diagnosis and management in order to help policy makers. Methodology: From four tertiary care hospitals (TCH) in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, 400 TB patients were interviewed through a cross-sectional survey. The patient’s pre and post-TB income and direct and indirect costs for treatment were analysed following WHO recommendations. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify the determinants of catastrophic total cost. Results: For TB management expenditures, the median (interquartile range) of total costs by households was Rs. 58,175 Rs (32,050 - 97,500).
