Mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) is particularly prone to oxidation due to the lack of histones and a deficient mismatch repair *** explains an increased mutation rate of mtDNA that results in heteroplasmy,e.g.,the coexistence of the mutant and wild-type mtDNA molecules within the same *** diabetes mellitus,glycotoxicity,advanced oxidative stress,collagen cross-linking,and accumulation of lipid peroxides in foam macrophage cells and arterial wall cells may significantly decrease the mutation threshold required for mitochondrial dysfunction,which in turn further contributes to the oxidative damage of the diabetic vascular wall,endothelial dysfunc-tion,and atherosclerosis.

Problems associated with carbon support corrosion under operating fuel cell conditions require the identification of alternative supports for platinum-based nanosized *** supported on manganese vanadate(Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6))was prepared by microwave irradiation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction,Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy,and transmission electron *** borohydride oxidation reaction(BOR)on Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6) was studied in highly alkaline media using voltammetry,chronoamperometry,and electrochemical impedance *** electrocatalytic activity of Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6) was also compared with that of commercial Pt/C(46 wt%Pt)*** apparent activation energy of BOR at Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6) was estimated to be 32 k J mol^(-1) and the order of reaction to be 0.51,indicating that borohydride hydrolysis proceeds in parallel with its ***-term stability of Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6) under BOR typical conditions was observed.A laboratory-scale direct borohydride fuel cell assembled with a Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6) anode reached a specific power of 274 W g^(-1).Experimental results on Pt/Mnv_(2)O_(6) were complemented by DFT calculations,which indicated good adherence of Pt to Mnv_(2)O_(6),beneficial for electrocatalyst stability.

Suites of granitic and metamorphic rocks form a perfect geological environment in which to investigate the source of metals related to gold *** the East Province of Cameroon,the source of metals-related gold(grade~4.6 g/t)that occurs within metamorphic and granitic rocks remains *** host rocks were subjected to XRF and ICP-MS whole-rock geochemistry and BSE/EDS mineral analyses to investigate the source(s)of metals related to gold in the ***,chalcopyrite-pyrite and magnetite-ilmenite are the main sulfi des and oxides of granites,*** low-grade metamorphic rocks are sulfi de-rich consisting of arsenopyrite,chalcopyrite,pyrite,and sphalerite,and oxides include magnetite,ilmenite,hematite,and ***,Ni,Co,Sb,Sc,and Zn concentrations depleted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and granites compared to low-grade metamorphic *** well,Bi,Cd,Co,Cu,Ni,Sb,v,W,and Zn concentrations decrease with increasing temperatures from low-grade rocks to high-grade rocks and *** suite of depleted elements in high-grade rocks and granites is almost identical to those enriched in gold *** conclude that metals(Bi,Cd,Co,Cu,Ni,Sb,and Zn)related to gold mineralization in the East Province of Cameroon likely originated from metal-rich low-grade metamorphic rocks during prograde metamorphic processes prior to partial melting.

Background The genomes of worldwide poultry breeds divergently selected for performance and other phenotypic traits may also be affected by,and formed due to,past and current admixture *** to diverse environments,including acclimation to harsh climatic conditions,has also left selection footprints in breed *** Using the Chicken 50K_CobbCons SNP chip,we genotyped four divergently selected breeds:two aboriginal,cold tolerant Ushanka and Orloff Mille Fleur,one egg-type Russian White subjected to artificial selection for cold tolerance,and one meat-type White *** of selective sweeps were determined in the studied breeds using three methods:(1)assessment of runs of homozygosity islands,(2)F_(ST) based population differential analysis,and(3)haplotype differentiation *** regions of true selection signatures were identified by two or more methods or in two or more *** these regions,we detected 540 prioritized candidate genes supplemented them with those that occurred in one breed using one statistic and were suggested in other *** them,SOX5,ME3,ZNF536,WWP1,RIPK2,OSGIN2,DECR1,TPO,PPARGC1A,BDNF,MSTN,and beta-keratin genes can be especially mentioned as candidates for cold *** factors may be involved in regulating some of these important genes(e.g.,TPO and BDNF).Conclusion Based on a genome-wide scan,our findings can help dissect the genetic architecture underlying various phenotypic traits in chicken *** include genes representing the sine qua non for adaptation to harsh *** tolerance in acclimated chicken breeds may be developed following one of few specific gene expression mechanisms or more than one overlapping response known in cold-exposed individuals,and this warrants further investigation.

Early efforts to classify Mortierellaceae were based on macro-and micromorphology,but sequencing and phylogenetic studies with ribosomal DNA(rDNA)markers have demonstrated conflicting taxonomic groupings and polyphyletic *** some taxonomic confusion in the family has been clarified,rDNA data alone is unable to resolve higher level phylogenetic relationships within *** this study,we applied two parallel approaches to resolve the Mortierel-laceae phylogeny:low coverage genome(LCG)sequencing and high-throughput,multiplexed targeted amplicon sequenc-ing to generate sequence data for multi-gene *** then combined our datasets to provide a well-supported genome-based phylogeny having broad sampling depth from the amplicon *** the Mortierellaceae phylogeny into monophyletic genera resulted in 13 genera,7 of which are newly ***-coverage genome sequencing proved to be a relatively cost-effective means of generating a high-confidence *** multi-gene phylogenetics approach enabled much greater sampling depth and breadth than the LCG approach,but has limitations *** present this work to resolve some of the taxonomic confusion and provide a genus-level framework to empower future studies on Mortierellaceae diversity and evolution.

A conceptually new approach has been developed for the fabrication of magnetite(Fe3O4)-decorated carbon nanotubes(M-CNTs)for negative electrodes of electrochemical supercapacitors.M-CNTs were prepared by an ultrasonic-assisted chemical synthesis method,which involved dispersion of functionalized CNTs in water,Fe3O4 formation on the CNTs surface,and particle extraction through liquid-liquid interface(PELLI).Palmitic acid was found to be an efficient new extractor for *** slurries produced after drying and redispersing M-CNTs and slurries obtained using PELLI were used for electrode *** electrodes prepared using PELLI showed superior performance due to reduced particle *** results provided an insight into the influence of Fe3O4/CNTs mass ratio on the capacitance and capacitance retention at high charge-discharge rates.A capacitance of 5.82 F cm−2(145.4 F g−1)was achieved in Na2SO4 electrolyte using electrodes with high active mass of 40 mg cm−2 and ratio of active mass to current collector mass of *** electrochemical performance was achieved at low *** capacitance of the negative M-CNTs electrodes was comparable with capacitance of advanced positive MnO2-CNTs electrodes,which was beneficial for the fabrication of asymmetric *** asymmetric device has been fabricated,which showed promising performance in a voltage window of 1.6 v.

A new treatment paradigm for hepatitis C is that the treatment must include an existing direct-acting antiviral agent, namely, a protease inhibitor(PI) combined with PEGylated interferon-a and ribavirin. The currently mar-keted PIs and PIs in clinical trials have different mecha-nisms of action. The development of new PIs aims for an improved safety profile and higher effectiveness. This article reviews NS3/4A protease inhibitors, focusing on major criteria such as their effectiveness and safety. Specific attention is paid to dosing regimens and adverse event profiles of PIs administered in clinical settings.
