Assessment of variability and understanding of traits relationship in eggplant species are vital pre-requisite for formulating an effective breeding *** studied 23 genotypes of eggplants in a coarse-textured Ultisol using a randomized complete block design experiment with three *** were collected on number of branches,number of leaves,number of nodes and internodes,stem diameter,plant height,floral and yield *** revealed significant(p=0.05)variation in the flowering and fruiting pattern of the genotypes.‘Yalo x K3BC2P10 gave the highest individual fruit weight of 80.8 *** fruit weight contributed the highest direct positive effect on the fruit *** acted majorly through plant height,number of branches,number of leaves and number of days to first fruit set as revealed in the path coefficient *** fruit weight,number of fruits per plant,plant height,number of days to 50%flowering,number of branches,numbers of days to first flowering and 50%fruit set had positive direct effect on *** traits should be considered in developing high yielding eggplant breeding programme.

in the present study, a new ceramide, namely 2S, 3R-4E, 8E-2-(heptadecanoylamino)-heptadeca-4, 8-diene-1, 3-diol(1), along with four known steroids, including 24-methylcholesta-5, 24(28)-diene-3β-ol(2), 24-methylcholesta-5, 24(28)-diene-3β-acetate(3), 4-methyl-24-methylcholesta- 22-ene-3-ol(4), and cholesterol, was isolated and characterized from CH2Cl2/Me OH extract of Cespitularia stolonifera. A new acetate derivative of compound 1, termed 2S, 3R-4E, 8E-2-(heptadecanoylamino)-heptadeca-4, 8-diene-1, 3-diacetate(1a), was also prepared in the present study. All the structures were established on the basis of modern spectroscopic techniques, including FT-iR, 1D, 2D-NMR, HRESi-MS, and GC-MS, in addition of chemical methods.(-)-Alloaromadendren, ledane,(1)-alloaromadendren oxide, isoaromadendrene epoxide and(-)-caryophellen oxide were identified from the n-hexane fraction using GC-MS. The extract and the two ceramides(1) and(1a) exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against lung cancer A549 cells, while the extract and the two steroids(2) and(3) exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against breast cancer MCF-7 cells. The CH_2Cl_2/MeOH extract exhibited significant antiulcer activity in both ethanol and acetic acid induced ulcer models in rats, as evidenced by histopathological, histochemical, and biochemical examinations.

The objective of this work was to evaluate four parental lines of cucumber which included:‘Zeina’(Zna),‘Beit Alpha’(BA),‘Straight 8’(Strght 8)and‘Calypso’(Capso)and six F1s generated by diallel cross,using randomized complete block design with three replications to study heterosis and combining ability for yield and yield component *** heterosis showed that cross‘ZnaCapso’had the highest Better Parent(BP)heterosis in total fruit yield/ha while‘BACapso’had the highest Mid Parent(MP)heterosis in the same *** general(GCA)and specific(SCA)combining ability variances were obtained in all the traits implying that both the additive and non-additive gene effects operated in the genetic expression of the *** magnitude of GCA and SCA variances indicated preponderance of additive gene action for all the traits.‘Beit Alpha’and‘Straight 8’are best general combiners while‘BACapso’and‘CapsoStrght 8’were the best specific combiners for total fruit yield.

The main objective of this study was to examine post1991Ethiopian trade relationswith China, the main focus being on achievements, challenges and *** needs China for economic cooperation including trade relation. it cannot allin all depend on the western countries. China’s development experience is generallyconsidered as a role model for Ethiopia to adopt. Moreover, China supports Ethiopiaon different economic issues like aid and soft loan. On the other hand, there are alsoseveral factors pushing China to look towards Ethiopia especially in terms ofEthiopia’s strategic importance and market potential. After the critical analysis oftrade data between Ethiopia and China, this paper empirically proved that Ethiopiaincurs huge deficit in its trade balance with China in the period *** result from cross sectional data sources, i.e. secondary sources, and officialreports, reveal that Ethiopia’s export to China is much less than its imports fromChina. Although trade figures show that there are improvements in the Ethiopia’sexport, the trade balance is still largely in favor of China. Dependence on the exportof few unprocessed agricultural products, weak export performance and geographicfactors are among the reasons for the Ethiopia’s trade deficit. The researcher also provides practical policy recommendations such as: preferentialtreatment to be fully exploited by Ethiopia;leveraging China’s investment in SpecialEconomic Zones;encouraging joint venture between Chinese and Ethiopian firmsamong others.

Objective:To investigate the ameliorative role of Tetrapleura tetraplera(Schum and Thonn)Taub(***)leaf in hyperglycemia with associated conditions like oxidative stress,kidney damage and disorders in lipid ***:Five groups of five rats each intraperitoneally received the following treatment schedules for 7 d:untreated normal control,untreated alloxan-diabetic control,diabetic treated with glibenclamide,normal rats treated with extract(50 mg/kg)and diabetic rats treated with the *** were made for fasting blood sugar,body weight changes,malondialdehyde,aspartate aminotransferase,alanine aminotransferase,bilirubin,superoxide dismutase,catalase,lipid profile,packed cell volume,hemoglobin,urea and creatinine in all the ***:Whereas the untreated diabetic rats showed a significant decrease(Pin packed cell volume,superoxide dismutase,catalase and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol with a concomitant increase in the levels of malondialdehyde,fasting blood sugar,aspartate aminotransferase,alanine aminotransferase,bilirubin,urea and creatinine,administration of methanolic extract of *** leaf or glibenclamide alleviated these altered parameters in the treated ***:Methanolic extract of *** leaves possesses a potent capacity for treatment of diabetes and the accompanying complications,including oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia.

Semen from 10 932 male partners of infertile couples was analysed and sperm parameter trends were evaluated at the Reproduction Biology Laboratory of the University Hospital of Marseille （France） between 1988 and 2007. After 3-6 days of abstinence, semen samples were collected. Measurements of seminal fluid volume, pH, sperm concentration, total sperm count, motility and detailed morphology of spermatozoa were performed. Sperm parameters were analysed on the entire population and in men with normal total numeration （〉~ 40 million per ejaculate）. The whole population demonstrated declining trends in sperm concentration （1.5% per year）, total sperm count （1.6% per year）, total motility （0.4% per year）, rapid motility （5.5% per year） and normal morphology （2.2% per year）. in the group of selected samples with total normal sperm count, the same trends of sperm quality deterioration with time were observed. Our results clearly indicate that the auality of semen decreased in this population over the study period.

Considering the injurious effects of hypohydration, a study on the water consumption pattern of young adult in a specified higher institution in Adamawa State was sought due to concerns on the low plain water consumption with the objectives of understanding the average daily consumption, as well as knowing contributors to total body fluid intake. A qualitative cross sectional sweep survey (CSSS) using simple random sampling (SRS) method was carried out, a pilot sturdy which achieved a cronback alpha of >0.7 reliability questionnaire was used to carry, while Conchrans formula was adopted to determine sample size N, which was 400. The result showed that majority of the respondents 176(44) were 21 years of age in their early adulthood, many, 187(46.75) used borehole water as their source of household water. Most of the respondents 272(69) agreed to drinking rain water. Some respondents 200(50) choose pure satchet water as their major source of drinking water, about half 200(50) of the respondents drink 1.5 L or less of water daily, while only 13(3.25) of the respondents drink 5 - 6 L/day of water, on the average. Most of the respondents 174(43.3) take orange as their most commonly consumed fruit, taking a maximum of 4 oranges per day, 160(40) of the respondents eat apple as their most commonly consumed fruit, with a maximum of one apple a day both applesily:Verdana;"> and oranges give 87% fluid of their total weight. in this paper we present a comparative study between PYTHiA, EPOS, QGSJET, and SiBYLL generators. The global event observables considered are the charged energy flow, charged particle distributions, charged hadron production ratios and V^0 ratios. The study is performed in the LHCb and TOTEM fiducial phase spaces on minimum bias simulated data samples for pp collisions at = 7 TeV , using the reference measurements from these experiments. in the majority of cases, the measurements are within a band defined by the most extreme predictions. The observed differences between the predictions and the measurements seem to be, in most part, caused by extrapolation from the central pseudorapidity region (|η| 2.5), in which the generators were mainly tuned.

i>Cronobacter sakazakiii> is an emerging ubiquitous and opportunistic pathogen that currently contaminates a wide spectrum of foods including powdered milk and poses a lethal threat to neonates, the elderly and persons with immune deficiencies. They cause life threatening neonatal meningitis, septicemia, and necrotizing enterocolitis. A total of 360 samples of powdered infant formula were collected from postnatal hospital attendees reconstituting the PIF for their children in the North Central region of Nigeria where cases of infant mortality are very high and presenting as enterocolitis and diarrhea. Pre-enriched samples were cultured in chromogenic i>Cronobacteri> broth and were then further sub-cultured into a chromogenic i>Cronobacter sakazakiii> agar. They were positive, exhibiting yellowish cultures typical of i>Cronobacter sakazakiii>. Biochemical tests of the isolates were also carried out and indicated the presence of i>Cronobacter sakazakiii>. Maize is an important economic crop grown in Nigeria. its production is dramatically affect by the pink stem borer--Sesamia caiamistis （Hampson, Noctuidae） and sugarcane borer--Eldana saccharina （Walker, Pyralidae） that are endemic in Southeastern Nigeria. in areas of stress, existing genotypes may marginally do well due to their inherent capabilities. Therefore, it is possible to find useful genes in such areas of stress, since such genes have been responsible for the survival of host crops over the years. Evaluation study was conducted for a range of agronomic characteristics and resistance attributes for 209 local maize collections from Southeastern Nigeria along with three improved check varieties. Field trials were conducted at three locations in a total of four environments in 2001. Highly significant genotypic variances as were noted in all the traits, are indicative of the magnitude of variation that exists among the genotypes, thus providing the opportunity of selection for desirable traits. Furthermore, four traits, namely, leaf feeding, ear damage, stalk lodging and yield were used from across the environments to construct a rank summation index （RSi）, which was used to rank the entries for resistance to stem borers. This RSi led to the identification of 11 genotypes which represents the best 5% of the 212 genotypes in resistance ability. Genotype AMA TZBR-WC1 （from international institute of Tropical Agriculture （iiTA）, ibadan） had the best overall resistance levels, followed by genotypes SE NG-77 and SE NG-67 （from Umuahia North）, SE NG-62 （from ikwuano）, SE NG-148 （from Ukwa West）, SE NG-106 （from Bende）, SE NG-119 （from isiala Ngwa）, SE NG-33 （from ikwuano） and SE NG-65 （from Umuahia North）.
