The Effect of Simulation-Based Training on Nursing Students’ Communication Skill, Self-Efficacy and Clinical Competence for Nursing Practice

Background: Simulation-based training is a new strategy in teaching that gives the students good opportunities to learn and apply what they learn in nursing care safely. Aim: This study conducted to evaluate the effects of simulation-based training on nursing students’ communication skill, self-efficacy and clinical competence in practice. Subjects and Methods: Quiz-experimental design was used in this study (pre-posttest intervention), it was carried out on 100 nursing students first semester in 2019 using low and high-fidelity simulators. This study was carried out at College of Applied Medical Sciences-Bshia University. Data Collection: demographic data, communication skill, self-efficacy and clinical competence questionnaires. Analysis is done by SPSS version 20 software. Results: Participants who received the simulation-based training, showed statistical significant improvement in communication skill, self-efficacy, and clinical competence scores after participation in the simulation program (t = −32.64, p = 0.001;t = −19.9, p = 0.001;16.4, p = 0.001). Also, there are significant relation between gender and clinical competency (t = 2.768, p Conclusion: Simulation-based training in medical courses is effective in enhancing communication skill, self-efficacy and clinical competence. Multiple-patient simulations as a teaching-learning strategy in the nursing curriculum are highly recommended.

A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study to Assess the Perception and Knowledge of Staff Nurses regarding Physical Restrains

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions and knowledge regarding physical restraint used among registered nurses (RNs) and nursing assistants (NAs). Method and Sample: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. A convenient sample was recruited from nursing staff from Palestinian and Saudi Hospitals. Perceptions of Restraint Use Questionnaire (PRUQ) were used [1]. Results: A total of 144 nursing staffs were included. Physical restraint use was perceived as more important in some circumstances than others. in the critical care unit/iCU, the most important perceived reason for physical restraint use was protecting from falling out of bed and preventing removing dressing. There were significant differences of overall score for the PRUQ among all nursing staff according to hospital, t (142) = 8.74, P = 0.001. The mean of Saudi Arabia hospitals group (M = 4.56) was higher than the mean of Palestinian hospital group (M = 3.67). At the same time, there were significant differences of overall score for the PRUQ among all nursing staff according to specialized education in geriatrics, t (40) = 3.60, P = 0.001. The mean of no specialized education in geriatrics group (M = 4.13) was higher than the mean of yes specialized education in geriatrics group (M = 3.69). Conclusion and implications: Nursing staff showed positive attitudes towards restrains application with difference between Palestinian and Saudi Arabian nurses. Proper implementation and good awareness of the complications are prerequisite for application of physical restrains for patients.

Midwives and Nurses Compliance with Standard Precautions in Palestinian Hospitals

Midwives and nurses should use the standard precautions as the basic level of infection control precautions when delivering care to all patients, regardless of their presumed infection status. Therefore midwifes and nurses should have sound knowledge and compliance with standard precaution. Aim of the study: The study aimed to assess the level of the compliance of standard precautions among the midwives and nurses in the Palestinian Hospitals. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted from May to June 2015 on 81 midwives and nurses from Palestinian hospitals. The data were collected from labor rooms and postpartum departments of Palestinian hospitals. Data were collected using pretested questionnaire on 81 midwives and nurses selected by convenience sample. Results: The current study showed that the average of standard precautions knowledge level and compliance are 74.6% and 83.8% respectively. There are an association between age, education, work experience, and compliance with standard precautions at p p ion: The midwives and nurses in the current study for both knowledge and compliance have high level regarding standard precautions. There is an association between age, education, work experience, and compliance with standard precautions. Recommendations: Knowledge of midwives and nurses should be updated;the importance of latest evidence-based practices of infection control in continuing education/training program should be emphasized;and training programs for newly midwives and nurses about standard precaution and at regular intervals should be provided.

Nurse’s Perception of Barriers to Research Utilization in Hospitals;Comparative Descriptive Study

Background: Although the number of studies on research utilization is steadily growing, but still there is a strong need to identify the main causes that inhibit the use of research findings in the clinical setting. Aim of the Study: To assess nurse’s perception of barriers to research utilization in Saudi Arabia and Palestine Hospitals. This study focuses on medical and surgical nurses in private hospitals. Method: A convenient sample of 156 medical nurses, from 6 general private hospitals, 3 from north Palestine and 3 from Ri.adh City (KSA). Results: Out of 180 nurses employed from private hospitals, a total of 156 questionnaires were returned (response rate 86.67%). Results in a final sample size for analysis of 156. The demographic characteristics, age, gender, hospital, role on health care team, clinical experience, marital status, education degree, and current certified in a special area of respondents are shown in Table 1. Their mean age was 29.41, about half of them below 6-year clinical experience 77 (49.4%). Although around 90 (57.7%) of the participants from Palestine hospitals and 66 (42.3%) from Saudi Arabia hospitals, almost half of them their education (diploma) 85 (54.5%). in addition, 114 (73.1%) were female, 85 (54.5%) have current certified in a special area, and 140 (89.7%) respondents worked as staff nurses. Regarding perceptions of barriers to research utilization, the results of the barriers show in the total scale a mean of 3.15 out of 5 f (SD = 0.55;95% Ci 3.05 to 3.23). The subscales of setting and research were the highest one (mean = 3.22, SD = (0.63), and the lowest one is “nurse” (mean = 2.95, SD = 0.75). Conclusions: The main barriers of research utilization in practice for nurse are nurses themselves, the setting in the hospitals and research in its process and findings.
