Enhanced in-vitro degradation resistance and cytocompatibility of a thermomechanically processed novel Mg alloy:insights into the role of microstructural attributes

The role of microstructural features on in-vitro degradation and surface film development of a thermomechanically processed Mg-4Zn-0.5Ca-0.8Mn alloy has been investigated employing electrochemical studies,scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron *** specimen forged at 523 K temperature developed a coarse unimodal microstructure consisting of basal oriented grains,whereas the specimens forged at 623 K and 723 K temperatures exhibited bimodal microstructures containing randomly oriented fine grains and basal oriented coarse *** bimodal microstructures exerted higher resistance to corrosion compared to the unimodal microstructure in presence of a protective surface *** optimum size distribution of fine and coarse grains as well as the prevalence of basal oriented grains led to the lowest anodic current density in the specimen forged at 623 *** morphology of Ca_(2)Mg_(6)Zn_(3)precipitates governed the cathodic kinetics by controlling the anode to cathode surface area *** the specimen forged at 723 K comprised comparatively lower fraction of precipitates than at 623 K,the mesh-like precipitate morphology increased the effective cathodic surface area,leading to enhanced localised corrosion in the former *** microstructural features developed at 623 K forging temperature formed a well-protective surface film with lower Mg(OH)_(2)to MgO ratio,exhibiting distinctly high polarization resistance and superior cytocompatibility in terms of cell-proliferation and cell-differentiation.

Mg and its alloys are drawing huge attention since the last two decades as a viable option for temporary implants applications.A commendable progress has already been made in the development of these *** biodegradable nature of Mg,appreciable biocompatibility of elemental Mg,and its close resemblance to natural bone in terms of density and elastic modulus make them highly preferable option amongst other available alternatives in this *** review article presents an overview covering the recent advancements made in the field of Mg-based biodegradable implants for orthopaedic implant *** paper focuses on alloy development and fabrication techniques,the state of the art of important Mg-based alloy systems in terms of their mechanical properties,in-vitro and in-vivo degradation behaviour and ***,the paper reviews the current progress achieved in the clinical transition of Mg-based alloys for orthopaedic *** review also includes the degradation mechanisms of the alloys in physiological environment and highlights the mismatch existing between the rate of bone healing and alloy degradation due to rapid corrosion of the alloys in such environment,which has still restricted their widespread ***,the surface coating techniques available for the alloys as an effective way to reduce the degradation rate are reviewed,followed by a discussion on the future research prospects.

influence of second phase precipitates on mechanical and in-vitro corrosion behaviour of Mg-4Zn-0.5Ca-0.8Mn alloy in optimum homogenized conditions

The present study investigates the mechanical and in-vitro corrosion behavior of Mg-4Zn-0.5Ca-0.8Mn alloy in optimum homogenized *** optimization of the homogenization parameters has been carried out employing thermodynamic calculations and kinetic *** model utilizes the inter-diffusivity of the solute elements and predicts that∼6–24 h of homogenization at 633 K effectively redistributes the elements in the Mg *** on the insights obtained from the simulations,the as-cast Mg-4Zn-0.5Ca-0.8Mn alloy was subjected to homogenization heat treatment process for 6–*** microstructural study through optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)revealed that the interconnected network of second phase precipitates substantially dissolve within 24 h,implying adequate ***,fine Mg-Zn based precipitates with varied morphology and phase fractions also evolved during homogenization treatment,as confirmed through SEM and transmission electron *** the 12 h homogenized specimen,the highest fraction of uniformly dispersed fine precipitates resulted in the highest strength(∼225 Mpa).On the other hand,a substantial disruption in coarse precipitate network and lower aspect ratio of fine Mg-Zn precipitates led to the highest ductility(∼8%)in this *** the 24 h homogenized specimen,the ductility reduced marginally owing to higher aspect ratio of fine *** immersion and electrochemical tests(viz.,potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy)carried out in Hank’s solution revealed that the 24 h homogenized specimen exhibits the best corrosion *** least fraction of Ca_(2)Mg_(6)Zn_(3)phase with maximum disruption in interconnectivity,in combination with a small fraction of fine equilibrium MgZn_(2)precipitates,resulted in suppression of localized corrosion in this *** promotes the formation of the most stable and compact product layer over the specimen,result

Combustion characteristics of high ash indian thermal,heat affected coal and their blends

Onsite mine fire generates large volumes of heat-affected coal in Jharia coalfields,*** utilization of such heat-affected coal in thermal utilities is not feasible as such coal does not have the desirable volatile matter required for *** the present work,experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the possible utilization of such heat-affected coal in thermal utilities by blending with other ***-affected coal(31%ash and 5300 kcal/kg GCV)collected from Jharia coalfield were blended with thermal coal(28%ash and 5650 kcal/kg GCV)in different ratios of 90:10,80:20,70:30 and 60:40 to identify the desirable blend ratio for burning of blended coal in thermal *** characteristics of all the coals were carried out using *** combustion parameters such as ignition temperature,peak temperature,burnout temperature,ignition index,burnout index,combustion performance index,rate and heat intensity index of the combustion process and activation energy were evaluated to analyse the combustion *** and theoretical analysis shows the blend ratio of 90:10 can be used in place of only thermal coal in utilities to reduce the fuel cost.

Effect of weathering on physico-chemical properties and combustion behavior of an indian thermal coal

An open air stockpile of conical shape was formed with 3.5 m base diameter and 5 m height using 500 tons of -200 mm size ROM thermal coal on a concrete floor. Coal sample from the stockpile were collected at 30 days interval for analysis of various chemical properties like;proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, gross calorific value (GCV) and various combustion related properties such as ignition temperature, peak temperature, burnout temperature, maximum combustion rate, ignition index, burnout index, combustion performance index and combustion rate intensity index. Experimental results show that, due to weathering of coal fixed carbon decreased from 35.6% to 19.9%, elemental carb on (C) decreased from 46.6% to 28.6%, hydrogen (H) decreased from 3.3% to 2.9% and GCV decreased by up to 55% of original value during 330 days of storage of coal in an open atmosphere. Ash con tent of coal increased form 29.2% to 46.6% due to loss of combustibles. Sulfur (S) of coal was found to get increased from 0.33% to 1.08% during storage. The activation energy of coal combustion increased from 22 kJ/mol to 54 kJ/mol. Variation in combustion parameters signifies that weathering has significant negative impact on coal combustion properties as coal become difficult to ignite.

Relationship between proximate analysis parameters and combustion behaviour of high ash indian coal

This work presents the analysis of combustion characteristics of high ash indian coal(28%-40%)collected from different mines of Singaurali coalfield,*** the coal samples were characterized by proximate and gross calorific value *** performance of the coals were characterised using thermo-gravimetric analysis to identify the burning profile of individual *** combustion kinetic parameters such as ignition temperature,peak temperature and burnout temperature,ignition index and burnout index,combustion performance index plus rate and intensity index of combustion process,activation energy were determined to analyse the combustion behaviour of *** all these combustion properties were compared with the volatile matter,ash,fixed carbon and fuel ratio of each *** analysis shows that with increase in ash content,combustion performance initially increases and later ***,coal with(25±1.75)%volatile matter,20%-35%ash and fuel ratio 1.4-1.5 were found to be optimum for coal combustion.

pediatric lupus nephritis: Management update

Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus(c SLE) is a severe multisystem autoimmune disease. Renal involvement occurs in the majority of c SLE patients and is often fatal. Renal biopsy is an important investigation in the management of lupus nephritis. Treatment of renal lupus consists of an induction phase and maintenance phase. Treatment of childhood lupus nephritis using steroids is associated with poor outcome and excess side-effects. The addition of cyclophosphamide to the treatment schedule has improved disease control. in view of treatment failure using these drugs and a tendency for non-adherence, many newer agents such as immune-modulators and monoclonal antibodies are being tried in patients with c SLE. Trials of these novel agents in the pediatric population are still lacking making a consensus in the management protocol of pediatric lupus nephritis difficult.
