Rare events such as nucleation processes are of ubiquitous importance in real *** most popular method for nonequilibrium systems,forward flux sampling(FFS),samples rare events by using interfaces to partition the whole transition process into sequence of steps along an order parameter connecting the initial and final *** usually suffers from two main difficulties:low computational efficiency due to bad interface locations and even being not applicable when trapping into unknown intermediate metastable *** the present work,we propose an approach to overcome these difficulties,by self-adaptively locating the interfaces on the fly in an optimized *** to the conventional FFS which set the interfaces with equal distance of the order parameter,our approach determines the interfaces with equal transition probability which is shown to satisfy the optimization *** is done by firstly running long local trajectories starting from the current interface i to get the conditional probability distribution Pc(>i|i),and then determining i+1by equaling Pc(i+1|i)to a give value *** these optimized interfaces,FFS can be run in a much more efficient *** addition,our approach can conveniently find the intermediate metastable states by monitoring some special long trajectories that neither end at the initial state nor reach the next interface,the number of which will increase sharply from zero if such metastable states are *** apply our approach to a two-state model system and a two-dimensional lattice gas Ising *** approach is shown to be much more efficient than the conventional FFS method without losing accuracy,and it can also well reproduce the two-step nucleation scenario of the Ising model with easy identification of the intermediate metastable state.

Low-dimensional materials have excellent properties which are closely related to their ***,the growth mechanism underlying tunable dimensionality from 2D triangles to 1D ribbons of such materials is still ***,we establish a general kinetic Monte Carlo model for transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) growth to address such an *** model is able to reproduce several key findings in experiments,and reveals that the dimensionality is determined by the lattice mismatch and the interaction strength between TMDs and the *** predict that the dimensionality can be well tuned by the interaction strength and the geometry of the *** work deepens the understanding of tunable dimensionality of low-dimensional materials and may inspire new concepts for the design of such materials with expected dimensionality.

Investigation of gene expression profiles in coronary heart disease and functional analysis of target gene

The research outlined here includes constitution of the differential gene expression profile by means of oligonucleotide gene microarray and functional analysis of the target gene for coronary heart disease (CHD). In a microarray screening experiment, the predominance of inflammation- and immune-related genes is presented in the expression profile of 107 differential genes based on the analysis of gene ontology and gene pathway. IL-8, an inflammatory factor, is identified as one of the genes that were markedly up-regulated in CHD. The plasma level of IL-8 is significantly raised in patients with CHD (n = 30) compared with healthy controls (n = 40), which underscores the clinical relevance of the in vitro finding. The further functional analysis shows that IL-8 affects platelet aggregation percentage, ex-pression of CD62p and platelet aggregation morphology in 12 healthy volunteers to some extent. These findings suggest the relevance of inflammation and immune responses to CHD at the DNA level. Moreover, IL-8 may be involved in the pathogenesis of CHD through the pathway of platelet activation.

Differential gene expression profile in ischemic myo-cardium of Wistar rats with acute myocardial infarction

To determine the differential genes in ischemic myocardium of Wistar rats with acute myocardial in- farction (AMI), we constructed two differential gene expression profiles. AMI model was generated by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in Wistar rats. Total RNA was extracted from the normal and the ischemic heart tissues under the ligation point at the 8th day after the operation. Dif- ferential gene expression profiles of the two samples were constructed by using long serial analysis of gene expression (LongSAGE). Real time fluorescence quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) was used to confirm the expression changes of partial target genes. The main results were as follows: a total of 15966 tags were screened from the normal and the ischemic LongSAGE maps, and 9646 tags in the normal tissue and 9563 tags in the ischemic tissue were obtained. Among them, 7665 novel tags were identified by NCBI BLAST search. In the ischemic tissue, 142 genes significantly changed compared to those in the normal tissue (P<0.05). These differentially expressed genes may play important roles in the pathways of oxidation and phosphorylation, ATP synthesis and glycolysis and so on. Partial genes identified by the LongSAGE were confirmed by Q-PCR. The results show that AMI causes a series of gene expres- sion changes in the regulation of the pathways related to energy metabolism.

Grain filling is a crucial process that affects yield in rice(Oryza sativa L.).Auxin biosynthesis and signaling are closely related to rice yield;therefore,it is important to understand the effects of auxin biosynthesis on rice grain filling to improve crop *** this study,we used physiological and molecular strategies to identify the roles of auxin in rice grain *** application of auxin(IAA)or auxin analogues(2,4-D)to young spikelets and flag leaves improved the seed-setting rate and yield per ***,real-time quantitative PCR assays confirmed that nine members of the OsYUCCA family of auxin biosynthetic genes were upregulated during grain filling,implication that auxin biosynthesis plays a major role in grain *** specific expression of either Arabidopsis AtYUCCA1 or OsYUCCA2 in the endosperm or leaves resulted in increased expression of OsIAA genes and auxin content of seeds,as well as increased grain filling and seed-setting *** result establishes that the auxin content in grains and leaves is important for grain *** findings further highlight the potential applications for improving rice yield by elevating targeted gene expression in specific tissues.

Using the nine-level Atmospheric General Circulation Model developed at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP9L-AGCM) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 30-year extraseasonal short-term ensemble hincast of winter climate is performed, with integrations starting from annual autumn during 1969—1998. Winter climate predictability over China is then evaluated for the first time. It follows that the predictability is higher in tropics than in extratropics. Also, it is higher over ocean compared with land, especially for surface air temperature. With height increasing in troposphere, the predictability of geopotential height slightly changes zonally, but for weakening of band-ship distribution and dropping near the date line. Of all analyzed variables, the prediction skill of air temperature and geopotential height (precipitation) is the highest (smallest). In addition, the predictability of winter climate over China and even East Asia enhances obviously during ENSO cycle, especially during La Nia phase. Simulation comparison against verifying analysis for surface temperature anomaly exhibits the model抯 skill in predicting surface temperature抯 interannual variation trend in winter.

Seventy-two type II diabetic subjects were given Konjac food for 65 days. The data analyzed by multiple F test indicate that the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and the 2-h postprandial blood glucose (PBG) on the 30th and the 65th days after the food was ingested were significantly reduced (P = 0.001, P 200 mg% decreased on the average by 51.8 and 84.6 mg%. respectively; those with FBG-0 150-200 mg% decreased by 24.1 and 68.7 mg%; and those with FBG-O 200 mg%) significantly decreased by 118.7 mg%. It was concluded that Konjac food is very useful in the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia. (C)1990 Academic Press. Inc.
