Rigid ureteroscopy in prone split-leg position for fragmentation of female ureteral stones:A case report

BACKGROUND Ureteroscopy is widely used in the treatment of ureteral stones due to the increased morbidity of turolithiasis.This is the first report of a case of ureteral calculi treated with rigid ureteroscopy in the modified prone split-leg position.CASE SUMMARY A 62-year-old Asian woman was diagnosed with a ureteral stone and underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy twice.However,the abdominal computer tomography scan showed persistent calculi on the right lower ureter.Her left hip movement was limited because of a left femoral neck fracture that did not receive proper treatment in a timely manner.She was unable to undergo surgery in the lithotomy position and refused to accept flexible ureteroscopy treatment.Therefore,rigid ureteroscopy was performed with her in the modified prone split-leg position.The ureteral calculi were successfully fragmented.CONCLUSION It is feasible to treat lower ureteral calculi in women in the prone split-leg position with the implementation of rigid ureteroscopy.

The pyrolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET)/poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT)catalyzed by five alkaline earth metal-based minerals/wastes,namely calcined dolomite,calcite,magnesite,calcium carbide slag(CCS),and ophicalcitum,was conducted by a pyrolyzer-gas chromatography-mass spectrometer(Py-GC-MS)with the objective of recovering benzenes-enriched oil.Compared with magnesium-based catalysts and pure CaO,the calcium-based catalysts with calcium hydroxide as the main component performed better catalytic effect,which could simultaneously promote the hydrolysis of ester products and the decarboxylation of aromatic acids after hydrolysis.For PET,the addition of solid base catalysts at 600℃promoted the complete degradation of aromatic acids and aryl esters,which accounted for 32.6%and 30.7%of the pyrolysis oil,respectively.The content of benzene in oil increased from 8.8%to 31.7%–78.8%.For PBT,the addition of solid base catalysts at 600℃completely decomposed the aromatic acids,which accounted for 67.1%of the pyrolysis oil,and the content of benzene in oil increased from 12.3%to 34.5%–81.0%.During the deoxygenation of polyester pyrolysis products,increasing temperature was more effective for the decomposition/conversion of acetone and tetrahydrofuran,while increasing the alkalinity of the reaction environment contributed to the rapid decrease in acetaldehyde and aryl ketone contents.

As a defense mechanism against transposable elements,the PIWI-interacting RNA(piRNA)pathway maintains genomic integrity and ensures proper gametogenesis in gonads.Numerous factors are orchestrated to ensure normal operation of the piRNA pathway.Spindle-E(Spn-E)gene was one of the first genes shown to participate in the piRNA pathway.In this study,we performed functional analysis of Spn-E in the model lepidopteran insect,Bombyx mori.Unlike the germline-specific expression pattern observed in Drosophila and mouse,BmSpn-E was ubiquitously expressed in all tissues tested,and it was highly expressed in gonads.Immunofluorescent staining showed that BmSpn-E was localized in both germ cells and somatic cells in ovary and was expressed in spermatocytes in testis.We used a binary transgenic CRISPR/Cas9 system to construct BmSpn-E mutants.Loss of BmSpn-E expression caused derepression of transposons in gonads.We also found that mutant gonads were much smaller than wild-type gonads and that the number of germ cells was considerably lower in mutant gonads.Quantitative real-time PCR analysis and TUNEL staining revealed that apoptosis was greatly enhanced in mutant gonads.Further,we found that the BmSpn-E mutation impacted gonadal development and gametogenesis at the early larval stage.In summary,our data provided the first evidence that BmSpn-E plays vital roles in gonadal development and gametogenesis in B.mori.

Predicting Hurricane Evacuation Decisions with Interpretable Machine Learning Methods

Facing the escalating effects of climate change,it is critical to improve the prediction and understanding of the hurricane evacuation decisions made by households in order to enhance emergency management.Current studies in this area often have relied on psychology-driven linear models,which frequently exhibited limitations in practice.The present study proposed a novel interpretable machine learning approach to predict household-level evacuation decisions by leveraging easily accessible demographic and resource-related predictors,compared to existing models that mainly rely on psychological factors.An enhanced logistic regression model(that is,an interpretable machine learning approach) was developed for accurate predictions by automatically accounting for nonlinearities and interactions(that is,univariate and bivariate threshold effects).Specifically,nonlinearity and interaction detection were enabled by low-depth decision trees,which offer transparent model structure and robustness.A survey dataset collected in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita,two of the most intense tropical storms of the last two decades,was employed to test the new methodology.The findings show that,when predicting the households’ evacuation decisions,the enhanced logistic regression model outperformed previous linear models in terms of both model fit and predictive capability.This outcome suggests that our proposed methodology could provide a new tool and framework for emergency management authorities to improve the prediction of evacuation traffic demands in a timely and accurate manner.

The use of supercritical CO2 for shale gas extraction is a promising new technology.This paper explores current research into this process,looking at analysis of the mechanism of CH4 displacement in nanoporous shale,the positive and negative effects accompanying its use for sequestration as well as organic extraction,the migration of elements and the swelling process,and the macro and micro control mechanisms involved in permeability enhancement in reservoirs.Fruitful directions for future research are also considered through comparison with hydraulic fracturing.The research findings indicate that ScCO2 fluid replacement can be used to increase gas production and seal up greenhouse gases as an effective,clean and safe method of shale gas exploitation.It is particularly effective for promoting the desorption of CH4 in shale reservoirs that have developed fine neck-wide body pores,and the subtle structural changes effected by ScCO2 fluid in sensitive minerals in reservoirs with a high brittle mineral content also have a positive effect on permeability and storage capacity.The adsorption process has been characterized as consisting of three stages:short-term shrinkage,slow swelling,and stability;an expansion equation has been proposed for CO2/CH4 that incorporates competitive adsorption,collision desorption,and impingement re-adsorption.ScCO2 fracturing has been found to be more effective than hydraulic fracturing for dense reservoirs and more effective at linking up pore-micro-fissure-fracture systems.

Dislocation source-limited hardening and ductilization is an effective strategy to obtain superior strength-ductility synergy in some engineering structural metals. Recent works demonstrated that the synergy could be enhanced by grain-size reduction. However, the mechanism of grain-size dependence is still a mystery. In this work, bulk pure Ni produced by electrodeposition and subsequent annealing, with grain sizes ranging from ∼20 nm to ∼20 µm, were methodically investigated to unravel the mechanism of the grain-size effect on dislocation source-limited hardening and ductilization. The high-density nano-twinning in the as-electrodeposited nanograined specimens exhibited better thermodynamic stability than the peers with random high-angle grain boundaries, leading to fine recrystallized grains with low-density dislocations. The low dislocation density enabled extra hardening beyond grain boundary strengthening via yield-point behavior with grain sizes ranging from ∼110 nm to ∼10 µm and extra ductilization over ∼500 nm. This work demonstrated that the prerequisite for dislocation source-limited hardening was that the dislocation density of the specimen should be lower than the size-dependent critical value of ((1.1 × 107 /d ) m^(–2), d is the grain size in unit of the meter) where a transition from forest-dominated hardening to dislocation source-limited hardening could occur. On the other hand, dislocation source-limited ductilization only worked when the grain size was comparable to/larger than the theoretical dislocation mean slip distance. Dislocation source-limited ductilization resulted from more room in grains for accumulation of dislocations and deformation nano-stacking faults enabling the higher work hardening rate. This work offered an altogether new avenue to obtain stronger and more ductile metallic materials through utilizing grain-size dependent dislocation source-limited hardening and ductilization.

Most detectors for nuclear physics experiments are detector arrays composed of numerous units.Testing each detector unit is a major part of the research work on detector arrays.To save time and simplify the research process,a ROOT-based detector test system was designed for detector unit testing.The test system is a general pur-pose and expandable software system that can support most of the hardware devices in the market.Users can easily build a complete detector test system using the required hardware devices.The software is based on the ROOT framework and is operated on the Linux platform.The software of the test system consists of four parts:the controller,data acquisition(DAQ),high-voltage power supply,and online monitoring and analysis.In addition,a user-friendly graphical user interface(GUI)was designed for user convenience.Moreover,the online analysis func-tion of the software can implement automatic peak searching and spectrum fitting for different radioactive sources,and the results under different conditions can be shown automatically.The completion of the test system could greatly simplify the development process of the detector.

Performance Analysis for Mobility Management of Dual Connectivity in HetNet

Dual connectivity(DC)is regarded as a promising technology to increase users’throughput,provide radio link robustness,and improve load-balancing among base stations(BSs).However,since the introduction of DC makes the mobility of network more complex and diversified,especially the mobility management of heterogeneous networks(HetNets)based on DC faces great challenges.Taking event-A3-based measurement report as the trigger condition for handover(HO),this paper compares and evaluates the influences of HO of master nodes(MNs)and secondary nodes(SNs)on link reliability in different bearing modes.Particularly,hybrid automatic repeat request(HARQ),throughput,channel quality indicators(CQIs),and data packets queuing time are taken as link reliability analysis indicators.Besides,we study how DC utilizes the traffic split ratio between MNs and SNs to maximize the superiority of throughput.Simulation results show that DC can effectively reduce the impact of HO on the number of HARQ and increase the throughput of users.When the data traffic is tilted to the secondary nodes,the superiority of throughput is more obvious.

To explore the effectiveness and safety of a Chinese medicinal decoction Wuwei Xiaodu Drink(WWXDD)in inhibiting chronic osteomyelitis via regulatory T cells signaling.The effective constitutes of WWXDD and osteomyelitis related genes were screened.Target proteins were cross-validated using the Venny database.GO function and KEGG pathway analysis were performed for target proteins,while pharmacological network was constructed.The bone properties were analyzed by HE staining and the concentrations of immune factors were measured by ELISA.The expression of CTLA-4 and Foxp3 mRNA and STAT5,p-STAT5,CTLA-4 and Foxp3 protein were detected using Real-time PCR and Western blot,respectively.FACS was used to analyze the percentages of cells.A total of 117 genes overlapped between 785 target genes of the active compounds of WWXDD and 912 osteomyelitis related genes.Inflammation-related genes,including IL-6,TNFα,IL-1βand IL-2 showed high connection degree in the drug-compound-disease-target network.GO function and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that 117 intersection genes mainly enriched in virus infection related pathways,immune related pathways and chemokine signaling pathway.Furthermore,the development of chronic osteomyelitis was suppressed in model rats after treatment with WWXDD.Meanwhile,the concentrations of IL-2 and CD4^(+)CD25^(+)Foxp3 Treg perr centages together with the levels of p-STAT5,CTLA-4 and Foxp3 were also down-regulated.Furthermore,IL-2 and WWXDD drug-containing serum exhibited opposite effects on regulating IL-2,IL-10,TGF-β1,Foxp3,CTLA4 and STAT5.In addition,a STAT5 phosphorylation inhibitor suppressed the expression of Foxp3 and CTLA-4.WWXDD can treat chronic osteomyelitis through suppressing the main regulating factors of Tregs and interfere its immunodepression.Our results bring a new solution for chronic osteomyelitis.
