Dear Editor,Respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)is the leading cause of serious lower respiratory tract disease in children under 5 years of age worldwide,causing an estimated 3.2 million hospitalizations and 120,000 deaths in children globally per ***,nearly all children can be infected with RSV by 2 years of age,and individuals can be repeatedly re-infected with RSV throughout life,which poses great threats to infants,the elderly.

Natural products(NPs), including traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), have been long and widely used in the prevention and treatment of central nervous system(CNS) diseases by virtue of their abundant sources, diverse structures, and novel *** this review article, we intend to summarize and discuss the situation or status of the clinical employments or trials of the NPs and their derivatives with CNS activities. NPs that have been extensively studied in preclinical research in recent years are also included. The compounds presented in this review are classified according to their indications and followed by details such as natural sources, possible biological mechanisms, and development status, while a considerable proportion of them are found in TCM. In addition, some drug combinations with synergistic effects are also mentioned. According to their impressive therapeutic effects and novel chemical structures, NPs are not only effective therapeutic remedies in clinic, but also lead compounds for structural modification, which indicate that nature brings new avenues to the therapy of CNS diseases.

Temporal trend of mortality from major cancers in Xuanwei, China

Although a number of studies have examined the etiology of lung cancer in Xuanwei County, China, other types of cancer in this county have not been reported systematically. This study aimed to investigate the temporal trend of eight major cancers in Xuanwei County using data from three mortality surveys （1973-1975, 1990-1992, and 2004-2005）. The Chinese population in 1990 was used as a standard population to calculate age- standardized mortality rates. Cancers of lung, liver, breast, brain, esophagus, leukemia, rectum, and stomach were identified as the leading cancers in this county in terms of mortality rate. During the three time periods, lung cancer remained as the most common type of cancer. The mortality rates for all other types of cancer were lower than those of the national average, but an increasing trend was observed for all the cancers, particularly from 1990-1992 to 2004-2005. The temporal trend could be party explained by changes in risk factors, but it also may be due to the improvement in cancer diagnosis and screening. Further epidemiological studies are warranted to systematically examine the underlying reasons for the temporal trend of the major cancers in Xuanwei County.

A fundamental challenge that arises in biomedicine is the need to characterize compounds in a relevant cellular context in order to reveal potential on-target or offtarget ***,the fast accumulation of gene transcriptional profiling data provides us an unprecedented opportunity to explore the protein targets of chemical compounds from the perspective of cell transcriptomics and RNA ***,we propose a novel Siamese spectral-based graph convolutional network(SSGCN)model for inferring the protein targets of chemical compounds from gene transcriptional *** the gene signature of a compound perturbation only provides indirect clues of the interacting targets,and the biological networks under different experiment conditions further complicate the situation,the SSGCN model was successfully trained to learn from known compound-target pairs by uncovering the hidden correlations between compound perturbation profiles and gene knockdown *** a benchmark set and a large time-split validation dataset,the model achieved higher target inference accuracy as compared to previous methods such as Connectivity *** experimental validations of prediction results highlight the practical usefulness of SSGCN in either inferring the interacting targets of compound,or reversely,in finding novel inhibitors of a given target of interest.

Insight into Urban Faults by Wavelet Multi-Scale Analysis and Modeling of Gravity Data in Shenzhen,China

Urban faults in Shenzhen are potential threats to city security and sustainable development. In consideration of the importance of the Shenzhen fault zone, the author provide a detailed interpretation on gravity data model. Bouguer gravity covering the whole Shenzhen City was calculated with a 1-km resolution. Wavelet multi-scale analysis（MSA） was applied to the Bouguer gravity data to obtain the multilayer residual anomalies corresponding to different depths. In addition, 2D gravity models were constructed along three profiles. The Bouguer gravity anomaly shows an NE-striking high-low-high pattern from northwest to southeast, strongly related to the main faults. According to the results of MSA, the correlation between gravity anomaly and faults is particularly significant from 4 to 12 km depth. The residual gravity with small amplitude in each layer indicates weak tectonic activity in the crust. In the upper layers, positive anomalies along most of faults reveal the upwelling of high-density materials during the past tectonic movements. The multilayer residual anomalies also yield important information about the faults, such as the vertical extension and the dip direction. The maximum depth of the faults is about 20 km. In general, NE-striking faults extend deeper than NW-striking faults and have a larger dip angle.
