Smoking, alcohol consumption, and the risk of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma:A meta-analysis

AIM:To assess the association between smoking and alcohol consumption and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ECC)through a meta-analysis of clinical observational ***:A literature search was conducted using Embase and MEDLINE databases from inception to 31May 2013 without language limitations,and by manually searching the references of retrieved *** and cohort studies that investigated the association between smoking or alcohol consumption and ECC were *** quality of these studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment *** relative risks and corresponding95%CI were calculated using a random-effects *** bias was assessed by Begg’s funnel plot and Egger’s ***:A total of 12 eligible articles(11 case-control studies and one cohort study)were included in this *** studies reported the association between smoking and *** analysis indicated that smokers had an increased risk of ECC development as compared with non-smokers(summary RR=1.23;95%CI:1.01-1.50).This correlation was present in population-based studies(n=5;summary RR=1.47;95%CI:1.06-2.05)but not in hospital-based studies(n=6;summary RR=1.10;95%CI:0.88-1.37)and in non-Asian regions(n=7;summary RR=1.39;95%CI:1.03-1.87)but not in Asia(n=4;summary RR=1.08;95%CI:0.85-1.38).Seven studies reported an association between consuming alcohol and *** analysis indicated that alcohol drinkers had a similar risk of ECC development as did individuals who did not drink alcohol(summary RR=1.09;95%CI:0.87-1.37).There was moderate heterogeneity among the studies and no evidence of publication ***:Smoking is associated with an increased risk of ECC,but alcohol consumption is *** population-based studies,particularly cohort studies,are warranted to enable definitive conclusions.

A rice residual heterozygous line （RHL） carrying a heterozygous segment extending from RM111 to RM19784 on the short arm of rice chromosome 6 was selected from a RHL-derived population used previously. The resultant F2：3 population was used to detect quantitative trait loci （QTLs） for three yield traits, the number of spikelets per panicle （NSP）, the number of grains per panicle （NGP） and grain yield per plant （GY）. Two QTLs for NSP, one QTL for NGP and one QTL for GY were detected, all of which were partially dominant and had the enhancing alleles from the maternal line Zhenshan 97B. Analysis based on the genotypic groups of the markers closely linked to the two QTLs for NSP indicated that they did not interact with each other. Two F2 populations and two near isogenic line （NIL） sets segregating in two sub-regions of interval RM111-RM19784 were developed. The two QTLs for NSP were validated, of which one had major effect and was co-segregated with heading date gene Hdl, and the other had smaller effect and was located in an upper region linked to Hdl. The two regions also showed significant effects on the number of filled grain and grain yield, although the effect on the number of filled grain was less consistent.

For about three decades, DNA-based nanotechnology has been undergoing development as an assembly method for nanostructured materials. The DNA origami method pioneered by Rothemund paved the way for the formation of 3D structures using DNA self assembly. The origami approach uses a long scaffold strand as the input for the self assembly of a few hundred staple strands into desired shapes. Herein, we present a 3D origami "roller" (75 nm in length) designed using caDNAno software. This has the potential to be used as a template to assemble nanoparticles into different pre-defined shapes. The "roller" was characterized with agarose gel electrophoresis, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Zooplankton are important linkages in the food web and can respond nonlinearly to environmental *** organisms thrive from spring to ***,it is crucial to understand how ecological functions of zooplankton communities may shift under seasonal environmental changes during this *** were collected from May to August(May,June-Ⅰ,June-Ⅱ,July-Ⅰ,July-Ⅱ,and August)in 2018 in Haizhou Bay,Jiangsu,East China for zooplankton and environmental *** accounted for 75 out of 134 zooplankton taxa and 91.8%of total zooplankton *** average abundance of crustacean varied between 2824.6±635.4 inds./m3 in July-Ⅱand 6502.7±1008.8 inds./m3 in June-Ⅱ.Multivariate analyses results showed that the dissimilarity of community increased gradually in the time *** length,feeding type,trophic group,and reproduction mode were used to investigate crustacean community ***-based functional groups contained species with similar ecological *** diversity fused the differences of species and *** proportion of large-sized species(2-5 mm)decreased with the increasing proportion of medium-sized species(1-2 mm).The proportion of current feeders increased with the drop in the proportion of mixed *** species increased with decreasing free spawners,and omnivores-carnivores increased with decreasing *** additive models suggested that temperature was the main driver of variations in crustacean zooplankton *** identified functional groups varied with increasing ***-herbivorous copepods declined(90.0%-68.0%),whereas the parthenogenetic cladocerans increased(0-24.1%).The small egg-brooding ambush copepods fluctuated(6.5%-9.3%)with increasing water *** other functional groups changed *** diversity also varied according to temperature *** community structure and ecological function of crustacean zooplankton community

Latent tuberculosis infection(LTBI)has become a major source of active tuberculosis(ATB).Although the tuberculin skin test and interferon-gamma release assay can be used to diagnose LTBI,these methods can only differentiate infected individuals from healthy ones but cannot discriminate between LTBI and ***,the diagnosis of LTBI faces many challenges,such as the lack of effective biomarkers from Mycobacterium tuberculosis(MTB)for distinguishing LTBI,the low diagnostic efficacy of biomarkers derived from the human host,and the absence of a gold standard to differentiate between LTBI and *** culture,as the gold standard for diagnosing tuberculosis,is time-consuming and cannot distinguish between ATB and *** this article,we review the pathogenesis of MTB and the immune mechanisms of the host in LTBI,including the innate and adaptive immune responses,multiple immune evasion mechanisms of MTB,and epigenetic *** on this knowledge,we summarize the current status and challenges in diagnosing LTBI and present the application of machine learning(ML)in LTBI diagnosis,as well as the advantages and limitations of ML in this ***,we discuss the future development directions of ML applied to LTBI diagnosis.

Replacement of fish meal with cottonseed protein concentrate in Chinese mitten crab(Eriocheir sinensis): Nutrient digestibility, growth performance, free amino acid profile, and expression of genes related to nutrient metabolism

This study aimed to investigate the application of cottonseed protein concentrate(CPC) in Chinese mitten crabs(Eriocheir sinensis). First, the apparent digestibility coefficient(ADC) of CPC, fish meal and soybean meal were compared in crabs(21.72 ± 0.33 g). The protein ADC of CPC was 90.42%, which was significantly higher than that of soybean meal(83.16%)(P < 0.05). The ADC of Phe, Cys and Glu of CPC were significantly higher than those of fish meal, while the ADC of Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Thr and Ala of CPC were significantly lower(P < 0.05). Second, we investigated the effects of fish meal substitution by CPC on growth performance, free amino acid profile, and expression of genes related to nutrient metabolism in crabs. Six diets were formulated by replacing 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 75% fish meal with CPC, namely FM, CPC15, CPC30, CPC45, CPC60, and CPC75. A total of 630 crabs(1.68 ± 0.00 g) were randomly divided into 18 tanks(3 tanks per group) and fed 3 times daily for 9 weeks. Results showed that CPC75 group significantly reduced growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, and free Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, and Thr contents in muscle(P < 0.05). The contents of free amino acids(Arg, His, Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Phe, Thr, Val,Ala, Cys, Glu, Gly, Ser and Tyr) in hepatopancreas decreased linearly with the increase of dietary CPC level(P < 0.05). The substitution of more than 45% fish meal with CPC significantly decreased the concentration of delicious amino acids(Ala, Glu and Gly) in hepatopancreas(P < 0.05), which might adversely affect crab flavor. The expression of genes related to antioxidant capacity, protein transport, TOR pathway and lipid metabolism was significantly downregulated by increasing dietary CPC level(P < 0.05). In conclusion, based on the quadratic regression analysis of FCR and PER, the optimal replacement levels of fish meal with CPC in crab diet containing 35% fish meal were 32.36% and 35.38%, respectively. Dear Editor,An increasing number of studies have shown that PIWIinteracting RNAs(piRNAs)are aberrantly expressed in many types of human cancer and involved in regulating the malignant progression,piRNAs would be expected to serve as molecular biomarkers for cancer screening and early *** a previous study,we have identified the presence of piRNA-54265 in human serum[1].Further research has demonstrated that it is a promising and specific blood molecularmarker for colorectal cancer(CRC)[2].In these studies,we have developed a stem-loop primer reverse transcription-quantitative PCR(RT-qPCR)approach to determine the piRNA-54265 levels,which included the reverse transcription of piRNA-54265 to cDNA using a stem-loop primer and the quantitative detection of cDNA by PCR with the primers and probe specific for piR-54265[2].
