The objective of this research is to evaluate an impact of asphalt mixture beams with varying sizes of aggregate in the Bending Beam Rheometer （BBR） for testing/predicting thermal cracking properties of asphalt pavements. The BBR test has following benefits： the equipment is cheaper, it uses smaller specimens, faster conditioning, easier availability for quality control, easier to manage, etc. However some concerns have been raised： some consider that the size of the aggregate may affect the test＇s results; the other concern is that such small beams cannot represent the whole properties of the asphalt pavement. To address these criticisms, imaging techniques, statistical analysis, and viscoelastic modeling are used. Asphalt thin beams prepared with three different nominal maximum aggregate size （NMAS）（12.5mm, 9.5 mm, and 4.75 mm） were tested at three different temperatures （-18℃, -24℃, and -30℃）. Based on results from statistical analyses and viscoelasticity, the ratio of asphalt binders and voids and stiffness differences among the three NMAS specimens are not significant, meaning that the impact of asphalt thin beams prepared with the three NMAS on the prediction of thermal cracking is minimal and can be neglected.

The occurrence of antibiotics in the environment has recently raised serious concerns regarding their potential threat to human health and aquatic ecosystem. A new magnetic nanocomposite, Fe304@C （Fe304 coated with carbon）, was synthesized, characterized, and then applied to remove five commonly-used sulfonamides （SAs） from water. Due to its combinational merits of the outer functionalized carbon shell and the inner magnetite core, Fe3O4@C exhibited a high adsorption affinity for selected SAs and a fast magnetic separability. The adsorption kinetics of SAs on Fe304 @ C could be expressed by the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption isotherms were fitted well with the Dual-mode model, revealing that the adsorption process consisted of an initial partitioning stage and a subsequent hole-filling stage. Solution pH exerted a strong impact on the adsorption process with the maximum removal efficiencies （74% to 96%） obtained at pH 4.8 for all selected SAs. Electrostatic force and hydrogen bonding were two major driving forces for adsorption, and electron-donor-acceptor interactions may also make a certain contribution. Because the synthesized Fe304@C showed comprehensive advantages of high adsorptivity, fast magnetic separability, and prominent reusability, it has potential applications in water treatment.

Portable communication systems can provide mobile users with global roaming services. Recently, Youn and Lim proposed a delegation-based authentication protocol which achieves unlinkability for secure roaming services. This paper indicates that there are two drawbacks in Youn and Lim＇s protocol： 1） the synchronization problem will lead to a fail in on-line authentication; and 2） the exhaustive search puts a heavy burden on the off-line authentication process. Moreover, based on Youn and Lim＇s protocol, a remedy is proposed to address these problems. it is worthwhile to note that the proposed remedy not only keeps the original advantages but also enhances the security and performance.

The epithelium of the human epididymis maintains an appropriate luminal environment for sperm maturation that is essential for male fertility. Regional expression of small noncoding RNAs such as microRNAs contributes to segment-specific gene expression and differentiated functions. MicroRNA profiles were reported in human epididymal tissues but not specifically in the epithelial cells derived from those regions. Here, we reveal miRNA signatures of primary cultures of caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis epithelial cells and of the tissues from which they were derived. We identify 324 epithelial cell-derived microRNAs and 259 tissue-derived microRNAs in the epididymis, some of which displayed regionalized expression patterns in cells and/or tissues. Caput cell-enriched miRNAs included miR-573 and miR-155. Cauda cell-enriched miRNAs included miR-1204 and miR-770. Next, we determined the gene ontology pathways associated with in silico predicted target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs. The effect of androgen receptor stimulation on miRNA expression was also investigated. These data show novel epithelial cell-derived miRNAs that may regulate the expression of important gene networks that are responsible for the regionalized gene expression and function of the epididymis.

A series of salicylideneaniline derivatives 1a-lf were synthesized under mild condition in high yields, and characterized by ^1H NMR, HRMS, UV-vis and emission spectra. in solid and aprotic solvents 1a-1f exist mainly as E conformers that possess a sixmembered-ring hydrogen bond and undergo excited-state intramolecular proton transfer （ESiPT） reactions, resulting in a protontransfer tautomer emission. Depending on the electronic donor or acceptor strength of the substituent in either the HOMO or LUMO site, a broad tuning range of the emission from green （1c） to red （1a） has been achieved.

This study tries to discuss the relationship between landscape structure and organisms in the perspective of landscape architecture. The research hypotheses were then proposed as (1) there are relationships between landscape structure indexes and birds' diversity in the rural areas of Taiwan; (2) the relationships between landscape structure and birds' diversity will be different in different hierarchical levels. in order to increase the bird species, landscape planners could tries to increase the density of water bodies, but decrease the farms and human planted woods. Decrease the density of constructed and human planted grasslands. increase the area of un-worked acres, natural grasslands, and the area of water bodies and circular the water bodies and natural forest. in order to increase birds' diversity, landscape planners could decrease the concentration of paved areas. Concentrate the human planted trees to increase the core areas of woodlands. increase the area of natural grassland circular. in order to increase the total number of birds in the planning areas, landscape planners could scattered the paved areas and lengthen the constructed areas. Decreases the core region of the constructed areas. increase the area of un-worked acres and water bodies. Decrease the disturbance of both the interior area of natural and human planted woodlands and try to increase the density of water bodies.;The analysis results showed that the small grain size indexes are more suitable for the rural areas of Taiwan to capture the influential factors of bird communities. The high fragmentation of land usages in Taiwan lessens the influences of the regional landscape pattern.

Worst-Case Finish Time Analysis for DAG-Based Applications in the Presence of Transient Faults

Tasks in hard real-time systems are required to meet preset deadlines, even in the presence of transient faults and hence the analysis of worst-case finish time （WCFT） must consider the extra time incurred by re-executing tasks that were faulty. Existing solutions can only estimate WCFT and usually result in significant under- or over-estimation. in this work, we conclude that a sufficient and necessary condition of a task set experiencing its WCFT is that its critical task incurs all expected transient faults. A method is presented to identify the critical task and WCFT in O（iVi ＋ iEi） where iVi and iEi are the number of tasks and dependencies between tasks, respectively. This method finds its application in testing the feasibility of directed acyclic graph （DAG） based task sets scheduled in a wide variety of fault-prone multi-processor systems, where the processors could be either homogeneous or heterogeneous, DVS-capable or DVS-incapable, etc. The common practices, which require the same time complexity as the proposed critical-task method, could either underestimate the worst case by up to 25%, or overestimate by 13%. Based on the proposed critical-task method, a simulated-annealing scheduling algorithm is developed to find the energy efficient fault-tolerant schedule for a given DAG task set. Experimental results show that the proposed critical-task method wins over a common practice by up to 40% in terms of energy saving.

Jugular Bulb Diverticulum: A Rare Cause of Pulsatile Tinnitus and Literature Review

Objectives: Pulsatile tinnitus involves a wide spectrum of etiologies. The etiologies include normal vascular variants, temporal bone tumor, acquired vascular lesions and chronic middle ear inflammatory diseases. Jugular bulb diverticulum is a rare cause of pulsatile tinnitus. We report one case of jugular diverticulum presenting with pulsatile tinnitus and its surgical management and outcome. Case Report: A 36-year-old woman with a history of uterine myoma and chronic anemia presented with right pulsatile tinnitus that was worsening in recent one month. Neurological exam was normal. ENT evaluation revealed no abnormalities via otoscopy and physical examination. The CT scan revealed right dominant jugular bulb with diverticulum projecting to posterior ear canal wall. We performed jugular bulb diverticulum resurfacing with temporalis fascia, Surgicel® and Gelfoam®, and bone wax via transmastoid approach. The symptom improved postoperative immediately. No major complications were noted during outpatient clinic follow-up. Conclusion: Transmastoid resurfacing of jugular bulb diverticulum is an effective management of pulsatile tinnitus from this kind vascular anomaly.

Strengthening reinforced concrete beams using prestressed glass fiber-reinforced polymer-Part i: Experimental study

This work is aimed at studying the strengthening of reinforced concrete (R. C.) beams using prestressed glass fi- ber-reinforced polymer (PGFRP). Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has recently become popular for use as repair or rehabilitation material for deteriorated R. C. structures, but because CFRP material is very stiff, the difference in CFRP sheet and concrete material properties is not favorable for transferring the prestress from CFRP sheets to R. C. members. Glass fi- ber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets with Modulus of Elasticity quite close to that of concrete was chosen in this study. The load-carrying capacities (ultimate loads) and the deflections of strengthened R. C. beams using GFRP and PGFRP sheets were tested and compared. T- and ⊥-shaped beams were used as the under-strengthened and over-strengthened beams. The GFRP sheets were prestressed to one-half their tensile capacities before being bonded to the T- and ⊥-shaped R. C. beams. The prestressed tension in the PGFRP sheets caused cambers in the R. C. beams without cracks on the tensile faces. The PGFRP sheets also enhanced the load-carrying capacity. The test results indicated that T-shaped beams with GFRP sheets increased in load-carrying capacity by 55% while the same beams with PGFRP sheets could increase load-carrying capacity by 100%. The ⊥-shaped beams with GFRP sheets could increase load-carrying capacity by 97% while the same beams with PGFRP sheets could increase the loading-carrying capacity by 117%. Under the same external loads, beams with GFRP sheets underwent larger deflections than beams with PGFRP sheets. While GFRP sheets strengthen R. C. beams, PGFRP sheets decrease the beams’ ductility, especially for the over-strengthened beams (⊥-shaped beams).
