AIM:To investigate serum cystatin C level as an early biomarker for predicting acute kidney injury(AKI)in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF).METHODS:Fifty-six consecutive patients with hepatitis B virus-related ACLF who had normal serum creatinine(Cr)level(<1.2 mg/dL in men,or<1.1 mg/dL in women)were enrolled in the Liver Failure Treatment and Research Center of Beijing 302 Hospital between August 2011 and October *** patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB)and 30 healthy controls in the same study period were also *** of serum cystatin C(CysC)was performed by a particle-enhanced immunonephelometry assay using the BN Prospec nephelometer *** ACLF patients were followed during their hospitalization ***:In the ACLF group,serum level of CysC was 1.1±0.4 mg/L,which was significantly higher(P<0.01)than those in the healthy controls(0.6±0.3mg/L)and CHB patients(0.7±0.2 mg/L).During the hospitalization period,eight ACLF patients developed *** regression analysis indicated that CysC level was an independent risk factor for AKI development(odds ratio=1.8;95%CI:1.4-2.3,P=0.021).The cutoff value of serum CysC for prediction of AKI in ACLF patients was 1.21 mg/*** baseline CysC-based estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR CysC)was significantly lower than the creatinine-based eGFR(eGFR CG and eGFR MDRD)in ACLF patients with AKI,suggesting that baseline eGFR CysC represented early renal function in ACLF patients while the Cr levels were still within the normal ***:Serum CysC provides early prediction of renal dysfunction in ACLF patients with a normal serum Cr level.

The Palmer drought severity index(PDSI) is physically based with multivariate concepts, but requires complicated calibration and cannot easily be used for multiscale comparison. Standardized drought indices(SDIs), such as the standardized precipitation index(SPI) and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index(SPEI), are multiscalar and convenient for spatiotemporal comparison, but they are still challenged by their lack of physical basis. In this study, a hybrid multiscalar indicator, the standardized Palmer drought index(SPDI), was used to examine drought properties of two meteorological stations(the Beijing and Guangzhou stations) in China, which have completely different drought climatologies. The results of our case study show that the SPDI is correlated with the well-established drought indices(SPI, SPEI, and PDSI) and presents generally consistent drought/wetness conditions against multiple indicators and literature records. Relative to the PDSI, the SPDI demonstrates invariable statistical characteristics and better comparable drought/wetness frequencies over time and space. Moreover,characteristics of major drought events(drought class, and onset and end times) indicated by the SPDI are generally comparable to those detected by the PDSI. As a physically-based standardized multiscalar drought indicator, the SPDI can be regarded as an effective development of the Palmer drought indices, providing additional choices and tools for practical drought monitoring and assessment.

Several types of ILs and solid acids were used as catalysts in one-pot conversion of sucrose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural（abbreviated as 5-HMF） in a dimethyl sulfoxide（DMSO）/water mixed solvent under hydrothermal conditions. A remarkable 5-HMF yield of 91.8% was achieved catalyzed by the cesium salt of dodecatungstophosphoric acid（Cs（2.3）H（0.7）PW（12）O（40）） within 3 h at 180 C. The ionic liquid N-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate（[Hmim][HSO4]） gave the 5-HMF in 82.0% yield from sucrose. To the best of our knowledge, it was almost the highest yield of HMF from sucrose by now. Various reaction parameters including reaction temperature and time and catalyst dosage were optimized. A possible mechanism for this catalytic process was proposed. Furthermore, fructose and glucose were also investigated, good yields of 5-HMF was obtained respectively. This increases the possibility of large-scale production of 5-HMF from carbohydrates.

In order to sustainably transform N2 to ammonia(NRR)using electrocatalysts under mild ambient condition,it is urgent to design and develop non-nobel metal nanocatalysts that are inexpensive and suitable for ***,a calcium metalate catalyst CaCoO_(x)with oxygen vacancies was synthesized and used as an electrocatalyst for NRR for the first time,whose morphology can be controlled by the calcination temperature and the heating *** the optimal conditions,the CaCoO_(x)catalyst achieved the yield of nitrogen conversion to ammonia of 16.25μg·h^(-1)·mg_(cat.)^(-1)at the potential of-0.3 V relative to the reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)with a Faraday efficiency of 20.51%.The electrocatalyst showed good stability even after 12 times recyclability under environmental conditions and neutral ***,the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance of CaFeO_(x),CaNiO_(x),CaCuO_(x)was *** earth-rich transition metals also exhibited certain NRR electrocatalytic capabilities,which provided a door for further development of inexpensive and easily available transition metal as nitrogen reduction electrocatalysts.
