Expression of E-cadherin and α-catenin in a varicocele-induced infertility rat model

The roles of E-cadherin and α-catenin were evaluated in the development of varicocele-induced infertility. Analysis of the association between the expression of E-cadherinla-catenin and clinical/pathological parameters was performed. Thirty lO-week-old male rats （experimental group） were used for the experiments; the left renal vein was ligated to form a varicocele. The abdomen was incised in 30 rats （control group） and no procedure was performed on 10 rats （baseline group）. The weights of the left testis, serum reactive oxygen species （ROS）, testosterone, luteinizing hormone （LH）, follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH） and degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules after 4 and 8 weeks were recorded. The expression of E-cadherin and α-catenin was evaluated by immunohistochemical （IHC） staining and Western blot analysis. The ROS increased in the 8-week experimental group, compared with the baseline and control groups （P〈0.001 for both）. Additionally, FSH significantly increased in the 4- and 8-week experimental group compared with the control groups （P= 0.013 and P= 0.032, respectively）. The ratio of degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules of the experimental groups increased. The IHC staining showed that the expression of E-cadherin and a-catenin decreased in the 4- and 8-week experimental groups. Similar to the IHC staining, the experimental group had decreased reactivity on Western blot analysis. The expression of E-cadherin and a-catenin was significantly associated with the ROS and degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules. The results of this study suggest that damage to the blood-testis barrier （BTB） is associated with varicocele-induced male infertility, and that ROS may cause damage to the BTB.

Development of Precise Geoid Model for the Establishment of Consistent Height System in Geoga Grand Bridge Construction Area

The national benchmarks on islands were mostly established by trigonometric leveling in Korea. This method results in inaccuracy, which is a serious problem in Geoga Grand Bridge construction work that tried to link the mainland and the islands. The Geoga Grand Bridge （Pusan-Geoje fixed link project） was selected as the study area, a huge construction work in Korea that will connect the mainland （Pnsan） and an island （Gecje island）. However, the orthometric heights issued at benchmarks （JINH and GOFJ） were not consistent, because they did not refer to the same zero point, which would make the linking of the sections problematic. This paper introduces the precise local geoidas a vertical datum for the construction area in order to establish a consistent height system. To determine the precise local geoid for the construction area, we firstly developed a precise gravimetric geoid for Korea and its adjoining seas as a whole. This gravimetric geoid was developed by use of all available gravity data, including surface and satellite data on land and on the ocean. The gravimetrie gecid was computed by spherical fast fourier transform with modified Stokes＇ kernels. The remove-restore technique was used to eliminate the terrain effects by use of the RTM reduction and to determine the residual geoid by combining the GGM02S/EGM96 geopotential model, free-air gravity anomalies and high-resolutinn DEM data. Finally, the gravimetric model was fitted to the geoid heights obtained from GPS and tide observations （Ncps/Tiae） by least square coUocatian, to provide the final GPS-consistent local precise geoid model. The post-fit error （std. dev. ） of the final geoid to the NetS/Tide derived from GPS and tide observations was ± 2.2 cm for the construction area. We solved the height inconsistency problem by calculating the orthometric height of the benchmarks and the cnntrol points using the final geoid model. Enhanced refolding of lysozyme with imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids: Effect of hydrophobicity and sulfur residue

The expression of recombinant proteins in microorganism frequently leads to the formation of insoluble aggregates, inclusion bodies （IBs）. Thus, the additional in vitro protein refolding process is required to convert inactive IBs into water-soluble active proteins. This study investigated the effect of sulfur residue and hydrophobicity of imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids （RTILs） on the refolding of lysozyme as a model protein in the batch dilution method which is the most commonly used refolding method. When lysozyme was refolded in the refolding buffer containing [BF4]-based RTILs with a systematic variety of alkyl chain on cations varying from two to eight, less hydrophobic imidazolium cations having shorter alkyl chains were effective to facilitate lysozyme refolding. Compared to the conventional refolding buffer, 2 times higher lysozyme re- folding yield was obtained in l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate （[EMIM][BF4]） containing refolding buffer. The refolding yield of lysozyme was even more increased by 2.5 times when 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate （[BMIM][MS]） containing sulfur residue on anion was used. The sulfur residue in [BMIM][MS] is supposed to improve the refolding yield of lysozyme which has 4 intrarnolecular disulfide bonds. For dilution-based refolding of lysozyme, the opti- mum concentrations of RTILs in refolding buffer were found to be 1.0 M [EMIM][BF4] and 0.5 M [PMIM][MS], respectively. The optimum temperate for dilution-based refolding of lysozyme with RTILs was 4 ℃.

Callus proliferation-induced hypoxic microenvironment decreases shoot regeneration competence in Arabidopsis

The observation of the sparkling discharges during the micro-arc oxidation process in KOH aqueous electrolyte was achieved. The change of surface morphology was progressively observed and a plausible pore formation mechanism is proposed. Cell proliferation and ALP activity of micro- arc oxidized titanium was evaluated by human body derived osteoblasts and sligtaly better than those of blasted surface.

Greenhouse Building Energy Simulation(BES)models were developed to estimate the energy load using TRNSYS(ver.16,University of Wisconsin,USA),a commercial BES *** was conducted based on data recorded during field *** BES greenhouse modeling is reliable,as validation showed 5.2%and 5.5%compared with two field experiments,*** the next step,the heating characteristics of the greenhouses were analyzed to predict the maximum and annual total heating loads based on the greenhouse types and target locations in the Republic of Korea using the validated greenhouse *** BES-computed results indicated that the annual heating load was greatly affected by the local climate conditions of the target *** annual heating load of greenhouses located in Chuncheon,the northernmost region,was 44.6%higher than greenhouses in Jeju,the southernmost area among the studied *** regression models for prediction of maximum heating load of Venlo type greenhouse and widespan type greenhouse were developed based on the BES computed results to easily predict maximum heating load at field and they explained nearly 95%and 80%of the variance in the data set used,respectively,with the predictor *** a BES model of geothermal energy system was additionally designed and incorporated into the BES greenhouse *** feasibility of the geothermal energy system for greenhouse was estimated through economic analysis.

Study on SCR De NO_x mechanism through in situ electrical conductivity measurements on V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2 catalysts

V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method and in situ electrical conductivity measurements were carried out to investigate the reaction mechanism for ammonia SCR (selective catalytic reduction) of NOx. The electrical conductivity change with ammonia supply and the increase of electrical conductivity were mainly caused by reduction of the labile surface oxygen. The electrical conductivity change of catalysts shows close relationship with the conversion rate of NOx. Variation of conversion rate in atmosphere without gaseous oxygen also supports that the labile lattice oxygen is indispensable in the initial stage of the de NOx reaction. These results suggest that the liable lattice oxygen acts decisive role in the de NOx mechanism. They also support that De NOx reaction occurs through the Eley-Rideal type mechanism. The amount of labile oxygen can be estimated from the measurement of electrical conductivity change for catalysts with ammonia supply.

Safety assessment of condensed phosphate intake from fishery and processed marine food products in Korea with respect to gender,age,and region

Condensed phosphates are used as food additives,especially in marine products and meat,to improve food *** import and consumption of fishery and processed marine food products in Republic of Korea have reportedly increased by~5 per cent ***,processed marine food products are often intentionally adulterated with excessive amounts of condensed phosphates to increase their *** intake of condensed phosphates via consuming processed marine food products can lead to various adverse effects on human health due to anionic ***,we conducted a safety assessment of condensed phosphates in 14 types of fishery and processed marine food products in Korea for the first *** analysis of various factors including gender,age,and region was also performed,and the risk level of exposure for each group was *** assessments by age and gender indicated that infants were at the highest *** the regional safety assessment,Chungnam,the most inland region,showed the lowest *** both the general and the high-intake groups(95th percentile)in all classifications,the risk was lower(han the international standard,and the phosphorus content of the 14 types of processed marine products in Korea was confirmed to be safe for human consumption.

Korean freshwater snails of the genus Semisulcospira are widely distributed across East *** has been a very popular nutritional food in Korea,and is an ecologically important water quality indicator because it lives only in clean ***,no microsatellite markers have been generated to study the population genetic diversity of this *** the present study,we developed and characterized 18 novel microsatellite loci from Semisulcospira coreana genomic *** microsatellites were isolated using 454 GS-FLX titanium sequencing and 18 markers were used for genotyping in *** addition,we also tested the cross-species transferability of the microsatellite markers in four additional Semisulcospira *** identified 18 polymorphic loci and the number of alleles per loci,and their polymorphism information content values ranged from 2 to 17 and 0.203 to 0.902,*** observed and expected heterozygosities of the loci ranged from 0.063 to 0.924 and 0.226 to 0.924,*** to the analysis of the cross-species transferability of these markers,four species,***,***,***,and ***,showed a very high transferability(80%–85%).These results show that this set of nuclear markers could be useful for population genetics studies of this species and closely related species.
