We performed direct hematoma evacuation of thalamic and intraventricular hemorrhage using mini-craniotomy in recent years. The present study evaluated the outcome and complications in 18 patients with spontaneous thalamic and intraventricular hemorrhage treated by mini-craniotomy hematoma evacuation with external ventricular drainage and 24 patients treated by only external ventricular drainage. Patients treated by mini-craniotomy were less likely to require days of ventricular drainage settlement, had a less suffering meningitis, had good hematoma evacuation rate and had a less mortality rate compared with those undergoing only external ventricular drainage. Frontal mini-craniotomy microscope operation is a simple and effective method for hematoma evacuation that causes fewer complications.

The design of flexible composite electrodes has become the top priority in energy storage devices for the development of future wearable intelligent ***,searching for fully integrated,ultrathin flexible composite electrodes with satisfying electrochemical performance is still a major ***,we introduce a nanoporous gold metallic glass(MG) ribbon-based composite electrode with excellent electric conductivity,mechanical flexibility,and extra capacitance by integrating polypyrrole(PPy) into wrinkled nanoporous ribbon(NPG@MG).The freestanding,ultrathin,highly conductive and flexible" nature of the composite electrode prevents the conducting polymer from structural instability resulting from the volume swell and shrink during the charging/discharging circulation,and the packed PPy provides protection for the wrinkled topology on the surface of the MG *** capacitance of pure NPG@MG-PPy composite electrode reached 393 mF·cm^(-2).The ultra-thin all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor demonstrates an excellent capacitance of 172 mF·cM^(-2)(14.8 F·cm^(-3)),accompanied by a superior cycling capability after 8000 charge/discharge cycles attributed to mechanical *** areal energy density also reached 0.74 mWh·cm^(-3)(9μWh·cm^(-2)) at a power density of 1 μW·cm^(-2).This work provides valuable concepts on the design of PPy-based hybrid materials for flexible energy storage systems with greatly enhanced electrochemical performances.

Phytoremediation of Oil-Contaminated Soils by Combining Flowering Plant Cultivation and Inoculation with <i>Acinetobacter junii</i>Strain M-2

Oil contamination of the soil by petroleum products has become an enormous environmental problem. In this study, we examined whether remediation of oil-contaminated soils by cultivating three flowering plants (Mimosa, Gazania, and Zinnia) could be enhanced by inoculation with Acinetobacter junii strain M-2 at different plant growth stages (at sowing, at early growth, and at mid-growth). The growth of Zinnia cultivated in oil-contaminated soils inoculated at sowing was significantly superior to that in the non-inoculated soil. Although total petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in soils inoculated at sowing were nominally lower than those in non-inoculated soils, especially in the case of Zinnia planting, the effect did not reach statistical significance. However, dehydrogenase activity was significantly higher in the soils inoculated with A. junii strain M-2 than in non-inoculated soils for all three plant species tested. These results demonstrate that a combination of ornamental plant cultivation (particularly Zinnia) and inoculation with A. junii strain M-2 increases the efficiency of oil-contaminated soil phytoremediation.

Effects of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) on Zinnia hybrida Growth and Phytoremediation Effects in Oil-Contaminated Soil

In this study, we compared plant height, weight, soil TPH concentration, and soil DHA level after 18 weeks of Zennia hybrida cultivation with four different concentrations of 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-based liquid fertilizer: 1500-fold, 5000-fold, and 8000-fold dilutions, along with a non-treatment control of diluted ALA. The plants of ALA-treated were significantly taller than the non-treatment control. The plants of ALA-treated plants were higher in shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight than the non-treatment control. The plot of ALA-based liquid fertilizer with the 5000-fold dilution was significantly highest in shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight. ALA-treated plants were lower in the soil Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration than the non-treatment control. The plot of ALA-based liquid fertilizer with the 5000-fold was significantly lowest in the TPH concentration. In addition, ALA-treated plants were higher in the soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA) than the non-treatment control. The plot of ALA-based liquid fertilizer with the 5000-fold was significantly highest in the TPH concentration. This study indicated that ALA-applied zinnia-grown oil-contaminated soil is more effective than not. The remediation in oil-contaminated soil with ALA-based liquid fertilizer is more effective than the non-treatment control;furthermore, ALA application with 5000-fold dilution was most suitable in oil-contaminated soil among other plots.

The polysaccharides, such as κ-carrageenan, ι-carrageenan, agarose (agar), gellan gum, amylose, curdlan, alginate, and deacetylated rhamsan gum, in water changed into an ice-like structure with hydrogen bonding between polymer and water molecules, and between water-water molecules even at a concentration range of 0.1% - 1.0% (W/V) at room temperature, resulting in gelation. Such dramatic changes from liquid into gels have been understood at the molecular level in principles. In this review, we describe the structure-function relationship of starch on the view point of rheological aspects and discuss gelatinization and retrogradation mechanism including water molecules at molecular level. The starch molecules (amylose and amylopectin) play a dominant role in the center of the tetrahedral cavities occupied by water molecules, and the arrangement is partially similar to a tetrahedral structure in a gelatinization process. The arrangement should lead to a cooperative effect stabilizing extended regions of ice-like water with hydrogen bonding on the surface of the polymer molecules, where hemiacetal oxygen and hydroxyl groups might participate in hydrogen bonding with water molecules. Thus, a more extended ice-like hydrogen bonding within water molecules might be achieved in a retrogradation process. Though many investigations not only include starch gelatinization and retrogradaion, but also the gelling properties of the polysaccharides have been undertaken to elucidate the structure-function relationship, no other researchers have established mechanism at the molecular level. There is reasonable consistency in our investigations.

Zhenxuanyin (镇眩饮) is composed of pure Chinese medicinal herbs, such as gastrodia tuber, poria cocos, ligusticum wallichii etc. 4-verssel occlusion (4VO) model rats were reperfused after 30 minutes’ complete occlusion, and Zhenxuanyin was administered 3 times a day. 24 hours later, 123I-IMP uptake in the brain was evaluated as an index of cerebral blood flow (CBF). The results show that Zhenxuanyin (0.03g kg, 0.3g kg, Ig kg, or 3g/ kg a day) can greatly improve the blood flow in the main cerebral regions, and 0.3g/ kg can increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) to the normal level.

Backgrounds: Injury to the vagus nerve or one of its branches during carotid endarterectomy can result in vocal fold paralysis but the exact mechanism of injury responsible for vocal fold paralysis after carotid endarterectomy is unclear. Aims: This study was performed to identify potential predictors of vagus nerve injury and obtain feedback by application of intraoperative continuous vagus nerve monitoring. Materials and Methods: Seventy-four patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy were enrolled. A new vagus nerve electrode was designed for less invasive continuous vagus nerve stimulation and monitoring of the vocal fold electromyogram without disturbing the surgical procedure. The device was rectangular (13 mm × 9 mm), with two small round electrodes set on a flexible silicon plate and tube. The electrode was fully implantable during carotid endarterectomy and was positioned at the most distal site of the vagus nerve by suturing to the connective tissue without nerve dissection. All patients underwent laryngoscopy to assess postoperative vocal fold and pharyngeal wall palsy at one week after carotid endarterectomy. Results: Sudden loss of the vocal fold electromyogram was noted in two patients (during plaque removal and during arterial wall suture in one each). In these two patients, incomplete vocal fold and pharyngeal palsy was confirmed by laryngoscopy. The cause of vagus nerve injury may have been traction at the time of distal internal carotid artery manipulation. The vocal fold electromyogram remained normal during the operation in the other 72 patients. However laryngoscopy revealed postoperative vocal fold and pharyngeal palsy in six patients. These findings suggested that delayed vagus nerve injury can occur after carotid endarterectomy. Conclusion: The continuous vagus nerve monitoring may be worthwhile for elucidating the mechanism of vagus nerve injury related to carotid endarterectomy.

Herbicide-Resistant Mutations in Acetolactate Synthase Can Reduce Feedback Inhibition and Lead to Accumulation of Branched-Chain Amino Acids

The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) valine, leucine and isoleucine are essential amino acids that are critical for animal growth and development. Animals need to obtain BCAAs from their diet because they cannot synthesize them. Plants are the ultimate source of these amino acids. Acetolactate synthase (ALS) is the first common enzyme in the biosynthesis of BCAAs. The metabolic control of BCAA biosynthesis involves allosteric regulation of ALS by the end-products of the pathway, i.e., valine, leucine and isoleucine. ALS holoenzyme seems to consist of two large catalytic subunits and two small regulatory subunits. In a previous study, using homologous recombination dependent gene targeting we created rice plants in which W548Land S627I mutations were induced into the endogenous gene encoding the ALS catalytic subunit. These two amino acid substitutions conferred hypertolerance to the ALS-inhibiting herbicide bispyripac-sodium. In this study, we revealed that feedback regulation by valine and leucine was reduced by these two amino acid substitutions. Furthermore, in leaves and seeds of ALS mutants with W548Land/or S627I substitution, a 2- to 3-fold increase in BCAAs was detected. Our results suggest that the ALS catalytic subunit is also involved in feedback regulation of ALS, and that judicious modification of the regulatory and catalytic subunits of ALS-coding genes by gene targeting can lead to the efficient accumulation of BCAA in plants.

Development of Flexible Spherical Actuator with 3D Coordinate Measuring Device

Rehabilitation devices help to recover the physical abilities of patients. This study aims to develop a portable rehabilitation device that is safe to use when?patients are holding it by hands. In a previous study, to realize a home rehabilitation device, a flexible spherical actuator that can provide motion to patients was developed. In this study, to measure the relative position between both handling stages, a 3D coordinate measuring device using three wire-type linear potentiometers and an embedded controller was proposed and tested. In this paper, the spherical actuator with built-in 3D coordinate measuring device is described. The measuring method and experimental results obtained are also presented. The tracking position control of the actuator using the measuring device was carried out. As a result, the position of the handling stages can be successfully controlled using the feedback signal from the tested?measuring device.
