Data-driven modeling of power generation for a coal power plant under cycling

Increased penetration of renewables for power generation has negatively impacted the dynamics of conventional fossil fuel-based power *** power plants operating on the base load are forced to cycle,to adjust to the fluctuating power *** results in an inefficient operation of the coal power plants,which leads up to higher operating *** overcome such operational challenge associated with cycling and to develop an optimal process control,this work analyzes a set of models for predicting power ***,the power generation is intrinsically affected by the state of the power plant components,and therefore our model development also incorporates additional power plant process variables while forecasting the power *** present and compare multiple state-of-the-art forecasting data-driven methods for power generation to determine the most adequate and accurate *** also develop an interpretable attention-based transformer model to explain the importance of process variables during training and *** trained deep neural network(DNN)LStM model has good accuracy in predicting gross power generation under various prediction horizons with/without cycling events and outperforms the other models for long-term *** DNN memory-based models show significant superiority over other state-of-the-art machine learning models for short,medium and long range *** transformer-based model with attention enhances the selection of historical data for multi-horizon forecasting,and also allows to interpret the significance of internal power plant components on the power *** newly gained insights can be used by operation engineers to anticipate and monitor the health of power plant equipment during high cycling periods.

Distributional congruence of mammalian herbivores in the trans-Himalayan Mountains

Large-scale distribution and diversity patterns of mammalian herbivores, especially less charismatic species in alpine environments remain little understood. We studied distributional congruence of mammalian herbivores in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh to see if the distributions of less prominent and smaller herbivores can be determined from those of larger and more prominent herbivores like ungulates. Using a similarity index, we assessed shared distributions of species in 20x20 km2 grid-cells in an area of about 80,000 km2. We used the Unweighted Pair-Group Method with Arithmetic Average （UPGMA） to classify mammalian herbivores into groups with similar distributions. We then used the G-test of independence to look for statistical significance of the groups obtained. We identified six groups of mammalian herbivores with distributions more similar than ex- pected at random. the largest group was composed of nine species whereas the other large group comprised six species. Canonical Correspondence Analysis （CCA）, used to relate the groups with environmental features, showed that the largest group occurred in higher and flatter areas, while the other large group occurred in lower and steeper areas. Large herbivores like ungulates can be used as surrogate for less prominent small herbivores while identifying areas for latter＇s protection in the inaccessible mountainous re- gions of the trans-Himalaya [Current Zoology 59 （1）： 116-124, 2013].

Improving the quantification of waterfowl migration with remote sensing and bird tracking

Accurately quantifying waterfowl migration patterns is pertinent to monitor ecosystem health and control bird-borne infectious diseases. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the environmental mechanisms that drive waterfowl migration and then investigate the effect of intra- and inter-annual change in food supply and temperature(e.g., climate change) on their migration patterns. Recent advances in remote sensing and animal tracking techniques make it possible to monitor these environmental factors over a wide range of scales and record bird movements in detail. the synergy of these techniques will facilitate substantial progress in our understanding of the environmental drivers of bird migration. We identify prospects for future studies to test existing hypotheses and develop models integrating up-todate knowledge, high-resolution remote sensing data and high-accuracy bird tracking data. this will allow us to predict when waterfowl will be where, in response to shortand long-term global environmental change.

研究了面向嵌入式硬件平台的高速视频图像处理与高速目标跟踪算法。基于神经网络的光流场算法能有效减少程序对硬件系统的内存要求和运算要求,该算法能够比传统算法更加容易的应用于以DSP(数字信号处理)芯片为核心的嵌入式硬件平台中。首先设计了一个基于Hopfield神经网络控制器的自适应滤波器,以图像信噪比为控制指标,对需进行目标识别的视频图像进行图像预处理;然后,利用补偿模糊神经网络控制器对光流场计算方法进行优化,这是一种通过参数控制平滑度实现的平均速度的角度误差和标准角误差的CFNN(补偿模糊神经网络)控制器识别跟踪算法。微机仿真及嵌入式系统试验结果均表明:该算法能够在同等条件下显著提高目标辨别与跟踪能力,显示其具有较高的有效性和实用性。

Comparison of Extrapolation and Interpolation Methods for Estimating Daily Photosynthetically Active Radiation(PAR)——A Case Study of the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve,China

Measurements of photosynthetically active radiation （PAR）, which are indispensable for simulating plant growth and productivity, are generally very scarce. this study aimed to compare two extrapolation and one interpolation methods for estimating daily PAR reaching the earth surface within the Poyang Lake national nature reserve, China. the daily global solar radiation records at Nanchang meteorological station and daily sunshine duration measurements at nine meteorological stations around Poyang Lake were obtained to achieve the objective. two extrapolation methods of PARs using recorded and estimated global solar radiation at Nanchang station and three stations （Yongxiu, Xingzi and Duchang） near the nature reserve were carried out, respectively, and a spatial interpolation method combining triangulated irregular network （tIN） and inverse distance weighting （IDW） was imple- mented to estimate daily PAR. the performance evaluation of the three methods using the PARs measured at Dahuchi Conservation Station （day number of measurement = 105 days） revealed that：（1） the spatial interpolation method achieved the best PAR estima- tion （R2 - 0.89, s.c. = 0.99, F= 830.02, P 〈 0.001 ）; （2） the extrapolation method from Nanchang station obtained an unbiased result （R2 = 0.88, s.c. = 0.99, F = 745.29, P 〈 0.001）; however, （3） the extrapolation methods from Yongxiu, Xingzi and Duchang stations were not suitable for this specific site for their biased estimations. Considering the assumptions and principles supporting the extrapolation and interpolation methods, the authors conclude that the spatial interpolation method produces more reliable results than the extrapolation methods and holds the greatest potential in all tested methods, and more PAR measurements should be recorded to evaluate the seasonal, yearly and spatial stabilities of these models for their application to the whole nature reserve of Poyang Lake.

Experimental study on the tribo-chemical smoothening process between self-mated silicon carbide in a water-lubricated surfacecontact reciprocating test

Silicon carbide(SiC) can be tribo-chemically smoothened during a self-mated sliding procedure in the aqueous environment. As well reported in the point-contact tests, this smoothening process works well due to the abundant water as oxidant. After this smoothening process, the tribo-surface is well polished, a closely mated tribo-gap naturally forms, and an ultra-low friction state is built. However, water in the tribo-gap could be insufficient in industrial applications, e.g., the seal gap in mechanical seals. In this study, the tribo-chemical smoothening behavior in such environment was researched. A surface-contact reciprocating test was used to simulate the aqueous environment where water was insufficient. After tests, compared to the published results from the point-contact tests, the same ultra-low friction state was achieved. A part of the tribo-surface was tribo-chemically smoothened. the obtained smoothened surface microstructure was consistent with the published information. Meanwhile, severe abrasive wear occurred. A porous oxygen-rich layer was found existing beneath the abrasion-induced grooves, in which numerous smashed wear debris adhered on the worn surfaces. We concluded that the shortage of water initiated the severe abrasion, meanwhile the generated wear debris aggravated the wear condition. this understanding is instructive for developing new methods to avoid the severe abrasion in the same water insufficient environment.

Pancreatic cancer is a challenging disease for patients, doctors and researchers who for decades have searched for a cure for this deadly malignancy. Although existing mouse models of pancreatic cancer have shed light on the mecha- nistic basis of the neoplastic conversion of the pancreas, their impact in terms of offering new diagnostics and therapeu- tic modalities remains limited. Chronic pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas that is associated with a gradual damage of the organ and an increased risk of developing neoplastic lesions. In this review, we propose that detailed studies of chronic inflammatory processes in the pancreas will provide insights into the evolution of pancreatic cancer. this information may prove useful in the design of effective therapeutic strategies to battle the disease.
