Melatonin ameliorates experimental hepatic fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats

AIM:To investigate the protective effects of melatonin on carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced hepatic fibrosis in experimental ***:All rats were randomly divided into normal control group,model control group treated with CCl4 for 12 wk,CCl4+NAC group treated with CCl4+NAC(100 mg/kg,i.p.)for 12 wk,CCl4+MEL-1 group treated with CCl4+melatonin(2.5 mg/kg)for 12 wk,CCl4+MEL-2 group treated with CCl4+ melatonin(5.0 mg/kg)for 12 wk,and CCl4+MEL-3 group treated with CCl4+melatonin(10 mg/kg).Rats in the treatment groups were injected subcutaneously with sterile CCl4(3 mL/kg,body weight)in a ratio of 2:3 with olive oil twice a *** in normal control group received hypodermic injection of olive oil at the same dose and frequency as those in treatment *** the end of experiment,rats in each group were anesthetized and *** and eosin(HE)staining and Van Gieson staining were used to examine changes in liver *** activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST)and protein concentration weremeasured with routine laboratory methods using an ***(HYP)content in liver and malondialdehyde(MDA)and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)levels in liver homogenates were assayed by *** hyaluronic acid(HA),laminin(LN),and procollagenⅢN-terminal peptide(PⅢNP)were determined by ***:Pathologic grading showed that the fibrogenesis was much less severe in CCl4+MEL3 group than in model control group(u=2.172,P<0.05),indicating that melatonin(10 mg/kg)can significantly ameliorate CCl4-induced hepatic fibrotic *** serum levels of ALT and AST were markedly lower in CCl4+MEL treatment groups(5,10 mg/kg)than in model control group(ALT:286.23 ±121.91 U/L vs 201.15±101.16 U/L and 178.67 ±103.14 U/L,P=0.028,P=0.007;AST:431.00 ±166.35 U/L vs 321.23±162.48 U/L and 292.42 ±126.23 U/L,P=0.043,P=0.013).Similarly,the serum laminin(LN)and hyaluronic acid(HA)levels and hydroxyproli

Fast parallel algorithms for discrete Gabor expansion and transform based on multirate filtering

The Gabor transform has long been recognized as a very useful tool for the joint time and frequency analysis in signal *** real time applications,however,were limited due to the high computational complexity of the Gabor transform *** this paper,some novel and fast parallel algorithms for the finite discrete Gabor expansion and transform are presented based on multirate *** analysis filter bank is designed for the finite discrete Gabor transform(DGT)and a synthesis filter bank is designed for the finite discrete Gabor expansion(DGE).Each of the parallel channels in the two filter banks has a unified structure and can apply the FFT and the IFFT to reduce its computational *** computational complexity of each parallel channel does not change as the oversampling rate *** fact,it is very low and depends only on the length of the input discrete signal and the number of the Gabor frequency sampling *** computational complexity of the proposed parallel algorithms is analyzed and compared with that of the major existing parallel algorithms for the finite DGT and *** results indicate that the proposed parallel algorithms for the finite DGT and DGE based on multirate filtering are very attractive for real time signal processing.

Wear Performance of Laser Surface Hardened GCr15 Steel

In order to assess the new tribological properties of laser surface hardened GCr15 steel, the wear resistance between specimens treated with laser and those of conventionally hardened under dry sliding conditions was compared. The change of wear mechanisms in laser hardened GCr15 resulted in a distinct difference in wear rates. The results showed that quenched zones not only had sufficient depth of hardening and higher hardness, but had more retained austenite and finer carbides because of a higher degree of carbide dissolution. Laser surface hardened GCr15 steel specimens exhibited superior wear resistance to their conventionally hardened specimens due to the effects of the microstructure hardening, high hardness and toughness. The wear mechanism for both the laser quenched layer and conventionally hardened layer was highly similar, generally involving adhesive, material transfer, wear-induced oxidation and plowing. When conventionally hardened block specimens rubbed against the laser hardened specimens, the surface of conventionally hardened block specimens was polished. The microstructural thermal stability was increased after laser surface treatment.

The novel differential scanning calorimetry method for determining trapped water volume of human red blood cell during freezing process has been reexamined. Results show that the final erythrocyte volume is 53% of its isotonic volume after freezing to -40℃. An electronic particle counter (MultisizerTM III, Beckman Coulter Inc., USA) was used to measure cell volume changes in response to hypertonic solution. Using this approach, when extracellular solution was 3186 mOsm, the equilibrium cell volume was found to be 57% of its isotonic value. Both results indicate that 34%—40% of intracellular water is trapped and cannot respond to osmotic difference between intra- and extracellular solution. These findings are consistent with the published data: at least 20%—32% of the isotonic cell water volume is retained within RBCs during freezing. Some applications of the values of trapped water are addressed.

Alterations in circadian rhythms of melaton in and cortisol in patients with bronchial asthma

AIM: To investigate the possible relationships between alterations in circadian rhythm of melatonin, cortisol andbronchial asthma. METHODS: Salivary melatonin and cortisol were measured simultaneously by radioimmunoas-say in 10 mild intermittent or persistent patients, 11 moderate-to-severe persistent asthma patients, and 15 controlsubjects. Twelve salivary samples were collected in a series during a 24-h period in each subject. RESULTS: Theresults showed overall lower levels of salivary melatonin in asthma patients compared with control subject(P<0.01). The amplitude, peak-level, and baseline of salivary melatonin were significantly lower in mild intermit-tent or persistent (P<0.01, P<0.05) and moderate-to-severe persistent asthma patients (P<0.01) compared withcontrol group. The 24-h mean level of salivary cortisol was greatly lower and the acrophase was markedly delayedin patients with mild intermittent or persistent asthma (P<0.01) and moderate-to-severe persistent asthma (P<0.05, P<0.01) compared with control subject. CONCLUSION: Disordered circadian rhythms of salivary melato-nin and cortisol were found in asthma patients, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma.

On SS-quasinormal subgroups and the structure of finite groups

A subgroup H of a finite group G is said to be an SS-quasinormal subgroup of G if there is a subgroup B of G such that G = HB and H permutes with every Sylow subgroup of B. In this paper, we investigate the structure of a group under the assumption that every subgroup with order pm of a Sylow p-subgroup P of G is SS-quasinormal in G for a fixed positive integer m. Some interesting results related to the p-nilpotency and supersolvability of a finite group are obtained. For example, we prove that G is p-nilpotent if there is a subgroup D of P with 1 < |D| < |P| such that every subgroup of P with order |D| or 2|D| whenever p = 2 and |D| = 2 is SS-quasinormal in G, where p is the smallest prime dividing the order of G and P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G.

A new type electronic particle counter (EPC, MultisizerTM 3, Beckman Coulter Inc., USA) was used to determine the volumes of human red blood cells (RBCs) in NaCl solutions of different osmolalities. The thermodynamics model describing cell response during freezing process was used to simulate the volume change of RBC in 0.9% NaCl solution during equilibrium freezing process. It was assumed that the effect of temperature on cell volume can be neglected compared to that of osmolality, then by using the phase diagram for the binary system sodium chloride/water, the osmolalities of the NaCl solution under different sub-zero temperatures can be obtained (converted from mass concentration), then the calculated values of RBC volumes can be validated by the experiments.
