Background:Patients presenting with large surface area burns are common in our practice;however, patients with a secondary large burn on pre-existing burn scars and grafts are rare and not reported. Case presentation:We report on an unusual case of a patient sustaining a secondary large burn to areas previously injured by a burn from a different mechanism. We discuss the potential implications when managing a case like this and suggest potential biological reasons why the skin may behave differently. Our patient was a 33-year-old man who presented with a 5%TBSA burn on skin scarred by a previous 40%total body surface area (TBSA) burn and skin grafts. Initially assessed as superficial partial thickness in depth, the wounds were treated conservatively with dressings;however, they failed to heal and became infected requiring surgical management. Conclusions:Burns sustained in areas of previous burn scars and grafts may behave differently to normal patterns of healing, requiring more aggressive management and surgical intervention at an early stage.

Soil degradation, including rocky desertification,of the karst regions in China is severe. Karst landscapes are especially sensitive to soil degradation as carbonate rocks are nutrient-poor and easily eroded. Understanding the balance between soil formation and soil erosion is critical for long-term soil sustainability, yet little is known about the initial soil forming processes on karst terrain. Herein we examine the initial weathering processes of several types of carbonate bedrock containing varying amounts of non-carbonate minerals in the SPECTRA Critical Zone Observatory, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. We compared the weathering mechanisms of the bedrock to the mass transfer of mineral nutrients in a soil profile developed on these rocks and found that soil formation and nutrient contents are strongly dependent upon the weathering of interbedded layers of more silicate-rich bedrock(marls). Atmospheric inputs from dust were also detected.

Biochars produced from cotton gin waste(CG)and guayule bagasse(GB)were characterized and explored as potential adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals(sulfapyridine-SPY,docusate-DCT and erythromycin-ETM)from aqueous *** increase in biochar pyrolysis temperature from 350οC to 700℃ led to an increase in pH,specific surface area,and surface *** electronegative surface of all tested biochars indicated that non-Coulombic mechanisms were involved in adsorption of the anionic or uncharged pharmaceuticals under experimental *** adsorption capacities of Sulfapyridine(SPY),Docusate(DCT)and Erythromycin(ETM)on biochar were influenced by the contact time and solution pH,as well as biochar specific surface area and functional *** of these pharmaceutical compounds was dominated by a complex interplay of three mechanisms:hydrophobic partitioning,hydrogen bonding andπ-πelectron donor-acceptor(EDA)*** weakerπ-πEDA interactions,reduced hydrophobicity of SPY−and increased electrostatic repulsion between anionic SPY−and the electronegative CG biochar surface at higher pH,the adsorption of SPY unexpectedly increased from 40% to 70% with an increase in pH from 7 to *** alkaline conditions,adsorption was dominated by the formation of strong negative charge-assisted H-bonding between the sulfonamide moiety of SPY and surface carboxylic *** seemed to be no appreciable and consistent differences in the extent of DCT and ETM adsorption as the pH *** suggest the CG and GB biochars could act as effective adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals from reclaimed water prior to *** surface area biochars with physico-chemical properties(e.g.,presence of functional groups,high cation and anion exchange capacities)conducive to strong interactions with polar-nonpolar functionality of pharmaceuticals could be used to achieve significant contaminant removal from water.

Due to growing social acceptance,there has been an increasing number of gender-affirmation surgeries performed in North *** research in this patient population focuses on surgical outcomes and advancing ***,little work has been done to study functional *** better evaluate urinary dysfunction in the postphalloplasty trans men patient population,our group developed a novel patient-reported outcome instrument-the postphalloplasty urinary function test(PP UFT)and protocol to measure postvoid urethral volume(PVUR),and we present our preliminary *** conducted a cross-sectional pilot study in a cohort of 15 adult trans men who had undergone phalloplasty with urethral lengthening surgery between 2018 and *** had stable urinary function via the neophallus at the time of *** filled out the PP UFT and were asked to record their PVUR as per our *** average PP UFT score was 8.9 out of 40 and the average quality-of-life(QOL)score was *** dribbling constituted the major complaint and on average comprised 63.2%of the reported PP UFT *** average PVUR was 2.2 ml(range:0.5-5.6 ml).There was a positive correlation between higher PP UFT and worse-reported quality of life(P<0.01;R?=0.4).Current questionnaires accepted in cis-male urology have limitations for accurately capturing urinary dysfunction in this specific patient *** combination of PP UFT and PVUR measurement offers potential for quantifying urinary function and quality of life in patients who undergo *** studies will validate these instruments.

The B cell antigen receptor （BCR） is the sensor on the B cell surface that surveys foreign molecules （antigen） in our bodies and activates B cells to generate antibody responses upon encountering cognate antigen. The binding of antigen to the BCR induces signaling cascades in the cytoplasm, which provides the first signal for B cell activation. Subsequently, BCRs internalize and target bound antigen to endosomes, where antigen is processed into T cell recognizable forms. T helper cells generate the second activation signal upon binding to antigen presented by B cells. The optimal activation of B cells requires both signals, thereby depending on the coordination of BCR signaling and antigen transport functions. Antigen binding to the BCR also induces rapid remodeling of the cortical actin network of B cells. While being initiated and controlled by BCR signaling, recent studies reveal that this actin remodeling is critical for both the signaling and antigen processing functions of the BCR, indicating a role for actin in coordinating these two pathways. Here we will review previous and recent studies on actin reorganization during BCR activation and BCR- mediated antigen processing, and discuss how actin remodeling translates BCR signaling into rapid antigen uptake and processing while providing positive and negative feedback to BCR signaling.

Inflammation of the nervous system(neuroinflammation)is now recognized as a hallmark of virtually all neurological *** neuroinflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis,there is prominent infiltration and a long-lasting representation of various leukocyte subsets in the central nervous system(CNS)*** in classic neurodegenerative disorders,where such immense inflammatory infiltrates are absent,there is still evidence of activated CNS-intrinsic *** consequences of excessive and uncontrolled neuroinflammation are injury and death to neural elements,which manifest as a heterogeneous set of neurological ***,it is now readily acknowledged,due to instructive studies from the peripheral nervous system and a large body of CNS literature,that aspects of the neuroinflammatory response can be beneficial for CNS *** recognized benefits of inflammation to the CNS include the preservation of CNS constituents(neuroprotection),the proliferation and maturation of various neural precursor populations,axonal regeneration,and the reformation of myelin on denuded ***,we highlight the benefits of neuroinflammation in fostering CNS recovery after neural injury using examples from multiple sclerosis,traumatic spinal cord injury,stroke,and Alzheimer’s *** focus on CNS regenerative responses,such as neurogenesis,axonal regeneration,and remyelination,and discuss the mechanisms by which neuroinflammation is pro-regenerative for the ***,we highlight treatment strategies that harness the benefits of neuroinflammation for CNS regenerative responses.
