Population survey and conservation assessment of the globally threa- tened cheer pheasant （Catreus wallicht） in Jhelum Valley, Azad Kas- hmir, Pakistan

The cheer pheasant Catreus wallichi is a globally threatened species that inhabits the western Himalayas. Though it is well established that the species is threatened and its numbers declining, updated definitive estimates are lacking, so in 2011, we conducted a survey to assess the density, population size, and threats to the species in Jhelum valley, Azad Kashmir, which holds the largest known population of cheer pheasants in Pakistan. We conducted dawn call count surveys at 17 points clustered in three survey zones of the valley, 11 of which had earlier been used for a 2002-2003 survey of the birds. Over the course of our survey, 113 birds were recorded. Mean density of cheer pheasant in the valley was estimated at 11.8±6.47 pairs per km2, with significant differences in terms of both counts and estimated density of cheer were significantly different across the three survey zones, with the highest in the Chinari region and the lowest, that is the area with no recorded sightings of the pheasants, in Gari Doppata. The total breeding population of cheer pheasants is estimated to be some 2 490 pairs, though this does not consider the actual area of occupancy in the study area. On the whole, more cheer pheasants were recorded in this survey than from the same points in 2002-2003, indicating some success in population growth. Unfortunately, increasing human settlement, fires, livestock grazing, hunting, and the collection of non-timber forest products continue to threaten the population of cheer in the Jhelum valley. To mitigate these potential impacts, some degree of site protection should be required for the conservation of cheer pheasants in Pakistan, and more effective monitoring of the species is clearly needed.

Range extension of four highland agamid lizards in Shimshal Pamir,Pakistan

As part of the Sino-Pak trans-boundary cooperation for conservation and sustainable development in Pamir border region, World Wild Fund （WWF）-Pakistan conducted a preliminary social, economic and ecological survey in the ShimshaI-Pamir Lakes area in July 2009. The purpose of the study was to explore potentials and opportunities for future collaborative conservation of some species, habitats and high altitude ecosystems in the border region between China and Pakistan. The two-week herpetological study in the Shimshal Pamir area of Khunjerab National Park （KNP） along Pakistan-China border was an integral part of the survey, conducted exclu- sively to document reptilian fauna with a special emphasis on investigating their occurrence, distribution and status in the study area. Field investigations were performed during daytime when it was hot enough and reptiles were active, basking or feeding. A total of 15 specimens belonging to four species of the Agamidae family were captured by striking stones and beating bushes with sticks. Collected specimens were preserved using 10% formalin solution, tagged with field information and stored in Zoological Survey Department, Karachi for future reference. Laboratory investigations were carried out for pholidosic counts and morphometric measurements. A detailed review of relevant literature, habitat characteristics and laboratory investigations revealed the occurrence of Laudakia himalayana, L. pakistanica, L. tuberculata and L. badakhshana at 4,082 m, 4,172 m, 4,005 m and 4,240 m asl, respectively, which are much higher altitudes as compared to the previously reported heights of 3,353 m, 3,200 m, 2,500 m and 2,400 m asl. The terrain offers a variety of ecological barriers, in the form of fast and freezing running waters and massive glaciers with peculiar harsh climatic conditions prevailing for nine months of the year, which restricts species migration and thus increases endemism. Comparison and Analysis of Heat Transfer and Inflow Rate for Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Based on Different Tubes

This paper is ***,the effect of non-linear thermophysical property variation was presented using supercritical carbon dioxide(SCO_(2))around the thermodynamic pivotal *** second part exhibits an experimental examination of the heat transfer(HT)behaviour of SCO_(2) in a helical tube with a hydraulic diameter of 2 mm at different mass fluxes(MF),heat fluxes(HF),and pressures(P).The experiments were carried out based on various pressures,mass fluxes,and heat fluxes for both ***_(2) was cooled in a 2 mm diameter serpentine tube made of copper *** experimental results showed that HT degradation could happen under the circumstances of a change in HF and MF and have significant effects on fluid inflow and HT ***,buoyancy plays an essential and influential role in the HT *** increasing the pressure value,the HT parameters decrease when the pressure reaches 8 MPa,and the flotation value is more significant,which means a decrease in the HT ***,under the system circumstances,the HT value decreases with the increase in heat flux and pressure and increases with the increment in MF.

IDH knockdown alters foraging behavior in the termite Odontotermes formosanus in different social contexts

Foraging,as an energy-consuming behavior,is very important for colony survival in *** energy metabolism related to glucose decomposition and adenosine triphosphate(ATP)production influences foraging behavior in termites is still ***,we analyzed the change in energy metabolism in the whole organism and brain after silencing the key metabolic gene isocitrate dehydrogenase(IDH)and then investigated its impact on foraging behavior in the subterranean termite Odontotermes formosanus in different social *** IDH gene exhibited higher expression in the abdomen and head of *** knockdown of IDH resulted in metabolic disorders in the whole *** dsIDH-injected workers showed significantly reduced walking activity but increased foraging ***,IDH knockdown altered brain energy metabolism,resulting in a decline in ATP levels and an increase in IDH ***,the social context affected brain energy metabolism and,thus,altered foraging behavior in *** found that the presence of predator ants increased the negative influence on the foraging behavior of dsIDH-injected workers,including a decrease in foraging ***,an increase in the number of nestmate soldiers could provide social buffering to relieve the adverse effect of predator ants on worker foraging *** orthogonal experiments further verified that the role of the IDH gene as an inherent factor was dominant in manipulating termite foraging behavior compared with external social contexts,suggesting that energy metabolism,especially brain energy metabolism,plays a crucial role in regulating termite foraging behavior.

Recently,Opportunistic Networks(OppNets)are considered to be one of the most attractive developments of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks that have arisen thanks to the development of intelligent *** are characterized by a rough and dynamic topology as well as unpredictable contacts and contact *** is forwarded and stored in intermediate nodes until the next opportunity ***,achieving a high delivery ratio in OppNets is a challenging *** is imperative that any routing protocol use network resources,as far as they are available,in order to achieve higher network *** this article,we introduce the Resource-Aware Routing(ReAR)protocol which dynamically controls the buffer usage with the aim of balancing the load in resource-constrained,stateless and non-social *** ReAR protocol invokes our recently introduced mutual informationbased weighting approach to estimate the impact of the buffer size on the network performance and ultimately to regulate the buffer consumption in real *** proposed routing protocol is proofed conceptually and simulated using the Opportunistic Network Environment *** show that the ReAR protocol outperforms a set of well-known routing protocols such as EBR,Epidemic MaxProp,energy-aware Spray and Wait and energy-aware PRoPHETin terms of message delivery ratio and overhead ratio.

Forest Cover Change Assessment in Conflict-affected Areas of Northwest Pakistan: the Case of Swat and Shangla Districts

This study examines the spatial and temporal forest cover changes in Swat and Shangla districts to understand the deforestation pattern in context of the recent security conflict in these districts. We used multi-resolution satellite images to assess the long term deforestation from 2001 to 2009 and also to identify episodic forest cutting areas appeared during the conflict period of Oct. 2007 - Oct. 2008. There are only 58 ha of deforestation identified during the conflict period while 1268 ha of gross annual deforestation were assessed during last eight years. Most of the deforestation patches persist around the administrative boundaries at sub-district levels (tehsils) which can be attributed to ambiguity in unclear jurisdiction between the forest official. The results highlight that the forest cutting appeared in Swat and Shangla during the conflict period is not as significant when compared with the long term deforestation pattern in the area. On the one side the results of the study are supportive to the picture that emerges from international studies which report high rate of deforestation in the country and on the other side it negates any relation between the security situation and the increasing deforestation in the north western Pakistan. The study concludes that deforestation assessments require verification by independent sources of data, such as satellite imagery to improve our understanding of deforestation processes.
