Role of seed size, phenology, oogenesis and host distribution in the specificity and genetic structure of seed weevils (Curculio spp.) in mixed forests

Synchrony between seed growth and oogenesis is suggested to largely shape trophic breadth of seed-feeding insects and ultimately to contribute to their co-existence by means of resource partitioning or in the time when infestation *** we investigated:(i)the role of seed phenology and sexual maturation of females in the host specificity of seed-feeding weevils(Curculio spp.)predating in hazel and oak mixed forests;and(ii)the consequences that trophic breadth and host distribution have in the genetic structure of the weevil *** analyses were used to establish unequivocally host specificity and to determine the population genetic *** identified 4 species with different specificity,namely Curculio nucum females matured earlier and infested a unique host(hazelnuts,Corylus avellana)while 3 species(Curculio venosus,Curculio glandium and Curculio elephas)predated upon the acorns of the 2 oaks(Quercus ilex and Quercus pubescens).The high specificity of *** coupled with a more discontinuous distribution of hazel trees resulted in a significant genetic structure among *** addition,the presence of an excess of local rare haplotypes indicated that *** populations went through genetic expansion after recent ***,these effects were not observed in the more generalist Curculio glandium predating upon ***,co-existence of weevil species in this multi-host-parasite system is influenced by both resource and time *** what extent the restriction in gene flow among *** populations may have negative consequences for their persistence in a time of increasing disturbances(*** in Mediterranean areas)deserves further research.

BACKGROUND:Unsustained return of spontaneous circulation(ROSC)is a critical barrier to survival in cardiac arrest *** study examined whether end-tidal carbon dioxide(ETCO_(2))and pulse oximetry photoplethysmogram(POP)parameters can be used to identify unsustained ***:We conducted a multicenter observational prospective cohort study of consecutive patients with cardiac arrest from 2013 to ***’general information,ETCO_(2),and POP parameters were collected and statistically ***:The included 105 ROSC episodes(from 80 cardiac arrest patients)comprised 51 sustained ROSC episodes and 54 unsustained ROSC *** 24-hour survival rate was significantly higher in the sustained ROSC group than in the unsustained ROSC group(29.2%vs.9.4%,Plogistic regression analysis showed that the difference between after and before ROSC in ETCO_(2)(ΔETCO_(2))and the difference between after and before ROCS in area under the curve of POP(ΔAUCp)were independently associated with sustained ROSC(odds ratio[OR]=0.931,95%confi dence interval[95%CI]0.881-0.984,P=0.011 and OR=0.998,95%CI 0.997-0.999,Plue for unsustained ROSC.

Skin cancer is one of themost severe diseases,andmedical imaging is among themain tools for cancer *** images provide information on the evolutionary stage,size,and location of tumor *** paper focuses on the classification of skin lesion images considering a framework of four experiments to analyze the classification performance of Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs)in distinguishing different skin *** CNNs are based on transfer learning,taking advantage of ImageNet ***,in each experiment,different workflow stages are tested,including data augmentation and fine-tuning *** CNN models based on DenseNet-201,Inception-ResNet-V2,and Inception-V3 are proposed and compared using the HAM10000 *** results obtained by the three models demonstrate accuracies of 98%,97%,and 96%,***,the best model is tested on the ISIC 2019 dataset showing an accuracy of 93%.The proposed methodology using CNN represents a helpful tool to accurately diagnose skin cancer disease.

Blockchain-Based System for Secure and Efficient Cross-Border Remittances: A Potential Alternative to SWIFT

This paper proposes a blockchain-based system as a secure, efficient, and cost-effective alternative to SWIFT for cross-border remittances. The current SWIFT system faces challenges, including slow settlement times, high transaction costs, and vulnerability to fraud. leveraging blockchain technology’s decentralized, transparent, and immutable nature, the proposed system aims to address these limitations. Key features include modular architecture, implementation of microservices, and advanced cryptographic protocols. The system incorporates Proof of Stake consensus with BlS signatures, smart contract execution with dynamic pricing, and a decentralized oracle network for currency conversion. A sophisticated risk-based authentication system utilizes Bayesian networks and machine learning for enhanced security. Mathematical models are presented for critical components, including transaction validation, currency conversion, and regulatory compliance. Simulations demonstrate potential improvements in transaction speed and costs. However, challenges such as regulatory hurdles, user adoption, scalability, and integration with legacy systems must be addressed. The paper provides a comparative analysis between the proposed blockchain system and SWIFT, highlighting advantages in transaction speed, costs, and security. Mitigation strategies are proposed for key challenges. Recommendations are made for further research into scaling solutions, regulatory frameworks, and user-centric designs. The adoption of blockchain-based remittances could significantly impact the financial sector, potentially disrupting traditional models and promoting financial inclusion in underserved markets. However, successful implementation will require collaboration between blockchain innovators, financial institutions, and regulators to create an enabling environment for this transformative system.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: Risk factors, screening, and early detection

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, with over 38000 deaths in 2013. The opportunity to detect pancreatic cancer while it is still curable is dependent on our ability to identify and screen high-risk populations before their symptoms arise. Risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer include multiple genetic syndromes as well as modifiable risk factors. Genetic conditions include hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, lynch Syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome, familial atypical multiple mole melanoma syndrome, hereditary pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and ataxia-telangiectasia; having a genetic predisposition can raise the risk of developing pancreatic cancer up to 132-fold over the general population. Modifiable risk factors, which include tobacco exposure, alcohol use, chronic pancreatitis, diet, obesity, diabetes mellitus, as well as certain abdominal surgeries and infections, have also been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer development. Several largevolume centers have initiated such screening protocols, and consensus-based guidelines for screening high-riskgroups have recently been published. The focus of this review will be both the genetic and modifiable risk factors implicated in pancreatic cancer, as well as a review of screening strategies and their diagnostic yields.

Prospect of vapor phase catalytic H2O2 production by oxidation of water

Vapor phase catalytic hydrogen peroxide production by oxidation of water is possible by coupling the reaction with oxidation of an organic sacrificial reductant. It is potentially a safer process than direct synthesis from H2 and O2. Based on mechanistic information available mostly for liquid phase catalytic processes, feasible reaction mechanisms for such coupled reactions are proposed based on which desirable catalyst properties are identified. It is found that the surface-adsorbed oxygen bond is an important parameter for identifying desirable catalysts. Thermodynamics can be used to identify the types of organic oxidation reactions that can couple with water oxidation such that H2O2 formation becomes thermodynamically favorable. Reactions such as epoxidation of alkenes and selective oxidation of alkanes to alcohols cannot provide sufficient thermodynamic driving force, whereas oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and to acids can. Finally, further research is suggested to identify catalytic properties important for H2O2 decomposition and for coupling selective oxidation of organic compounds to oxidation of H2O in order to facilitate development of H2O2 production coupled with selective organic oxidation.

Tuning the electrons at the laAlO_3/SrTiO_3 interface: From growth to beyond growth

Recently, the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas （q2DEG） confined at the interface between laAlO3 and SrTiO3 has attracted significant attention. In this paper, we briefly review experimental methods that have been used to tune the carrier density and mobility of this q2DEG. These methods can be classified into two categories： growth-related tuning （i.e. substrate, growth temperature, oxygen pressure, post-annealing, laAlO3 thickness, stoichiometry, and capping layers） and post-growth tuning （i.e. electrostatic field gating, conductive atomic force microscopy and surface adsorbates）. Taken together, these methods enable the broad tuning of the electronic properties of this interface.
