The Arctic,an essential ecosystem on Earth,is subj.ct to pronounced anthropogenic pressures,most notable being the climate change and risks of crude oil *** crucial elements of Arctic environments,benthic microbiomes are involved in climate-relevant biogeochemical cycles and hold the potential to remediate upcoming ***,the Arctic benthic microbiomes are among the least explored biomes on the *** we combined geochemical analyses,incubation experiments,and microbial community profiling to detail the biogeography and biodegradation potential of Arctic sedimentary microbiomes in the northern Barents *** results revealed a predominance of bacterial and archaea phyla typically found in the deep marine biosphere,such as Chloroflexi,Atribacteria,and *** topmost benthic communities were spatially structured by sedimentary organic carbon,lacking a clear distinction among geographic *** increasing sediment depth,the community structure exhibited stratigraphic variability that could be correlated to redox geochemistry of *** benthic microbiomes harbored multiple taxa capable of oxidizing hydrocarbons using aerobic and anaerobic *** of surface sediments with crude oil led to proliferation of several genera from the so-called rare *** include Alkalimarinus and Halioglobus,previously unrecognized as hydrocarbon-degrading genera,both harboring the full genetic potential for aerobic alkane *** findings increase our understanding of the taxonomic inventory and functional potential of unstudied benthic microbiomes in the Arctic.

Healthy cartilage is a water-filled super lubricious *** type II provides it structural stability,and proteoglycans absorb water to keep the cartilage in a swollen condition,providing it the ability to creep and provide weeping ***(OA)is a degenerative and debilitating disorder of diarthrodial j.ints,where articular cartilage damage originates from enzymatic degradation and mechanical damage(wear).The obj.ctive of this research is to observe the level of cartilage damage present in knee arthroplasty patients and to understand the friction and creep behavior of enzymatically degraded bovine cartilage in ***(Lat)and medial(Med)condylar cartilages from OA patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty showed signs of enzymatic degradation and mechanical *** cartilages were exposed to collagenase III and chondroitinase ABC to degrade collagen and proteoglycans,*** loss of proteoglycans or collagen network and morphological changes were observed through histology and the atomic force microscope(AFM),respectively.A significant effect on creep due to enzymatic treatment was not *** the enzymatic treatment was found to significantly decrease the coefficient of friction(COF)at 4 N,while higher COF was shown from chondroitinase ABC degraded cartilage at 40 *** III treatment leads to the release of intact proteoglycans at the sliding interface,while chondroitinase ABC treatment leads to the loss of chondroitin sulfate(CS)from the *** ABC-digested bovine cartilage mimicked patient samples the best because of the similar distributions of proteoglycans,collagen network,and friction behavior.

A new record of the homalopsid snake, Gerarda prevostiana is presented from a mangrove-dominated patch in the vicinity of Kampung Bako, Sarawak, East Malaysia, and this comprises the first published record from the Sundaic Island of Borneo. A possible second locality for the species is a ca. 6.68 km site to its northeast, Kampung Buntal, based on an unlocated museum specimen. The species is widespread in mainland Southeast Asia, with additional records to the west （the Indian Subcontinent） and east （the Philippines Archipelago）, but was previously unrecorded from the islands of the Sundas. The secretive habits of the species, including the occupancy of mud lobster （Thalassinia spp.） mounds in mostly inaccessible, swampy habitats may be a reason for its perceived rarity and few published records.

AIM： To evaluate the mechanism underlying the effects of 5-Fluorouracil （5-FU） on adenoviral infection. METHODS： Low and high Coxsackievirus-Adenovirus Receptor （CAR） expressing human colon carcinoma cell lines were treated with 5-FU and two El-deleted adenoviral constructs, one transferring GFP （Ad/CMV- GFP） the other bax （Ad/CEA-bax）. The number of infected cells were monitored by GFP expression. To evaluate the effects of 5-FU in a receptor free system, Ad/GFP were encapsulated in liposomes and treated with 5-FU. Ad/GFP release was estimated with PCR and infection of 293 cells with the supernatant. Electron microscopy of the Ad5-GFP-liposome complex was made to investigate morphological changes of the liposomes after 5-FU. RESULTS： Infection rates of all cell lines increased from 50% to 98% with emerging 5-FU concentrations. The enhanced viral uptake was independent of the CAR expression. Additionally, 5-FU treated liposomes released 2-2.5 times more adenoviruses. Furthermore, 5-FU- treated liposomes appeared irregular and porous-like. CONCLUSION： adenoviral uptake is enhanced in the presence of 5-FU irrespective of CAR and is associated with morphological changes in membranes making the combination of both a promising option in gene therapy.

The timing of flowering(FL)and leaf unfolding(LU)determine plants’reproduction and vegetative *** warming has substantially advanced FL and LU of temperate and boreal plants,but their responses to warming differ,which may influence the time interval between FL and LU(ΔLU-FL),thereby impacting plant fitness and intraspecific physiological *** on twigs collected from two flowering-first tree species,Populus tomentosa and Amygdalus triloba,we conducted a manipulative experiment to investigate the effects of winter chilling,spring warming and photoperiod on theΔ*** found that photoperiod did not affect theΔLU-FL of Amygdalus triloba,but shortenedΔLU-FL by 5.1 d of Populus ***,spring warming and winter chilling oppositely affected theΔLU-FL of both ***,low chilling accumulation extended theΔLU-FL by 3.8 and 9.4 d for Populus tomentosa and Amygdalus triloba,but spring warming shortened theΔLU-FL by 4.1 and 0.2 d℃^(-1).Our results indicate that climate warming will decrease or increase theΔLU-FL depending on the warming periods,i.e.,spring or *** shifted time interval between flowering and leaf unfolding may have ecological effects including affecting pollen transfer efficiency and alter the structure and functioning of terrestrial ecosystem.

Pedogenesis along chronosequences has received attention from soil scientists for decades,following the pioneering work of Walker and Syers(1976),who showed a general pattern of the availability of nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)subsequently confirmed for a range of chronosequences(Huggett 1998;Turner and Condron 2013;Vitousek and Farrington 1997).Much more recently,changes of plant nutrient-acquisition strategies with soil development have drawn attention,first with a conceptual model(Lambers et al.2008),which was subsequently confirmed with solid experimental data collected along the j.rien Bay chronosequence in south-western Australia(Zemunik et al.2015).The original conceptual model has since been amended,to explain why presumably less-effective mycorrhizal P-acquisition strategies coexist with more-effective strategies based on the release carboxylates(organic anions)(Lambers et al.2018).Mycorrhizas may not be effective at acquiring P from severely P-impoverished soils,but they do boost the defence against pathogens,which strongly affect the growth of non-mycorrhizal carboxylate-releasing Proteaceae(Albornoz et al.2017;Lalibertéet al.2015).What has received little or no attention is the P-acquisition strategies of species that are the first to colonize the bare regolith of the earliest stage of chronosequences(Figs 1 and 2).When the soil P availability is relatively high such as along the j.rien Bay chronosequence(Turner et al.2018),there is little point searching for specialized strategies,but along many chronosequences,*** the case(Egli et al.2012;Richardson et al.2004;Zhou et al.2019).
