Anti-spermatogenic Effects of Ethanol Extract of Mucuna Urens

Objective To investigate the age-long claim by the locales that the food thickener, M. urens seed, has antispermatogenic, hence, antifertility effects in man. Methods Eight-week old male Albino rats were used as the mammalian model for this study. They were assigned to four groups of 6 rats each and treatment with the ethanol extract was for a period of 14 d. The treatment regimes were 70 mg/kg, 140 mg/kg, 210 mg/kg and 0 mg/kg BW in groups A, B, c and D, respectively. Extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extraction using 80% ethanol as the extracting solvent. The stock solution was prepared by dissolving 1 g of the paste extract in 10 ml corn oil （vehicle） to make up 100 mg/ml concentration. At the end of the treatment, sperm from the distal caudal epididymis was collected and analyzed for sperm count, sperm motility and sperm morphology. Results Significant reduction was observed in sperm count and sperm motility （P〈0.05）. The mean sperm count for group A was 6.27±0.02×10^6, for group B was 6.16±0.02×10^6 and group c had 6.0±0.0×10^6 sperm cells The control （group D） had a mean sperm count of 6.50±0.09×10^6 which was higher than that of any treated group. Results of the sperm motility test gave the following mean rates for motile sperm cells after treatment： group A, 57.6±% 2.1; group B, 50.0±4.0; group c, 45.0±4.0. The control had the highest mean motility rate of 72.3±2.1. The observed sperm abnormalities included unusual head with large acrosome, looped tailpiece, mid piece with distal droplet, pin head, pyriform head and long *** The anti-spermatogenic effects of the extract on the sperm in the Albino rat may lead to reduction of fertility.

chronic wounds affect over 6.5 million Americans and are notoriously difficult to *** oxygenation of the wound bed is one of the most critical and treatable wound management factors,but existing oxygenation systems do not enable concurrent measurement and delivery of oxygen in a convenient wearable ***,we developed a low-cost alternative for continuous O 2 delivery and sensing comprising of an inexpensive,paper-based,biocompatible,flexible platform for locally generating and measuring oxygen in a wound *** platform takes advantage of recent developments in the fabrication of flexible microsystems including the incorporation of paper as a substrate and the use of a scalable manufacturing technology,inkjet ***,we demonstrate the functionality of the oxygenation patch,capable of increasing oxygen concentration in a gel substrate by 13%(5ppm)in *** platform is able to sense oxygen in a range of 5–26 *** vivo studies demonstrate the biocompatibility of the patch and its ability to double or triple the oxygen level in the wound bed to clinically relevant levels.

野生动物行为节律常常是其对环境变化的一种行为适应。黑颈鹤(Grus nigricollis)越冬期会利用固定夜栖地,形成每天早晨飞出觅食,傍晚飞回夜栖的固定行为模式。为探索这一固定行为模式在越冬不同时期的变化及其影响因素,利用瞬时扫描法对草海湿地全部7个固定夜栖地的黑颈鹤飞出和飞回夜栖地准确时间及飞出之前和飞回之后在夜栖地的行为节律进行了观察。并且保证越冬前期(11月9日至12月31日)、中期(1月1日至2月21)和后期(2月22日至3月31日)3个阶段的调查时间分别不低于15 d。结果表明,越冬不同时期黑颈鹤飞出夜栖地时间差异极显著(F=23.38,P<0.01),飞回夜栖地时间存在显著性差异(F=3.51,P<0.05)。整个越冬期,黑颈鹤飞出夜栖地时间在中期延后,而到后期则更为提前,越冬前期、中期和后期飞出夜栖地的平均时间分别为7:34时、7:40时和7:13时;而飞回夜栖地时间逐渐延后,平均时间由前期的17:12时,至中期的17:40时和后期的18:15时。黑颈鹤飞出夜栖地之前的行为在越冬前期、中期和后期差异极显著(F=1 768.25,df=12,P<0.01),飞回夜栖地之后的行为在前期、中期和后期差异亦极显著(F=793.98,df=12,P<0.01)。越冬前期、中期和后期,黑颈鹤飞出夜栖地之前的行为与飞回夜栖地之后的行为均差异极显著(前期F=2 723.16,df=6,P<0.01;中期F=1 979.48,df=6,P<0.01;后期F=5 098.18,df=6,P<0.01)。黑颈鹤在飞出夜栖地前的80 min内,其行为以保养(34.32%)和休息(32.38%)为主;而飞回夜栖地后的90 min内,以觅食(43.04%)和休息(23.68%)为主。飞出时刻与日出时刻呈显著强相关(r=0.832,n=48,P<0.01),飞回时刻与日落时刻呈弱相关(r=0.353,n=47,P<0.01)。日出时间与黑颈鹤飞出夜栖地的时间的差值(Y1)受飞离时的空气湿度(W)影响,二者成反比,Y1=0.469﹣0.625W,P<0.05。黑颈鹤飞回夜栖地时刻与日落时刻的差值(Y2)受当天平均温度(T)的影响较为显著,Y2=1.231﹣0.107T,P<0.05,当天平均温度越高黑颈鹤飞回夜栖地时间越早,温度越低,黑颈鹤飞回夜栖地的时间越晚。研究结果对于进一步探讨黑颈鹤完整夜栖行为及其对干扰的适应性具有重要意义。

Plasma-polymerized pericyte patches improve healing of murine wounds through increased angiogenesis and reduced inflammation

Pericytes have the potential to be developed as a cell therapy for the treatment of wounds;however,the efficacy of any cell therapy relies on the successful delivery of intact and functioning ***,the effect of delivering pericytes on wound repair was assessed alongside the development of a surface-functionalized pericyte *** polymerization(PP)was used to functionalize the surface of silicone patches with heptylamine(HA)or acrylic acid(AA)*** pericytes were subsequently delivered to murine excisional wounds by intradermal injection or using the pericyte-laden patches and the comparative effects on wound healing,inflammation and revascularization *** AA surface provided the superior transfer of the cells to de-epidermized *** murine wounds treated either with pericytes injected directly into the wound or with the pericyte-laden AA patches showed improved healing with decreased neutrophil infiltration and reduced numbers of macrophages in the *** delivery also enhanced angiogenesis through a mechanism independent of VEGF ***,when delivered to wounds,improved healing responses by dampening inflammation and promoting *** of pericytes using PP-AA-functionalized patches was equally as effective as direct injection of pericytes into ***-functionalized dressings may therefore be a clinically relevant approach for the treatment of wounds.

Relation between self-recalled childhood physical activity and adult physical activity: The women’s health initiative

Background: Evidence suggests that childhood physical activity may play a role in the etiology and prevention of adult chronic diseases. Because researchers must often depend on self-recalled physical activity data many years after the exposure, it is important to understand factors which may influence adult recall of childhood physical activity. This study evaluated the influence of adult characteristics on reported childhood physical activity and the association between adult physical activity and self-recalled childhood physical activity. Methods: 48,066 post-menopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study reported their physical activity level during ages 5-9, 10-14, and 15-19. Results: In this cohort, over 65% of the population reported the same category of physical activity over the three childhood age groups. While higher levels of childhood physical activity were significantly associated with higher adult physical activity, this association varied by race/ethnicity, education, smoking, body mass index, history of diabetes or cardiovascular disease, social support and physical functional status. Women who were consistently highly active reported adult physical activity levels that were 2.82 MET-hr/week (95% c.I. = 2.43, 3.20) higher compared to women who were always physically inactive during childhood. conclusions: It is important for researchers to understand the influence of adult characteristics on reported childhood physical activity.
