The realization of hybrid optics could be one of the best ways to fulfll the technological requirements of compact,light-weight,and multi-functional optical systems for modern *** diffractive lens(PDL)such as diffractive lenses,photonsieves,and metasurfaces can be patterned on ultra-thin flexible and stretchable substrates and be conformally attached on top of arbitrarily shaped *** this review,we introduce recent research works addressed to the design and manufacturing of ultra-thin graphene optics,which will open new markets in compact and light-weight optics for next-generation endoscopic brain imaging,space internet,real-time surface proflometry,and multi-functional mobile *** provide higher design flexibility,lower process complexity,and chemical-free process with reasonable investment cost,direct laser writing(DLW)of laser-induced-graphene(LIG)is actively being applied to the patterning of *** realizing the best optical performances in DLW,photon-material interactions have been studied in detail with respect to different laser parameters;the resulting optical characteristics have been evaluated in terms of amplitude and phase.A series of exemplary laser-written 1D and 2D PDL structures have been actively demonstrated with different base materials,and then,the cases are being expanded to plasmonic and holographic *** combination of these ultra-thin and light-weight PDL with conventional bulk refractive or reflective optical elements could bring together the advantages of each optical *** integrating these suggestions,we suggest a way to realize the hybrid PDL to be used in the future micro-electronics surface inspection,biomedical,outer space,and extended reality(XR)industries.

A nanofilter composed of carbon nanotube-silver composites for virus removal and antibacterial activity improvement

We have developed a new nanofilter using a carbon nanotube-silver composite material that is capable of efficiently removing waterborne viruses and *** nanofilter was subjected to plasma surface treatment to enhance its flow rate,which was improved by approximately 62%.Nanoscale pores were obtained by fabricating a carbon nanotube network and using nanoparticle fixation technology for the removal of *** pore size of the nanofilter was approximately 38 nm and the measured flow rate ranged from 21.0 to 97.2 L/（min·m^2）under a pressure of 1–6 kgf/cm^2 when the amount of loaded carbon nanotube-silver composite was 1.0 mg/cm^*** nanofilter was tested against Polio-,Noro-,and Coxsackie viruses using a sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction assay to detect the presence of viral particles within the *** trace of viruses was found to flow through the nanofilter with carbon nanotube-silver composite loaded above 0.8 mg/cm^***,the surface of the filter has antibacterial properties to prevent bacterial clogging due to the presence of 20-nm silver nanoparticles,which were synthesized on the carbon nanotube surface.

Periodic Tail Motion Linked to Wing Motion Affects the Longitudinal Stability of Ornithopter Flight

During slow level flight of a pigeon, a caudal muscle involved in tail movement, the levator caudae pars vertebralis, is activated at a particular phase with the pectoralis wing muscle. Inspired by mechanisms for the control of stability in flying animals, especially the role of the tail in avian flight, we investigated how periodic tail motion linked to motion of the wings affects the longitudinal stability of ornithopter flight. This was achieved by using an integrative ornithopter flight simulator that included aeroelastic behaviour of the flexible wings and tail. Trim flight trajectories of the simulated omithopter model were calculated by time integration of the nonlinear equations of a flexible multi-body dynamics coupled with a semi-empirical flapping-wing and tail aerodynamic models. The unique trim flight characteristics of ornithopter, Limit-Cycle Oscillation, were found under the sets of wingbeat frequency and tail elevation angle, and the appropriate phase angle of tail motion was determined by parameter studies minimizing the amplitude of the oscillations. The numerical simulation results show that tail actuation synchronized with wing motion suppresses the oscillation of body pitch angle over a wide range of wingbeat frequencies.

Structural identification of active moiety in anti-tumor metastatic polysaccharide purified from fermented barley by sequential enzymatic hydrolysis

The potent anti-cancer metastatic effects induced by the immunostimulatory activities of intravenously administered BF–I,an active polysaccharide purified from fermented barley,were previously *** study aimed to evaluate the anti-cancer metastatic effect of orally administered BF–I and elucidated the microstructure and active moiety of BF–I using sequential enzymatic *** experiments using Colon26-M3.1 carcinoma,prophylactic oral administration of BF–I potently suppressed lung cancer ***,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of partially methylated alditol acetate showed that BF–I comprised 15 different glycosyl linkages,including 4-linked Xylp(16.1%),terminal Araf(12.4%),4-linked Glcp(32.8%),3-linked Glcp(13.5%),3,6-linked Glcp(1.5%),and 3,6-linked Galp(5.3%).These glycosyl linkage combinations are typical for arabinoxylan,yeast-derivedβ-glucan,barley-derivedβ-glucan,and type II *** clarify the microstructure,BF–I was sequentially degraded via linkage-specific enzymatic hydrolysis using five ***,the sugar composition,glycosyl linkage,and reactivity with theβ-glucosyl Yariv reagent were analyzed,along with sequencing based on tandem mass spectra of partially degraded fragment *** results confirmed that BF–I comprises a mixture of four different types of polysaccharides(arabinoxylan,yeast-derivedβ-glucan,barley-derivedβ-glucan,and type II arabinogalactan)with similar molecular ***,different polysaccharides contribute significantly to cytokine(interleukin-6,-12,and tumor necrosis factor-α)secretion by peritoneal ***,the potent anti-cancer metastatic activity of BF–I is proposed to be related to the immunostimulatory activities of the four different types of polysaccharides.

Dear Editor, The LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN （LBD）/ ASYMMETRICLEAVES2-LIKE （ASL） genes （hereafter referred to as LBD） encode proteins containing a conserved plant-specific LOB domain and play roles in lateral organ development （Iwakawa et al., 2002; Shuai et al., 2002; Majer and Hochholdinger, 2011）. The LOB domain is approximately 100 amino acids in length and contains a conserved four-Cys motif （CX2CX6CX3C）, the Gly-Ala-Ser block （GAS）, and the leucine-zipper-like coiled-coil motif （LX6LX3LX6L）（Shuai et al., 2002）. The leucine-zipper-like coiled-coil motif in the LOB domain is predicted to function in protein dimerization. LOB, AS2, and LBD4 preferentially bind unique DNA sequences in electrophoretic mobility shift assays （EMSAs）（Husbands et al., 2007）. Dual function of a high-contrast hydrophobic-hydrophilic coating for enhanced stability of perovskite solar cells in extremely humid environments

In spite of a continuous increase in their power conversion efficiency （PCE） and an economically viable fabrication process,organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells （PSCs） pose a significant problem when used in practical applications：They show fast degradation of the PCE when exposed to very humid *** this study,the stability of PSCs under very humid conditions is greatly enhanced by coating the surface of the PSC devices with a multi-layer film consisting of ultrahydrophobic and relatively hydrophilic layers.A hydrophobic composite of poly（methyl methacrylate）（PMMA）,polyurethane （PU）,and SiO2 nanoparticles successfully retards the water molecules from very humid ***,the hydrophilic layer with moderately PMMA captures the residual moisture within the perovskite layer;subsequently,the perovskite layer *** dual function of the coating film keeps the PCE of PSCs at 17.3% for 180 min when exposed to over 95% humidity.

Sequential disruption of ALV host receptor genes reveals no sharing of receptors between ALV subgroups A, B, and J

Background: Previously, we showed that targeted disruption of viral receptor genes in avian leukosis virus(ALV)subgroups using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9(Cas9))-based genome editing confers resistance to ALV subgroups B and J. Here, we used the same strategy to target the receptor expressed by ALV subgroup A(TVA) and generate chicken cells resistant to infection by this ***: CRISPR/Cas9-based disruption of exon 2 within the tva gene of DF-1 fibroblasts conferred resistance to infection by ALV subgroup A regardless of whether frameshift mutations were introduced during editing. Conversely,overexpression of the wild-type TVA receptor(wtTVA) by tva-modified DF-1 clones restored susceptibility to ALV subgroup A. The results confirm that exon 2, which contains the low-density lipoprotein receptor class A domain of TVA, is critical for virus entry. Furthermore, we sequentially modified DF-1 cells by editing the tva, tvb, and Na^+/H^+ exchange 1(chNHE1) genes, which are the specific receptors for ALV subgroups A, B, and J, ***: Simultaneous editing of multiple receptors to block infection by different subgroups of ALV confirmed that ALV subgroups A, B, and J do not share host receptors. This strategy could be used to generate cells resistant to multiple viral pathogens that use distinct receptors for cell entry.

Evaluation of the safety of hair essence containing 0.05% purified bee venom on the skin and eyes of rabbits

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety of hair essence containing 0.05%purified bee venom(HE-PBV)on the skin and eyes of New Zealand White ***:HE-PBV which contained 0.05%PBV,purified water,and glycerin,was used as the test *** skin-irritation test(SIT)and eye-irritation test(EIT)were conducted according to the Draize *** the SIT,HE-PBV(0.5 m L)dropped gauze was attached both intact and abraded skin for 24 *** other side of the skin was used as *** 24 and 72 h,the treatment site was observed and scored according to evaluation criteria for skin *** the EIT,the rabbits were divided into two groups:eye-washed(three rabbits)and non-eye-washed(six rabbits).HE-PBV(0.1 m L)was squirted into the right eye of *** left eye was untreated and used as a ***,20-30-s later,the eyes of rabbits in the eye-washed group were washed with^50 m L of physiologic(0.9%)salt ***,1,2,3,4 and 7 d after the start of the EIT,the eyes and behavior of the rabbits were *** degree of eye irritation elicited by HE-PBV was determined in three steps and then the criteria of the classification of eye-irritation ***:The SIT revealed erythema and edema at the site of HE-PBV *** 72 h,the body weight of rabbits was reduced slightly,but other symptoms(except erythema and edema)were not *** Primary Irritation Index score was0.6,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a slight *** EIT did not show mortality or body-weight fluctuation,but hyperemic conjunctiva and eyelid closure were noted after HE-PBV *** for these results,the score for the ophthalmic response on days 1,2,3,4 and 7 was 0,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a ***:These data suggest that HE-PBV did not elicit eye irritation,but was a slight irritant to the skin of rabbits;the latter slight would have been due to the excipients used in manufacture of the hair essence because PBV has been shown to be safe.

Catalyst-free synthesis and mechanical characterization of TaC nanowires

TaC nanowires are expected to be an ideal reinforcing material in ultra-high-temperature ceramics. However, their growth mechanisms and mechanical properties remain unclear, and low-cost large-scale synthesis has not been realised. In this study,bulk synthesis of [100]-oriented TaC nanowires is accomplished by carbothermal synthesis through a direct vapor-solid mechanism. Thermal resonance test results show that the synthesized square TaC nanowires with cross-sectional side-lengths of 65 to 497 nm have a size-independent Young’s modulus of(510.6±12.6) GPa;very close to the corresponding values of their bulk counterparts, but differing considerably from previously published measurements. Molecular dynamics(MD) simulations show that TaC nanowires with side-lengths of above 15 nm have a constant Young’s modulus of 517 GPa, and size effects on the modulus values should only occur at side-lengths below 15 nm. During bending tests, the TaC nanowires fracture into several segments in a brittle mode, and exhibit an increasing fracture strain from 1.88% to 4.28% as their side-length decreases from 489 to 90 nm. Weibull statistics analyses and TEM observations indicate that the failure of the nanowires should be primarily dependent on the number and size of surface defects. MD simulations further reveal that the defect-free TaC nanowires fail brittlely at a theoretical strain up to 5.76%.
