Effects of the Hydro-Alcoholic Extract of Nigella Sativa on Scopolamine-Induced Spatial Memory Impairment in Rats and Its Possible Mechanism

Objective： To evaluate the effect of Nigella sativa （NS） extract on memory performance and its possible mechanisms in scopolamine （Sco）-induced spatial memory impairment model using Morris water maze test. Methods： Thirty-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. The control group received saline instead of both NS extract and Sco. The Sco group was treated by saline for two weeks, and was injected by Sco （2 mg/kg, intraperitoneally） 30 min before each trail in Morris water maze test. Sco＋NS 200 and SCO＋NS 400 groups were daily treated by 200 or 400 mg/kg of NS （intraperitoneally） for two weeks, respectively, and were finally injected by Sco 30 min before Morris water maze test. The brains of animals were removed to determine the acetylcholinesterase （ACHE） activity and oxidative stress criteria in cortical tissues. Results： Time latency and path length in the Sco group were significantly higher than in the control group （P〈0.01）, while the SCO＋NS 400 group showed a significantly shorter traveled path length and time latency compared with the Sco group （P〈0.01）. AChE activity in the cortical tissues of the Sco group was significantly higher than the control group （P〈0.01）, while AChE activity in the Sco＋NS 200 and Sco＋NS 400 groups was lower than the Sco group （P〈0.01）. Following Sco administration, malondialdehyde （MDA） concentrations were increased （P〈0.01） in comparison with the control group, while cortical total thiol content decreased （P〈0.01）. Pretreatment with extracts caused a significant elevation in cortical total thiol content （P〈0.01） and reduction in cortical MDA concentration （P〈0.01） compared with the Sco group. Conclusions： Hydro-alcoholic extract of NS prevents Sco-induced spatial memory deficits and decreases the AChE activity as well as oxidative stress of brain tissues in rats. Our results support the traditional belief about the beneficial effects of NS in nervous system. Moreover, further investigations are needed for better

Presence of different terms with various values can alter the thermal behavior of the nanofluids flow over porous *** aim of this research is to study the influence of nanoparticles volume fraction,nanoparticles type,suction or injection,the heat generation or absorption,the Eckert number,thermal and velocity slip parameters,and radiation on the velocity and temperature fields on the flow and heat transfer over a porous flat *** different types of nanoparticles including metal nanoparticles (Cu),metal oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3) and carbon-based nanomaterials (MWCNTs and SWCNTs) which were dispersed in the water (as based fluid) are *** governing equations are converted into the ordinary differential equations using similarity solution and solved numerically by the RKF45 *** results of the simulations showed a contradiction with the results of other researchers who expressed that using nanoparticles with higher thermal conductivity and volume fraction led to increasing heat transfer rate in nanofluids;this study proves that,in some cases,boosting the volume fraction of nanoparticles has a potential to decrease the heat transfer rate due to significant changes in values of some parameters including radiation,heat generation,and viscous dissipation.

Silicon Affects Transcellular and Apoplastic Uptake of Some Nutrients in Plants

The positive effects of silicon(Si) on growth of plants have been well documented;however,the impact of Si on plant nutrient uptake remains *** growth,nutrient content and uptake of wheat(Triticum aestivum L.),canola(Brassica napus L.) and cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants were evaluated with or without application of 1.5 mmol L^(-1) *** of Si increased dry weights by 8%,30%and 30%and relative growth rate(RGR) by 10%,13%and 17%in the cotton,canola and wheat plants,*** plant relative water content(RWC) was also increased,but the plant transpiration was decreased by Si *** uptake and content of Ca^(2+) were 19%and 21%lower in the cotton and wheat plants with Si than those without Si,respectively;however,Si application increased both K^+ and Fe uptake and contents in all plant *** application reduced B uptake and content only in cotton and increased P and Zn^(2+) contents in all three plant *** decrease in Ca^(2+) uptake by Si application was sustained even in the presence of metabolic inhibitors 2,4-dinitrophenol and sodium *** of Ca^(2+) by Si application was enhanced or did not change when plant shoots were saturated with water vapor or their roots were exposed to low ***,Si application increased the uptake of transcellularly transported elements like K^+,P,Zn^(2+) and *** contrast,Ca2+ uptake which occurred via both apoplastic and transcellular pathways was decreased by Si application,possibly through reduction of apoplastic *** efficient nutrient uptake might be another promoting effect of Si on plant growth.

Zinc chloride is an efficient and safe catalyst in the [3 ＋ 2] cycloaddition reaction of organic nitriles with sodium azide in solventless condition. The corresponding 5-substituted ^1H tetrazoles were obtained under mild conditions. This method can overcome disadvantages such as： the use of toxic metals and expensive reagents, drastic reaction conditions, water sensitivity and the presence of dangerous hydrazoic acid.

Nonlinear energy harvesting from vibratory disc-shaped piezoelectric laminates

Implementing resonators with geometrical nonlinearities in vibrational energy harvesting systems leads to considerable enhancement of their operational bandwidths. This advantage of nonlinear devices in comparison to their linear counterparts is much more obvious especially at small-scale where transition to nonlinear regime of vibration occurs at moderately small amplitudes of the base excitation. In this paper the nonlinear behavior of a disc-shaped piezoelectric laminated harvester considering midplane-stretching effect is investigated. Extended Hamilton’s principle is exploited to extract electromechanically coupled governing partial differential equations of the system. The equations are firstly order-reduced and then analytically solved implementing perturbation method of multiple scales. A nonlinear finite element method(FEM) simulation of the system is performed additionally for the purpose of verification which shows agreement with the analytical solution to a large extent. The frequency response of the output power at primary resonance of the harvester is calculated to investigate the effect of nonlinearity on the system performance. Effect of various parameters including mechanical quality factor, external load impedance and base excitation amplitude on the behavior of the system are studied. Findings indicate that in the nonlinear regime both output power and operational bandwidth of the harvester will be enhanced by increasing the mechanical quality factor which can be considered as a significant advantage in comparison to linear harvesters in which these two factors vary in opposite ways as quality factor is changed.

Soil Atterberg Limits and Consistency Indices as Influenced by Land Use and Slope Position in Western Iran

Atterberg limits and consistency indices are used for classifications of cohesive(fine-grained) soils in relation with compaction and tillage practices. They also provide information for interpreting several soil mechanical and physical properties such as shear strength, compressibility, shrinkage and swelling potentials. Although, several studies have been conducted regarding the land use effects on various soil mechanical properties, little is known about the effects of land use and slope positions on Atterberg limits and consistency indices. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of land use and slope position on selected soil physical and chemical properties, Atterberg limits and consistency indices in hilly region of western Iran. Three land uses including dryland farming, irrigated farming and pasture and four slope positions(i.e., shoulder, backslope, footslope, and toeslope) were used for soil samplings. One hundred eleven soil samples were collected from the surface soil(0-10 cm). Selected physical and chemical properties, liquid limit(LL), plastic limit(PL) and shrinkage limit(SL) were measured using the standard methods; and consistency indices including plastic index(PI), friability index(FI), shrinkage index(SI) and soil activity(A=PI/clay) were calculated. The results showed that irrigated farming significantly increased organic matter content(OM) and OM/clay ratio, and decreased bulk density(ρb) and relative bulk density(ρb-rel) as a result of higher biomass production and plant residues added to the soil compared to other land uses. Except for sand content, OM, ρb, cation exchange capacity(CEC) and calcium carbonate equivalent(CCE), slope position significantly affected soil physical and chemical properties. Organo-silane compounds in medium density fiberboard:physical and mechanical properties

We studied the effects of nanoparticles of organo-silane（NOS） compounds in the size range of20–80 nm on physical and mechanical properties in medium density fiberboard,and used NOS at four consumption levels of 0,50,100,and 150 g kg-1dry wood *** of all treatments was kept constant at 0.67 g *** water-repellent property of organo-silane significantly reduced water absorption（WA） and thickness swelling but mechanical properties declined due to the reduced proportion of wood-fiber as organo-silane was added to the matrix：the compression ratio of MDF panels and the integrity among wood-fibers both declined,resulting in reduced mechanical *** recommend use of 50 g of NOS/kg wood-fiber to improve WA and thickness swelling while retaining acceptable mechanical properties.

The Comparative Study of Gelatin/CNT-contained Mg-Ca-P Bone Cement with the Plain and CNT-reinforced Ones

Mimicking compositional and constructional features of the extracellular matrix(ECM)is an effective parameter in improving the biological response of *** this regard,carbon nanotube(CNT)and gelatin were added to magnesium-calcium phosphate cement(CNG)to mimic fibrillar construction and organic composition of ECM,respectively,besides the CNG performance was compared with the plain and CNT-reinforced *** behavior of the cements was investigated by evaluating their setting time,cement composition variation during setting,and viscosity ***,compressive strength,degradation,and cell response of the cements were *** 5 wt.%gelatin reduced setting time about 60%,because of gel formation,not due to struvite ***,the gelatin decreased compressive strength by about 20%.Although gelatin decreased compressive strength,the strength remained in the range attributed to trabecular *** the types of cement indicated shear thinning behavior that made their injectability *** to other types of cement,CNG enhanced proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells besides faster degradation,nontoxicity and suitable cell ***,mimicking features of CNG enhanced osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity of the cement compared to the plain one.

Lead stabilization in a polluted calcareous soil using cost-effective biochar and zeolite amendments after spinach cultivation

Biochar has been shown to be an effective organic soil amendment for the in-situ immobilization of lead(Pb).Little research has been done on the effects of biochar and zeolite interactions on Pb immobilization in contaminated calcareous ***,the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of zeolite(2%and 4%,weight:weight)and biochars(3%,weight:weight)prepared from green compost(GB),poultry manure(PB),and municipal waste(MB)on the content of Pb in spinach shoots and Pb stabilization in a greenhouse experiment conducted using a Pb-contaminated calcareous *** of GB and PB significantly decreased the Pb mobility factor(MF)from 2.8%to 4.6%and the cumulative Pb release(diethylenetriamine pentaacetate(DTPA)extraction)from 16.8%to 20.1%in the calcareous soil,which were further enhanced by the combined addition of zeolite,with Pb MF reduction from 4.4%to 8.4%and cumulative Pb release reduction from 24.8%to 28.6%.The enhancement of soil Pb immobilization was attributed to the properties of the amendments,such as high pH,ash content,and phosphorus content(10.5^(-1)1.0,390-435 g kg^(-1),and 2.5-4.3 g kg^(-1),respectively).Results of the soil Pb sequential extraction and Pb release kinetics were highly and significantly correlated with spinach shoot Pb *** chemical data showed that the application of MB with 4%zeolite was the most effective treatment for immobilizing Pb(8.4%reduction in Pb MF and 28.6%reduction in cumulative DTPA-extractable Pb),which is in agreement with the results of the spinach shoot Pb(89.0%reduction in Pb uptake).
