Basic Research Advances in China on Embryo Implantation,Placentation,and Parturition

This review aimed to summarize the major progress in maternal-fetal medicine achieved by Chinese scientists in recent years.PubMed was systematically searched from January 2020 to November 2023.Publications that reported the progress in embryo implantation,placentation,and parturition made by Chinese scientists in the last 3 years were selected.The milestone events during gestation,embryo implantation,endometrial decidualization,placentation,and parturition are pivotal to a successful pregnancy.Embryo implantation requires intricate interactions between implantation-competent blastocysts and receptive endometrium.To adapt to pregnancy,endometrial stromal cells transform into specialized decidual cells,which occur spontaneously under the influence of ovarian hormones in humans but require the presence of embryos in mice.With embryonic development,the placenta forms to support fetal growth until parturition.The maternal-fetal interface is composed of diverse cell types,including endometrial decidual cells,placental trophoblast cells,endothelial cells,and various immune cells,a sophisticated interplay among which contributes to the maintenance of pregnancy.Near term,the uterus transitions from quiescence to contractility,in preparation for delivery.Disruptions to these events lead to pregnancy-related disorders such as repeated implantation failure,recurrent pregnancy loss,preeclampsia,fetal growth restriction,preterm birth,and infertility.In recent years,Chinese scientists have made prominent achievements in basic research on the aforementioned pregnancy events.Chinese scientists have made remarkable contributions to reproductive biology and maternal-fetal medicine research in recent years,highlighting future research directions in this field.

A GMDA clustering algorithm based on evidential reasoning architecture

The traditional clustering algorithm is difficult to deal with the identification and division of uncertain objects distributed in the overlapping region,and aimed at solving this problem,the Evidential Clustering based on General Mixture Decomposition Algorithm(GMDA-EC)is proposed.First,the belief classification of target cluster is carried out,and the sample category of target distribution overlapping region is extended.Then,on the basis of General Mixture Decomposition Algorithm(GMDA)clustering,the fusion model of evidence credibility and evidence relative entropy is constructed to generate the basic probability assignment of the target and achieve the belief division of the target.Finally,the performance of the algorithm is verified by the synthetic dataset and the measured dataset.The experimental results show that the algorithm can reflect the uncertainty of target clustering results more comprehensively than the traditional probabilistic partition clustering algorithm.

Fractures have an extraordinarily negative impact on individuals'quality of life and functional status.Nonunion or disability of fracture is a major health issue with important clinical,social,and economic implications.1 Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)play an indispensable role in the initiation of the fracture repair process including the formation of a callus which is replaced by new bone.The use of MSCs in the treatment of fractures is very attractive as they can reduce the time of healing and occurrence of nonunion.

The endoplasmic reticulum(ER),which is composed of a continuous network of tubules and sheets,forms the most widely distributed membrane system in eukaryotic cells.As a result,it engages a variety of organelles by establishing membrane contact sites(MCSs).These contacts regulate organelle positioning and remodeling,including fusion and fission,facilitate precise lipid exchange,and couple vital signaling events.Here,we systematically review recent advances and converging themes on ER-involved organellar contact.The molecular basis,cellular influence,and potential physiological functions for ER/nuclear envelope contacts with mitochondria,Golgi,endosomes,lysosomes,lipid droplets,autophagosomes,and plasma membrane are summarized.

The Social Causes of China’s Electric Vehicle Revolution and Its Impact on the Oil Industry

Globally,electric vehicle(EV)proliferation is indisputable.Central to EV manufacturing costs are batteries,but recent strides in power battery technology and notable cost reductions have augmented driving ranges and eased overall production expenses.EVs,now more accessible and of higher quality,are gaining traction among prospective buyers.The International Energy Agency records a stark rise:from just 1,890 registered EVs in 20051,sales surged past 10 million in 20222,and by 2023,neared 14 million units3.In merely 18 years,the global EV count multiplied by nearly 10,000-fold.

Unveiling the role of Zn dopants in NiFe phosphide nanosheet for oxygen evolution reaction

Transition metal phosphides have been recognized as promising electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction(OER) due to their low cost and high activity. However, the insufficient exposed active region limited the OER performance. Recently, the introduction of sacrificial dopants has been considered an effective strategy to enlarge the surface area. Herein, the Zn dopants are introduced in NiFe phosphide(NiFeZnP) nanosheet, which work as the sacrificial dopants to generate more exposed active NiFe sites and promote the formation of the NiFeOOH active phase during OER process. The optimized Zn-doped NiFeP catalyst shows an overpotential of ≈203 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2in 1 M KOH, and a stability of 100 h at 1000 mA cm-2. Overall, this work provides a sacrificial Zn doping strategy to prepare highly efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Multiple metallic dopants in nickel nanoparticles for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Developing efficient oxygen evolution reaction(OER) electrocatalysts is of great importance for sustainable energy conversion and storage. Ni-based catalysts have shown great potential as OER electrocatalysts, but their performance still needs to be improved. Herein, we report the multiple metal doped nickel nanoparticles synthesized via a simple oil phase strategy as efficient OER catalysts. The FeMnMoV–Ni exhibits superior OER performance with an overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA cm-2and a long-term stability of 250 h in 1 M KOH solution. In situ Raman analysis shows that the NiOOH site works as the active center and multiple metallic dopants facilitate the formation of NiOOH. Mo and V dopants promote the formation of high-valence state of Ni sites, and Mn dopants increase the electrochemical active surface area and expose more active sites. This work provides a novel strategy for catalyst design, which is critical for developing multiple metal doped catalysts.

The dynamic arms race during the early invasion of woodland strawberry by Botrytis cinerea revealed by dual dense high-resolution RNA-seq analyses

Necrotrophic pathogens replicate massively upon colonizing plants,causing large-scale wilting and death of plant tissues.Under-standing both mechanisms of pathogen invasion and host response processes prior to symptom appearance and their key regulatory networks is therefore important for defense against pathogen attack.Here,we investigated the mechanisms of interaction between woodland strawberry(Fragaria vesca)leaves and gray mold pathogen(Botrytis cinerea)at 14 infection time points during the first 12 hours of the infection period using a dense,high-resolution time series dual transcriptomic analysis,characterizing the arms race between strawberry F.vesca and B.cinerea before the appearance of localized lesions.Strawberry leaves rapidly initiated strong systemic defenses at the first sign of external stimulation and showed lower levels of transcriptomic change later in the infection process.Unlike the host plants,B.cinerea showed larger-scale transcriptomic changes that persisted throughout the infection process.Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified highly correlated genes in 32 gene expression modules between B.cinerea and strawberry.Yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays revealed that the disease response protein FvRLP2 from woodland strawberry interacted with the cell death inducing proteins BcXYG1 and BcPG3 from B.cinerea.Overexpression of FvRLP2 in both strawberry and Arabidopsis inhibited B.cinerea infection,confirming these genes’respective functions.These findings shed light on the arms race process by which B.cinerea invades host plants and strawberry to defend against pathogen infection.

Outstanding high-temperature oxidation-and wear-resistance of WC based cermets

The interaction between oxidation and frictional load can greatly deteriorate the performance of ceramic-metal composites.In this work,we used WC-Co cermet as a representative of ceramic-metal composites to study its wear failure behavior and protection effectiveness.It is found that a transition of wear mechanism from mechanical wear to oxidative wear occurs with increasing temperature.The addition of zirconia can significantly improve the anti-oxidation performance and load-bearing capacity of the cermet under the frictional load.This is mainly attributed to the modulation of the tribo-oxide layer constitutions and changes in surface morphology.The zirconia component facilitates the formation of a dense protective oxide layer and reduces the content of brittle oxides on the worn surface.Based on the understanding of the temperature-and oxidation-induced compositional and microstructural evolutions at the sliding contact surface and subsurface,a promising approach is proposed for developing ceramic-metal composites with high wear resistance and anti-oxidation capability.

Temporal-spatial distributions of road silt loadings and fugitive road dust emissions in Beijing from 2019 to 2020

Road silt loading(sL)is an important parameter in the fugitive road dust(FRD)emissions.In this study,the improved Testing Re-entrained Aerosol Kinetic Emissions from Roads(TRAKER)combined with the AP-42 method was firstly developed to quickly measure and estimate the sLs of paved roads in Beijing,China.The annual average sLs in Beijing was 0.59±0.31 g/m^(2)in 2020,and decreased by 22.4%compared with that in 2019.The seasonal variations of sLs followed the order of spring>winter>summer>autumn in the two years.The seasonal mean road sLs on the same type road in the four seasons presented a decline trend from^(2)019 to 2020,especially on the Expressway,decreasing 47.4%-72.7%.The road sLs on the different type roads in the same season followed the order of Major arterial∼Minor arterial∼Branch road>Express road,and Township road∼Country highway>Provincial highway∼National highway.The emission intensities of PM10 and PM_(2.5)from FRD in Beijing in 2020 were lower than those in 2019.The PM10 and PM_(2.5)emission intensities at the four planning areas in the two years all presented the order of the capital functional core area>the urban functional expansion area>the urban development new area>the ecological conservation and development area.The annual emissions of PM10 and PM_(2.5)from FRD in Beijing in 2020 were 74,886 ton and 18,118 ton,respectively,decreasing by∼33.3%compared with those in 2019.
