Diffusion tensor imaging of the hippocampus reflects the severity of hippocampal injury induced by global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury

At present,predicting the severity of brain injury caused by global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury(GCI/RI)is a clinical problem.After such an injury,clinical indicators that can directly reflect neurological dysfunction are lacking.The change in hippocampal microstructure is the key to memory formation and consolidation.Diffusion tensor imaging is a highly sensitive tool for visualizing injury to hippocampal microstructure.Although hippocampal microstructure,brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),and tropomyosin-related kinase B(Trk B)levels are closely related to nerve injury and the repair process after GCI/RI,whether these indicators can reflect the severity of such hippocampal injury remains unknown.To address this issue,we established rat models of GCI/RI using the four-vessel occlusion method.Diffusion tensor imaging parameters,BDNF,and Trk B levels were correlated with modified neurological severity scores.The results revealed that after GCI/RI,while neurological function was not related to BDNF and Trk B levels,it was related to hippocampal fractional anisotropy.These findings suggest that hippocampal fractional anisotropy can reflect the severity of hippocampal injury after global GCI/RI.The study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Capital Medical University,China(approval No.AEEI-2015-139)on November 9,2015.

Mass Spectrometry-Based Targeted Metabolomics Revealed the Regulatory Roles of Magnesium on Biofilm Formation in Escherichia coli by Targeting Functional Metabolites

Biofi lms often impose harmful infl uences in many niches involving food contamination,antibiotics resistance,and environmental issues.However,eradicating biofi lms remains diffi cultly because the formation mechanism of biofi lms is still incompletely clarifi ed.Here,we attempted to explore the regulatory role of magnesium(Mg^(2+))on biofi lm formation in Escherichia coli(E.coli)using phenotype visualization with targeted metabolomics method.We found that Mg^(2+)could exert signifi cant infl uence on biofi lm formation with a concentration dependency by regulating phenotypic morphology and triggering metabolic modifi cations of biofi lm.Phenotypic imaging revealed that increasing concentration of Mg^(2+)gradually inhibited biofi lm formation,Mg^(2+)was observed to restore the microstructure of E.coli strain in biofi lms to that in the relevant planktonic cells.In addition,our metabolomics analysis characterized 20 diff erential metabolites and associated two metabolic pathways including nucleotide metabolism and amino acid metabolism that were notably modifi ed during biofi lm formation under the treatments of varied Mg^(2+).Altogether,our work provides a novel insight into the infl uence of Mg^(2+)on biofi lm formation at a metabolic level,which is implicated in the novel solution to disturb biofi lm formation through the regulation of Mg^(2+)and functional metabolite interaction.

Positive effects of music therapist's selected auditory stimulation on the autonomic nervous system of patients with disorder of consciousness: a randomized controlled trial

The current randomized controlled trial was performed at the China Rehabilitation Science Institute, China to test the hypothesis that musical auditory stimulation has positive effects on the autonomic nervous system of patients with disorder of consciousness.Although past studies have recommended that patients with disorder of consciousness listen to patient-preferred music, this practice is not universally accepted by researchers.Twenty patients with severe disorder of consciousness listened to either therapist-selected(n = 10, 6 males and 4 females;43.33 ± 18.76 years old) or patient-preferred(n = 10, 5 males and 5 females, 48.83 ± 18.79 years old) musical therapy, 30 minutes/day, 5 times/week for 6 weeks.The results showed no obvious differences in heart rate variability-related parameters including heart rate, standard deviation of normal-to-normal R-R intervals, and the root-mean-square of successive heartbeat interval differences of successive heartbeat intervals between the two groups of patients.However, percentage of differences exceeding 50 ms between adjacent normal number of intervals, low-frequency power/high-frequency power, high-frequency power norm, low-frequency power norm, and total power were higher in patients receiving therapist-selected music than in patients receiving their own preferred music.In contrast, this relationship was reversed for the high-frequency power and very-low-frequency band.These results suggest that compared with preferred musical stimulation, therapist-selected musical stimulation resulted in higher interactive activity of the autonomic nervous system.Therefore, therapist-selected musical stimulation should be used to arouse the autonomic nervous system of patients with disorder of consciousness.This study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee of China Rehabilitation Research Center, China(approval No.2018-022-1) on March 12, 2018 and registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry(registration number Chi CTR1800017809) on August 15, 2018.

Reliability sensitivity analysis based on multi-hyperplane combination method

For a nonlinear limit state function, the first-order reliability method(FORM) may cause large errors in the computation of not only the reliability index or failure probability but also the reliability sensitivity. In order to obtain more the accurate results of the reliability sensitivity analysis, a number of hyperplanes are built near the design point by first-order Tayler series expansion, which replace the known nonlinear limit state hypersurface, and an equivalent computational method is utilized to construct an equivalent hyperplane of the obtained hyperplanes. And the reliability sensitivities can be estimated more accurately by the derived equations based on the equivalent hyperplane. An example shows that the method is effective and feasible.

Short-term clinical efficacy of capecitabine combined with oxaliplatin in the treatment of stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ rectal cancer after operation with Shengmai Yin

[Objective]To observe the short-term clinical efficacy of ciprofloxacin+oxaliplatin combined with Shengmaiyin onⅡ/Ⅲrectal cancer patients.[Method]120(2011.2-2018.2,Department of Surgical oncology,The Center Hospital Affiliated to Shenyang Medical College)Ⅱ/Ⅲrectal cancer patients,then they were randomly divided into control group and observation group,every group include 60 patients.The control group were given ciprofloxacin+oxaliplatin,and the three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy,observation group were given Shengmaiyin,treatment for 1 month,then assessed the clinical efficacy,the immunidy index(cellular immunity and humoral immunity),and record the adverse reaction.[Results]After treatment,short term clinical efficacy in observation group significantly better than the control group but the difference had no statistical significance(p>0.05).After treatment,the immunidy index(cellular immunity and humoral immunity)in the two groups were better than before treatment,the difference had statistical significance(p0.05).[Conclusions]Using the ciprofloxacin+oxaliplatin combined with Shengmaiyin onⅡ/Ⅲrectal cancer patients treatment can improve the immunidy function and short-term clinical efficacy.

Comprehensive study on the spatial distribution of heavy metals and their environmental risks in high-sulfur coal gangue dumps in China

The accumulation of coal gangue(CG)from coal mining is an important source of heavy metals(HMs)in soil.Its spatial distribution and environment risk assessment are extremely important for the management and remediation of HMs.Eighty soil samples were collected from the high-sulfur CG site in northern China and analyzed for six HMs.The results showed that the soil was heavily contaminated by Mn,Cr and Ni based on the Nemerow index,and posed seriously ecological risk depended on the geo-accumulation index,potential ecological risk index and risk assessment code.The semi-variogram model and ordinary kriging interpolation accurately portrayed the spatial distribution of HMs.Fe,Mn,and Cr were distributed by band diffusion,Ni was distributed by core,the distribution of Cu had obvious patchiness and Zn was more uniform.The spatial autocorrelation indicated that all HMs had strong spatial heterogeneity.The BCR sequential extraction was employed to qualify the geochemical fractions of HMs.The data indicated that Fe and Cr were dominated by residual fraction;Cu,Ni and Zn were dominated by reducible and oxidizable fractions;Mn was dominated by reducible and acid-extractable(25.38%-44.67%)fractions.Pearson correlation analysis showed that pH was the main control factor affecting the non-residue fractions of HMs.Therefore,acid production from high sulfur CG reduced soil pH by 2-3,which indirectly promoted the activity of HMs.Finally,the conceptual model of HMs contamination at the CG site was proposed,which can be useful for the development of ecological remediation strategies.

Photocatalytic in situ H2O2 production and activation for enhanced ciprofloxacin degradation over CeO2-Co3O4/g-C3N4:key role of CeO2

The abused ciprofloxacin antibiotics have caused significant environmental damage.Although oxidative degradation of ciprofloxacin exhibits promising efficacy,it often entails excessive energy consumption.Hence,it is necessary to explore an effective and ecologically sustainable degradation strategy.Herein,we demonstrated that g-C3N4decorated with the coordinated CeO2and Co3O4（CeO2-Co3O4/CN） exhibited effective ciprofloxacin photodegradation via in situ H2O2production and activation mechanism.Results indicate that the introduced CeO2enhances the transference of photogenerated electrons to O2by adjusting the oxygen vacancy of photocatalyst,thereby increasing the generation of superoxide radicals,which in turn generate H2O2,resulting in a 22.4-fold increase in H2O2generation over g-C3N4.Moreover,the in situ H2O2generation facilitated by CeO2is confirmed to be essential for ciprofloxacin degradation via CeO2-Co3O4/CN,as it provides enough oxidant for Co3O4to activate into hydroxyl radicals for the pollutants degradation.Ultimately,CeO2-Co3O4/CN achieves a ciprofloxacin degradation ratio of 97.7% within 80 min.This study introduces a novel approach that combines H2O2generation and activation,offering an innovative perspective for achieving clean and efficient purification of antibiotic-contaminated water.

Layer Hall effect induced by hidden Berry curvature in antiferromagnetic insulators

The layer Hall effect describes electrons spontaneously deflected to opposite sides at different layers, which has been experimentally reported in the MnBi2Te4thin films under perpendicular electric fields. Here, we reveal a universal origin of the layer Hall effect in terms of the so-called hidden Berry curvature, as well as material design principles. Hence, it gives rise to zero Berry curvature in momentum space but non-zero layer-locked hidden Berry curvature in real space. We show that, compared to that of a trivial insulator, the layer Hall effect is significantly enhanced in antiferromagnetic topological insulators. Our universal picture provides a paradigm for revealing the hidden physics as a result of the interplay between the global and local symmetries, and can be generalized in various scenarios.

Material flow analysis and global warming potential assessment of an industrial insect-based bioconversion plant using housefly larvae

The significant increase in the demand for biomass waste treatment after garbage classification has led to housefly larvae treatment becoming an attractive treatment option.It can provide a source of protein while treating biomass waste,which means that nutrients can be returned to the natural food chain.However,the performance of this technology in terms of its environmental impacts is still unclear,particularly with regards to global warming potential(GWP).This study used a life cycle assessment(LCA)approach to assess a housefly larvae treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 50 tons of biomass waste per day.The LCA results showed that the 95% confidence intervals for the GWP in summer and winter were determined to be 24.46-32.81 kg CO_(2) equivalent(CO_(2)-eq)/ton biomass waste and5.37-10.08 kg CO_(2)-eq/ton biomass waste,respectively.The greater GWP value in summer is due to the longer ventilation time and higher ventilation intensity in summer,which consumes more power.The main GWP contributions are from(1)electricity needs(accounting for 78.6% of emissions in summer and 70.2%in winter)and(2)product substitution by mature housefly larvae and compost(both summer and winter accounting for 96.8% of carbon reduction).

A global perspective on microbial risk factors in effluents of wastewater treatment plants

Effective monitoring and management of microbial risk factors in wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)effluents require a comprehensive investigation of these risks.A global survey on microbial risk factors in WWTP effluents could reveal important insights into their risk features.This study aims to explore the abundance and types of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs),virulence factor genes(VFGs),the vector of ARG/VFG,and dominant pathogens in global WWTP effluents.We collected 113 metagenomes of WWTP effluents from the Sequence Read Archive of the National Center for Biotechnology Information and characterized the microbial risk factors.Our results showed that multidrug resistance was the dominant ARG type,while offensive virulence factors were the most abundant type of VFGs.The most dominant types of ARGs in the vector of plasmid and phage were both aminoglycoside resistance,which is concerning as aminoglycosides are often a last resort for treating multi-resistant infections.Acinetobacter baumannii was the most dominant pathogen,rather than Escherichia coli,and a weak negative correlation between Escherichia coli and two other dominant pathogens(Acinetobacter baumannii and Bacteroides uniformis)suggests that using Escherichia coli as a biological indicator for all pathogens in WWTP effluents may not be appropriate.The Getah virus was the most dominant virus found in global WWTP effluents.Our study presents a comprehensive global-scale investigation of microbial risk factors in WWTP effluents,providing valuable insights into the potential risks associated with WWTP effluents and contributing to the monitoring and control of these risks.
