The influence of obesity duration on left ventricular mass, volume and function: A pilot study

Introduction: Despite the bulk of evidence between obesity and cardiovascular complications, the effect of the duration of obesity (DOO) on cardiac function has so far received limited attention. The aim of the study is to study the relationship between a new, American heart Association (AhA) and World health Organization (WhO)-adapted formula for reporting DOO with echocardiographic findings and comorbidities in a large cohort of individuals whose BMI ranged from normal (·m﹣2) to morbid obesity (>40 Kg·m﹣2) and had been obese for varying lengths of time. Methods: 198 (M60/F138) asymptomatic patients were recruited. Patients were classified according to their reported DOO. The normal weight group (N = 92 (40/F52) was formed by those patients who did not recall maintaining a BMI > 30 Kg·m﹣2 from age 18 while those recalling maintenance of a BMI > 30 Kg·m﹣2 since age 18 and thereafter formed the obese group (N = 106 (M20/F86)). A detailed clinical, echo-cardiographic and analytical study was performed. Results: DOO in our series disclosed a significant correlation with left ventricular architecture and hemodynamics, left ventricular mass, cardiac output as well as the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and insulin resistance. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that almost 54% of the interventricular septum thickness’s variance can be independently predicted by a model including DOO, gender, hypertension and logtransformed hOMA. Conclusions: Our formula for estimating the duration of obesity provides a simple, user-friendly tool whose utilization in bariatric preoperative assessments and in advanced nursing practice deserves prospective studies.

Structural health monitoring (ShM) is a relevant topic for civil systems and involves the monitoring, data processing and interpretation to evaluate the condition of a structure, in order to detect damage. In real structures, two or more sites or types of damage can be present at the same time. It has been shown that one kind of damaged condition can interfere with the detection of another kind of damage, leading to an incorrect assessment about the structure condition. Identifying combined damage on structures still represents a challenge for condition monitoring, because the reliable identification of a combined damaged condition is a difficult task. Thus, this work presents a fusion of methodologies, where a single wavelet-packet and the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method are combined with artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the automated and online identification-location of single or multiple-combined damage in a scaled model of a five-bay truss-type structure. Results showed that the proposed methodology is very efficient and reliable for identifying and locating the three kinds of damage, as well as their combinations. Therefore, this methodology could be applied to detection-location of damage in real truss-type structures, which would help to improve the characteristics and life span of real structures.

Kinetics of the h＋-ATPase from Dry and 5-hours- Imbibed Maize Embryos in Its Native, Solubilized, and Reconstituted Forms

Membranes undergo recovery upon rehydration in seed germination. Previous work has described that the plasma membrane h＋-ATPase from maize embryos adopts two different forms at 0 and 5 h of imbibition. We investigated how the kinetics of these two forms could be affected by alterations in the plasma membrane （PM）. In comparison to the O-h, PMs from the 5-h imbibed embryos showed changes in glycerophospholipid composition, decrease in leakage, and increase in fluidity. Kinetics of the PM h^-ATPase from 0 and 5-h imbibed embryos showed negative cooperativity, With the removal of the membrane environment, the activity of the enzymes shifted to a more complex kinetics, displaying two enzyme components. Lipid reconstitution produced one component with positive cooperativity. In all cases, enzymes from 0 and 5-h imbibed embryos presented similar kinetics with some quantitative differences. These results indicate that the two enzyme forms have the potential ability to respond to changes in the membrane enyiror^rpent, but the fact that they do not show differences in the native membranes at 0 or 5 h implies that modifications in the membrane are not drastic enough to alter their kinetics, or that they are able to preserve their boundary lipids or associated proteins and thus retain the same kinetic behavior.

The Number Theory comes back as the heart of unified Science, in a Computing Cosmos using the bases 2;3;5;7 whose two symmetric combinations explain the main lepton mass ratios. The corresponding holic Principle induces a symmetry between the Newton and Planck constants which confirm the Permanent Sweeping holography Bang Cosmology, with invariant baryon density 3/10, the dark baryons being dephased matter-antimatter oscillation. Repression of the Auxin Response Pathway Increases Arabidopsis Susceptibility to Necrotrophic Fungi

In plants, resistance to necrotrophic pathogens depends on the interplay between different hormone systems, such as those regulated by salicylic acid （SA）, jasmonic acid （JA）, ethylene, and abscisic acid. Repression of auxin signaling by the SA pathway was recently shown to contribute to antibacterial resistance. here, we demonstrate that Arabidopsis auxin signaling mutants axrl, axr2, and axr6 that have defects in the auxin-stimulated SCF （Skpl-Cullin- F-box） ubiquitination pathway exhibit increased susceptibility to the necrotrophic fungi Plectosphaerella cucumerina and Botrytis cinerea. Also, stabilization of the auxin transcriptional repressor AXR3 that is normally targeted for removal by the SCF-ubiquitin/proteasome machinery occurs upon P. cucumerina infection. Pharmacological inhibition of auxin transport or proteasome function each compromise necrotroph resistance of wild-type plants to a similar extent as in non-treated auxin response mutants. These results suggest that auxin signaling is important for resistance to the necrotro- phic fungi P. cucumerina and B. cinerea. SGTlb （one of two Arabidopsis SGT1 genes encoding hSP90/hSC70 co-chaperones） promotes the functions of SCF E3-ubiquitin ligase complexes in auxin and JA responses and resistance conditioned by certain Resistance （R） genes to biotrophic pathogens. We find that sgtlb mutants are as resistant to P. cucumerina as wild-type plants. Conversely, auxin/SCF signaling mutants are uncompromised in RPP4-triggered resistance to the obligate biotrophic oomycete, hyaloperonospora parasitica. Thus, the predominant action of SGTlb in R gene-conditioned resis- tance to oomycetes appears to be at a site other than assisting SCF E3-ubiquitin ligases. however, genetic additivity of sgtlb axrl double mutants in susceptibility to h. parasitica suggests that SCF-mediated ubiquitination contributes to lim- iting biotrophic pathogen colonization once plant-pathogen compatibility is established.

当今电力系统面临着越来越多的来自各方的压力，其中包括电网扩大的困难，用电需求不断增长，及缺乏适宜的调整构架来鼓励新的输配电工程的投资。在哥伦比亚，这种现象迫使电力系统接近极限运行，因此主要的公用电力公司和独立系统操作者（XM）开始立项来确定主要发电机的实际动态和静态无功能力。一旦这项工作完成，基于完整的电力系统模型的电网规划和安全评价将会对发电机提供电压支持和电力系统稳定性的实际能力给出更好的确认。一年多以来，专业委员会研究了发电机无功功率的产出和吸收，掌握了构成同步发电机出力曲线的不同限值，其中包括转子绕组、定子铁心、辅机系统以及发电机稳定性所要求的限值，最终提出一个具体的协议用于无功能力试验。此协议有两个主要的目的：通过识别发电机实际的安全运行区域来重新定义出力曲线，并按照所划定的标准来调节过励和欠励限制器，使之与出力曲线一致。通过定义欠励和过励限制器调节标准，可以使发电机组吸收和产出最多的无功功率，而无需要降低发电机及其相关设备的安全性和整体性。了解发电机实际吸收和产出无功功率能力的一个直接获益是因为维持电压而发电所带来的运行成本的降低。也就是说，如果发现一组发电机的无功能力超出了起初申报的值，那么因为有过剩的无功发电能力，对该地区要求的最少联网发电量计算值会减少。另一个收益是改善了电网规划，现在更接近电力系统的实际运行条件，减少了高成本的无功资源设备的购买，并且由于了解了电力系统的实际需求，减小了电压跌落的风险。最近已在两座电厂按照该协议进行了试验，一个是1200MW的水电厂，另一个是790MW的火电厂，证明了其一致性和可信性。目前，此协议已被用作全哥伦比亚所有中央调度发电机进行此类试验的通用协议和“标准”。本文描述了该协议的形成过程，以及表明其在电力系统中适用性的现场试验结果。考虑到发电机控制有效模型的可用性，并预计相量测量单元在哥伦比亚电力系统中的广泛应用，有望在不久的将来可以根据并网的全部机组的实际出力曲线实现运行点的实时监测。这样，电厂运行人员不再担心机组运行在重新定义的实际出力曲线中的不同点，并且有助于电力系统运营者掌握每个时刻无功功率的实际储备量。通过此信息还可以实时了解电压稳定性的裕度，并且在需要的时候采取预防措施。

Application of Anodic Oxidation with Graphite Electrodes in Pretreated Leachates

Currently, landfills are the main method used for the final disposal of urban solid waste. The degradation processes that waste goes through in these sites, alongside rainwater that percolates through them, generate highly polluting liquids (leachate). In the treatment of leachate, advanced oxidation processes (AOP) can significantly reduce the concentrations of different pollutants. Due to the high documented potential around AOPs, in this study, the effectiveness of anodic oxidation in the removal of the remaining organic load in leachates pretreated in a biological system was evaluated. Graphite electrodes were used as anode and cathode. The efficiency of anodic oxidation, in terms of the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color, was evaluated under different current densities (7, 12, 17 and 22 mA/cm2) and ph values (3, 4.5 and 6). Under the best conditions found (22 mA/cm2 and ph of 6) and with an oxidation time of 5 hours, a maximum removal of 68% in COD and 91% in color was achieved, which represented a quality in the final effluent of 271 mg/L and 151 Pt-Co in COD and color, respectively. Therefore, considering that graphite is an economic and widely available material, the results obtained show anodic oxidation, with the use of graphite electrodes, as a technically viable alternative as a final purification stage for pretreated leachates.

Although the oxygen reduction process to hydrogen peroxide(h_(2)O_(2))is a green option for h_(2)O_(2)generation,the low activity and selectivity hindered the industry's *** recent years,the electrochemical synthesis of h_(2)O_(2)through a 2e-transfer method of oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)has piqued the interest of both academics and *** oxide catalysts have emerged as a novel family of electrochemical catalysts due to their unusual physical,chemical,and electrical *** this work,we first developed a Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite oxide(Pr_(2)NiO_(4+δ))as a highly selective and active catalyst for 2e-ORR to produce h_(2)O_(2).Molybdenum was introduced here to adjust the oxidation states of these transition metals with successful substitution into Ni-site to prepare Pr_(2)Ni1-xMoxO_(4+δ),and the molybdenum substitution improves the h_(2)O_(2)selectivity during the ORR process,in 0.1 M KOh,from 60%of Pr_(2)NiO_(4+δ)to 79%of Pr_(2)Ni_(0.8)Mo_(0.2)O_(4+δ)at 0.55 V versus RhE.A limiting h_(2)O_(2)concentration of_0.24 mM for Pr_(2)NiO_(4+δ)and 0.42 mM for Pr_(2)Ni_(0.8)Mo_(0.2)O_(4+δ)was obtained at a constant current of 10 mA/cm2 using a flow-cell reactor using a gas-diffusion electrode.
