Model for end-stage liver disease score versus Child score in predicting the outcome of surgical procedures in patients with cirrhosis

AIM:To determine factors affecting the outcome of patients with cirrhosis undergoing surgery and to compare the capacities of the Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) and model for end-stage liver disease(MELD)score to predict that outcome. METhODS:We reviewed the charts of 195 patients with cirrhosis who underwent surgery at two teaching hospitals over a five-year *** combined endpoint of death or hepatic decompensation was considered to be the primary endpoint. RESULTS:Patients who reached the endpoint had a higher MELD score,a higher CTP score and were more likely to have undergone an urgent *** patients undergoing elective surgical procedures,no statistically significant difference was noted in the mean MELD(12.8±3.9 vs 12.6±4.7,P=0.9)or in the mean CTP(7.6±1.2 vs 7.7±1.7,P=0.8)between patients who reached the endpoint and those who did *** mean scores were higher in the patients reaching the endpoint in the case of urgent procedures(MELD:22.4± 8.7 vs 15.2±6.4,P=0.0007;CTP:9.9±1.8 vs 8.5±1.8, P=0.008).The performances of the MELD and CTP scores in predicting the outcome of urgent surgery were only fair,without a significant difference between them (AUC=0.755±0.066 for MELD vs AUC=0.696±0.070 for CTP,P=0.3). CONCLUSION:The CTP and MELD scores performedequally,but only fairly in predicting the outcome of urgent surgical *** studies are needed to better define the factors capable of predicting the outcome of elective surgical procedures in patients with cirrhosis.

Reactive Stream Stabilization for Minimizing Transport of Phosphorus and Nitrogen from Agricultural Landscapes

A reactive stream stabilization (RS2) system based on aluminum as the adsorbent and garden mulch as the organic matter source was designed to minimize release of agricultural nonpoint source pollutants and installed along the bank of the Little Bogue Creek, MS in 2008. The scope of this research was to design, install and assess the performance of a field scale RS2 structure based on results from previous lab scale studies. Concentrations of alum and total organic carbon (TOC) in the RS2 test barrier and surrounding area were measured to evaluate design parameters of RS2 and the removal effectiveness was examined from soils and monitoring wells that were sampled in 2009. The mean concentration of Al from the reactive barrier was 2.1 mg/g and organic matter from the monitoring wells was 4.7 mg/L, values significantly greater than the surrounding area (p hlich-3 P and total phosphorus (TP) were decreased by 55% and 30%, and 40% of the TN and 51% of the nitrate in the ground water were removed through the RS2. The design objectives have been satisfied with the installed RS2 system and the initial sampling data shows effective nutrient removal.

Effect of 4% glycerol and low aeration on result of expression in <i>Escherichia coli</i>of Cin3 and three <i>Venturia inaequalis</i>EST’s recombinant proteins

The phytopathogenic fungus Venturia inaequalis causes scab of apple. Once this fungus penetrates the plant surface, it forms a specialized body called a stroma between the inner cuticle surface and the epidermal cell wall. A novel Venturia inaequalis 5704 (Cin3) and three expressed sequence tags (ESTs);38, 6987, and 4010 are strongly up-regulated in the early stages of infection. The CIN3 and three ESTs using two vectors pMAL-c2 and pET 21 were expressed in Escherichia coli. Recombinant proteins expression, solubility and yields were analyzed. 38, 5704 (Cin3) and 6987 re- combinant proteins were expressed in soluble form and while 4010 was expressed in inclusion bodies. Re- solution on native-PAGE, the recombinant proteins;38, 5704 (Cin3), 6987 were shown to be present in dimmer, tetramer and polymer. A method was de- veloped, consisting of induction of expression at va- rious temperatures, and using enriched broth with 4% glycerol together with slow shaking, led to a decrease in concentration of nascent polypeptide and production of soluble recombinant proteins of;38, 5704 (Cin3), 6987 and 4010. Resolution on native- PAGE, the recombinant proteins were shown to be present as monomer.

A large amount of real complex wastewaters are generated every year,which leads to a great environmental *** treatment technologies were deployed to remove the contaminants in the ***,these actual wastewaters have not been sufficiently treated due to their complex properties,high-concentration organics,incomplete utilization of hard-biodegradable substrates,the high energy input required,***,microbial electrolysis cells(MECs),a great potential technology,has emerged for various wastewater treatment,because not only do they demonstrate satisfactory performance during wastewater treatment,but they also generate renewable h2 as a clean energy *** previous reviews,this review introduced the characteristics of every complicated wastewater,and focused on analyzing and summarizing MEC development for wastewater *** performances of MECs were systematically reviewed in terms of organics removal,h2 production,Columbic efficiency,and energy *** performances for treating actual complex wastewaters and producing h2 can be optimized through operation parameters,electrode materials,catalyst materials,*** addition,the challenges and opportunities including complexity of wastewaters,instability of h2 production,robust microorganisms,effect of membrane on two-chamber MEC,and integration of MEC with other treatment processes were deeply *** for the technical feasibility,both environmental feasibility and economic feasibility also need to meet social *** review can indeed provide a basis for high-efficiency treatment and practical commercial applications of recalcitrant wastewaters via MECs in the future.

生态系统模型模拟是研究全球变化背景下区域气候变化对生态系统影响的重要方法之一,大多数气候模型预测全球大部分区域的NPP将增加,然而未来气候情景下近百年的长时间尺度下NPP及其稳定性的变化却鲜有研究。本数据结合建立在生理生态学基础上的CEVSA模型,通过强迫法发展了遥感驱动的生态系统过程模型——CEVSA-RS模型,采用的基于区域气候模型第4版(RegCM4.6)和CMIP5的hadGEM2-ES数据情景,输入驱动的气候变量,包括时、空间分辨率分别为0.25°,3 h的气温、降水量、云量和空气相对湿度,后将其处理为以旬为时间步长,0.1°空间分辨率,使用Chinacover2010的土地覆盖数据,模型输出为空间分辨率为0.1°的2006–2099年的NPP及其变化趋势,以及全期(2006–2099年)、前期(2006–2035年)、中期(2036–2065年)和远期(2066–2099年)NPP稳定性多年均值。通过共享本数据集,以期为积极开展减缓和适应气候变化行动,如双碳行动,提供具有科学和现实意义的数据参考。

Development of a modular, biocompatible thiolated gelatin microparticle platform for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications

The field of biomaterials has advanced significantly in the past *** the growing need for high-throughput manufacturing and screening,the need for modular materials that enable streamlined fabrication and analysis of tissue engineering and drug delivery schema has *** are a powerful platform that have demonstrated promise in enabling these technologies without the need to modify a bulk *** building block paradigm of using microparticles within larger scaffolds to control cell ratios,growth factors and drug release holds *** microparticles(GMPs)are a well-established platform for cell,drug and growth factor *** of the challenges in using GMPs though is the limited ability to modify the gelatin *** the present work,we hypothesized that by thiolating gelatin before microparticle formation,a versatile platform would be created that preserves the cytocompatibility of gelatin,while enabling post-fabrication *** thiols were not found to significantly impact the physicochemical properties of the ***,the thiolated GMPs were demonstrated to be a biocompatible and robust platform for mesenchymal stem cell ***,the thiolated particles were able to be covalently modified with a maleimide-bearing fluorescent dye and a peptide,demonstrating their promise as a modular platform for tissue engineering and drug delivery applications.
