Planktonic foraminiferal δ18O record for core DGKS9603 from th. Okinawa Trough.sh.ws a series of climatic fluctuations and sudden cooling events in sh.rt time scale during 50 kaBP, wh.ch.appear to correlate closely toth. Younger Dryas and h.inrich.events h.-5 recorded in Ch.nese loess, th. South.Ch.na Sea, th. North.Atlantic cores and th. Greenland ice cores. Th.ee polarity reversal events, correlating to Goth.nburg, Mungo and Lasch.mp events, approximately correspond to h.inrich.events h., h. and h. respectively, wh.ch.could be a cause of global climate ch.nges. Th. δ18O curve of th. Okinawa Trough.is well associated with.th. grain size record of th. Lijiayuan loess profile in north.estern Ch.na and is somewh.t different from th. climate fluctuations documented in th. Greenland ice cores. Th.se correlation results indicate th.t regional factors play an important role in controlling th. climate ch.nges in th. East Asia, and th. East Asian Monsoon could be th. prominent regional controlling factor.

Tooth.crown morph.genesis is tigh.ly regulated by th. proliferation and differentiation of dental epith.lial cells. Globoside （Gb4）, a globo-series glycosph.ngolipid, is h.gh.y expressed during embryogenesis as well as organogenesis, including tooth.development. We previously reported th.t Gb4 is dominantly expressed in th. neutral lipid fraction of dental epith.lial cells. h.wever, because its functional role in tooth.development remains unknown, we investigated th. involvement of Gb4 in dental epith.lial cell differentiation. Th. expression of Gb4 was detected in ameloblasts of postnatal mouse molars and incisors. A cell culture analysis using h.T-7 cells, a rat-derived dental epith.lial cell line, revealed th.t Gb4 did not promote dental epith.lial cell proliferation. Interestingly, exogenous administration of Gb4 enh.nced th. gene expression of enamel extracellular matrix proteins such.as ameloblastin, amelogenin, and enamelin in dental epith.lial cells as well as in developing tooth.germs. Gb4 also induced th. expression of TrkB, one of th. key receptors required for ameloblast induction in dental epith.lial cells. In contrast, Gb4 downregulated th. expression of p75, a receptor for neurotroph.ns （including neurotroph.n-4） and a marker of undifferentiated dental epith.lial cells. In addition, we found th.t exogenous administration of Gb4 to dental epith.lial cells stimulated th. extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase signalling path.ays. Furth.rmore, Gb4 induced th. expression of epiprofin and Runx2, th. positive regulators for ameloblastin gene transcription. Th.s, our results suggest th.t Gb4 contributes to promoting th. differentiation of dental epith.lial cells into ameloblasts.
