Brain cell death after intracerebral hemorrhage may be mediated in part by an apoptotic mechanism Colostrum is the first milk produced by mammals for their young. It plays an important role in protection and development by providing various antibodies, growth factors and nutrients, and has been used for various diseases in many countries. In the present study, we investigated the anti-apoptotic effects of bovine colostrum using organotypic hippocampal slice cultures and an intracerebral hemorrhage animal model. We performed densitometric measurements of propidium iodide uptake, a step-down avoidance task, Nissl staining, and caspase-3 immunohistochemistry. The present results revealed that colostrum treatment significantly suppressed N-methyI-D-aspartic acid-induced neuronal cell death in the rat hippocampus. Moreover, colostrum treatment improved short-term memory by suppressing hemorrhage-induced apoptotic neuronal cell death and decreasing the volume of the lesion induced by intracerebral hemorrhage in the rat hippocampus. These results suggest that colostrum may have a beneficial role in recovering brain function following hemorrhagic stroke by suppressing apoptotic cell death.

Tin(Sn^(2+))-based halide perovskites have been developed as the most prom-ising alternatives to their toxic Pb-based counterparts in optoelectronic ***,the facile tin vacancy formation and easy oxidization characteristics make Sn^(2+)-based perovskites highly p-doped with excessive hole concentrations,which significantly hinder their ***,we demonstrate a potent hole inhibitor of antimony fluoride(SbF_(3)),which possesses a higher hole-suppression capability than conventional tin fluo-ride(SnF_(2)).A small amount of SbF_(3) allows a wide range of hole-density modulation with no or less SnF_(2) addition,thus mitigating the negative effects of using only SnF_(2).A SnF_(2)/SbF_(3) co-additive approach was further developed to achieve high-performance Sn 2+perovskite thin-film transis-tors operated in the enhancement mode with a five-fold enhancement of the field-effect mobility and improved operational stability compared to using only SnF_(2).We expect that the SbF 3 hole suppressor and co-additive approach can provide opportunities for the development of high-efficiency Sn^(2+)-perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Usefulness of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy for the spasticity of the subscapularis in patients with stroke： a pilot study

Background There are not many studies about treatment of shoulder spasticity. Although botulinum toxin injection has been reported to be effective for shoulder spasticity, the effectiveness was judged by pain and limited motion change, but not the spasticity itself. Shoulder spasticity is considered to play an important role in hemiplegic frozen shoulder. However, the subscapularis muscle, unlike the pectoralis major muscle, is located deep beneath scapula, where conventional injection is difficult to perform. As extracorporeal shock wave therapy （ESWT） has been reported to be effective for spasticity relief, and we thought spasticity of subscapularis muscle located deep beneath the scapula would be a good candidate for ESWT treatment. This study was to evaluate the beneficial effects of radial ESWT （rESWT） on spastic subscapularis muscle in stroke patients. Methods This is an uncontrolled, prospective, unicenter, clinical pilot study. Stroke patients （n=57; mean age 55.4 years） with spastic shoulders were recruited between June 2011 and February 2012 at the University Rehabilitation Hospital. rESWT was administered to each patient every two or three days for two weeks （five total treatments）. Evaluation consisted of 11 measurements for each patient; at the start of each of the five treatments and once per week during the following six weeks. Spasticity was measured at external rotator muscles of the shoulder using the modified Ashworth scale （MAS）, and passive range of motion （ROM） of the shoulder in external rotation was recorded. Pain was measured using a visual analogue scale （VAS） during passive ROM of the shoulder in external rotation, and was additionally recorded for patients who preserved cognitive and communicative ability （Pain group）. Results Reduction in MAS and VAS and improvement of ROM during and after rESWT treatments were prominent compared to baseline. Background Smoking and other risk factors have been well known as important factors of variant angina or coronary artery spasm （CAS）. However, clinical features related to age on coronary artery spasm have been rarely evaluated. Methods We evaluated 3155 consecutive patients with insignificant coronary artery lesion. Patients underwent Acetylcholine （Ach） provocation test for induction of CAS. CAS was defined as 〉 70% luminal narrowing of coronary arteries during Ach provocation test. The results of Ach provocation test were compared among age groups; 〈 45 years （Group 1）, 45-54 years （Group 2）, 55-64 years （Group 3）, and 〉_ 65 years （Group 4）. Results Older patients had higher incidence of hypertension, diabetes, but lower incidence rate of current smoking, male sex compared with younger patients. Positive Ach provocation test finding was frequently showed with aging （47.36% vs. 58.3% vs. 62.6% vs. 61.5%; P 〈 0.001）. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that age, male, and myocardial bridge were independent predictors of CAS induced by Ach provocation test. Conclusion Our present study showed that old age was independent predictor for Ach-induced significant coronary artery spasm.

Background:Heat stress(HS)is one of the most important threats for the current poultry ***,many efforts have been made to ameliorate the adverse effect of HS on poultry production;however,physiological and molecular mechanisms pertaining to HS are still limited in ***,the objective of the current study was to investigate functional alterations based on individual and integrated transcriptomes in the liver and jejunal mucosa tissues of broiler chickens exposed to HS ***:Broiler chickens exposed to HS showed decreased growth performance and increased corticosterone concentrations in the *** the transcriptome analysis,the number of differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were identified in the liver and jejunal mucosa by HS *** the liver,genes related to amino acid oxidation,tryptophan metabolism,lipid metabolism,oxidative phosphorylation,and immune responses were altered by HS,which support the reason why heat-stressed poultry had decreased productive *** the jejunal mucosa,genes related to defense systems,glutathione metabolism,detoxification of xenobiotics,and immune responses were differently expressed by HS *** integrated transcriptome analysis with DEGs found in the liver and jejunal mucosa showed a considerable connectivity between the core nodes in the constructed networks,which includes glutathione metabolism,xenobiotic metabolism,carbon metabolism,and several amino acid ***:The core network analysis may indicate that increased requirement of energy and amino acids in the jejunal mucosa of broiler chickens exposed to HS conditions is likely compromised by increased oxidation and synthesis of amino acids in the ***,our results may provide comprehensive insights for molecular and metabolic alterations of broiler chickens raised under HS conditions,which can aid in the development of the novel strategies to ameliorate the negative effect of HS on poultry
