Enteroaggregative (EAEC) and atypical enteropathogenic (EPEC) Escherichia coli are important bacterial etiologic agents causing diarrhea among children. The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of virulence factors predisposes to diarrhea. In this study some virulence properties were examined on 11 EAEC and 8 EPEC strains identified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), isolated from stool samples of children were analyzed genotypically and phenoltypically for the prevalence of virulence factors. The most frequently detected factor was resistance to serum (94%), followed by curli fimbriae (78%), biofilm production (73%), and gene coding for Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) (68%). EPEC isolates showed at least three of the evaluated properties, while EAEC isolates showed at least two. The prevalence of these virulence factors between the two strains showed no statistical difference. This study showed the heterogeneity of the virulence profile of the isolates of EAEC and atypical EPEC strains and suggests that this diversity may influence in the disease severity.

The characteristics of a region and its environmental changes are directly associated with the characteristics of the climate and the changes that occur in it. The importance of the study of the climate of a region is widely known in agriculture, by the size of the impact that the climate has on the productivity and final quality of the products. From the studies of these spatial and temporal changes in climatic and environmental information, excellent results have been obtained in understanding the variability of atmospheric phenomena that occur throughout. The objective of the present work was to perform the climatic characterization of the Machado-MG region, analyzing data collected on the elements of the climate, applying methodologies that allow its spatialization, from geotechnology tools, more precisely, the techniques of interpolation and manipulation of spatial data in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment. For this purpose, it has been used the climatic data obtained from meteorological stations of the National Institute of Meteorology-INMET, located in the state of Minas Gerais, referring to the monthly and annual averages of a historical series of 55 years (1961-2015). The results obtained allowed to characterize the climate of the municipality, which presented an average temperature around 15°C to 25°C and with average rainfall between 100 - 200 mm in the rainiest periods. The relative humidity of the air presents throughout the year values in the average of 60% to 80%. From the spatialization maps of temperature, precipitation and relative humidity of the air, it becomes possible to analyze the spatial behavior of the climatic elements and thus to have the perception of the climate dynamics in the region.

Malnutrition in Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients can be present at the moment of diagnosis. The nutritional status is determinant for the treatment success and quality of life of the patients. The nutritional status gradually declines during treatment and the majority of patients undergoing treatment will need nutritional therapy. On the other hand, HNC, like other cancers, can induce a paraneoplastic syndrome that leads to cachexia. This cachexia status is most of the times the cause of death or the cause of treatment failure. So, early identification of malnutrition high risk patients is crucial to start an adequate nutrition support intervention in HNC patients. This study aims to identify HNC patients who present malnutrition or higher risk of malnutrition;to signalize variables that support early identification of high-risk patients of becoming malnourished and to establish a dynamic relationship between malnutrition risk in these patients and Quality of Life (QoL) impacts. For six months consecutive outpatients with HNC admitted at the Head & Neck Unity of Oncology Portuguese Institute—Porto were asked to participate in the research (n = 114). The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) cancer-specific HRQoL questionnaire-QLQ-C30 and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, MUST were used. At the moment of first presentation, 32 patients (28.1%) presented high-risk of malnutrition. HNC patients with oral cavity and oropharynx tumour locations, older, with low literacy or with BMI under 18.5 at the moment of diagnosis, represent a high-risk group. When HNC is considered, a dynamic and bi-directional connection between malnutrition and QoL is observed. Objective:To verify the trypanocidal effectiveness of aescin and aescin liposomes against Trypanosoma evansi in vitro and in ***:Aescin and aescin liposomes were used in vitro on trypomastigotes at different concentrations(0.5%,1.0%and 2.0%) and exposure times(0,1,3,6 and 9 h).In vivo tests were performed using mice as the experimental *** evansi infected mice were treated with aescin and aescin liposomes with doses of 60 and 100 mg/kg during 4 ***:The three concentrations tested in free form and nanoencapsulated showed trypanocidal activity in vitro,completely eliminating the parasites in small concentration after6 h of *** treated with aescin(100 mg/kg) and aescin liposomes(100 mg/kg)showed increase in longevity,however without curative ***:Active compounds present in natural products,such as aescin,may potentiate the treatment of trypanosomosis when used in association with other trypanocidal drugs.

Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome related to unintentional weight loss and to loss of muscle and fat mass. In head and neck cancer (HNC) its incidence is important and not only related to a deficient intake of food due to the impact of the disease in the vital functions. A complex disturbance in the normal metabolism of the patient promotes a persistent inflammatory state and a shifting in the metabolism balance toward a catabolic predominance affecting primarily the skeletal muscle. This leads to severe impairment of the functional, emotional and social status and quality of life of the patients that will compromise response to treatment and the disease prognosis. Understanding this deleterious syndrome and mainly identifying it in early stages of the disease is of a major importance in achieving better outcomes to head and neck cancer patients. This study pretends to identify clinical aspects related to cachexia in HNC in a clinical perspective for application on the routine clinical practice. In our study, 30 HNC patients were enrolled and evaluated in terms of nutritional values (actual and loss of weight in the past 6 months, body mass index (BMI), nutritional risk index (NRI), malnutrition universal screening tool), serum biochemical markers (albumin, total proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and myostatin) and health related quality of life (HRQoL) evaluation (using European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life questionnaires (QLQ): EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-HN43). A minimum follow-up of 48 months was considered for all patients. Our results showed that NRI is a good and sensitive index to identify cachexia. This index uses two parameters, one constitutional (loss of weight) and one biochemical (level of serum albumin). Reinforcement bar corrosion depends heavily on environment and the processes used. This study will address galvanic corrosion. Based on a case study of galvanic corrosion in a guyed power transmission tower, experiments using a number of methods were made on a small sample of eight poles chosen for excavation and visual inspection, to assess the various resulting diagnoses. Method that provided the best results both in location and classification of the points was adopted, where corrosion had already begun, considering the concern of finding a non-evasive process. To diagnose the status of the poles inserted in rock, after applying the methods, the main types of corrosion affecting them were listed and classified. With the results, the possible means of preventing and maintaining the structure were presented.

Lipases have important applications in biotechnological processes, motivating us to produce, purify, immobilize and perform a biochemical characterization of the lipase from Rhizomucor pusillus. The fungus was cultivated by solid state fermentation producing lipolytic activity of about 0.5 U/mL(4U/g). A partial purification by gel filtration chromatography in Se-phacryl S-100 allowed obtaining a yield of about 85% and a purification factor of 5.7. Our results revealed that the purified enzyme is very stable with some significant differences in its properties when compared to crude extract. The crude enzyme extract has an optimum pH and temperature of 7.5 ° C and 40 ° C, respectively. After purification, a shift of the optimum pH from 7 to 8 was observed, as well as a rise in optimumtemperature to 60 ° C and an increase in stability. The enzyme was immobilized on CNBr-Agarose and Octyl-Agarose supports, having the highest immobilization yield of 94% in the second resin. The major advantage of immobilization in hydrophobic media such as Octyl is in its hyper activation, which in this case was over 200%, a very interesting finding. Another advantage of this type of immobilization is the possibility of using the derivatives in biotechnological applications, such as in oil enriched with omega-3 as the results obtained in this study display the hydrolysis of 40% EPA and 7% DHA from sardine oil, promising results compared to the literature.
