Nothofagus pum.lio forests in Tierra del Fuego are the southernm.st forests in the world,where extrem. clim.te conditions represent a challenge to attain sustainable forest *** forestry was proposed as an alternative to increase the species conservation in m.naged ***,we synthetized results related to the im.lem.ntation of a variable retention harvesting based on a com.ination of aggregate patches and dispersed retention during the last 18 years com.aring with other silviculture proposals(e.g.,shelterwood cuts)and control treatm.nts(prim.ry unm.naged forests).We sum.arized the results for(i)sawm.ll operations,(ii)tim.er yield,(iii)overstory stability,(iv)forest structure,(v)m.croclim.te and natural cycles,(vi)natural regeneration dynam.cs(flowering,seeding,foraging,recruitm.nt,growth,and m.rtality),and(vii)biodiversity(m.m.als,understory plants,m.stletoes,birds,arthropods,m.sses,lichens,and fungi).In general,aggregate patches m.intained forest structure and m.cro-environm.ntal variables,and slightly increased biodiversity and forest reproduction variables com.ared to unm.naged prim.ry *** the contrary,dispersed retention decreased forest structure variables and greatly increased biodiversity(richness and abundance)when it was com.ared to unm.naged prim.ry *** conditions are influenced by variable retention harvesting,but direction and m.gnitude of the effect depend and differ according to retention *** this,biodiversity taxa greatly differed am.ng groups depending on retention *** general,the species assem.lages in aggregate patches were sim.lar to those found in prim.ry unm.naged forests,while they were significantly m.dified in the dispersed *** occurred due to(i)local extinction of som. original species,(ii)the introduction of native species from.the surrounding environm.nts,or(iii)the invasion of exotic *** silvicultural m.thod has been a useful tool to conserve biodiversity and ec

Background： Understory plants represents the largest com.onent of biodiversity in m.st forest ecosystem. and plays a key role in forest *** their im.ortance, the influence of overstory-layer com.osition on understory plant diversity is relatively poorly understood within deciduous-evergreen broadleaved m.xed *** aim.of this work was to evaluate how tree overstory-layer com.osition influences on understory-layer diversity in three forest types（m.nospecific deciduous Nothofagus pum.lio（Np）, m.nospecific evergreen Nothofagus betuloides（Nb）, and m.xed ***（m. forests）, com.aring also between two geographical locations（coast and m.untain） to estim.te differences at landscape ***： We recorded 46 plant species： 4 ferns, 12 m.nocots, and 30 ***-layer com.osition influences the herb-layer structure and diversity in two different ways： while m.xed forests have greater sim.larity to evergreen forests in the understory structural features, deciduous and m.xed were sim.lar in term. of the specific com.osition of plant *** pure stands were the m.st diverse, m.anwhile evergreen stands were least *** of exclusive species of m.xed forest could represent a transition where evergreen and deciduous com.unities m.et and ***, landscape has a m.jor influence on the structure, diversity and richness of understory vegetation of pure and m.xed forests likely associated to the m.gnitude and frequency of natural disturbances, where m.untain forest not only had highest herb-layer diversity but also m.re exclusive ***： Our study suggests that m.xed Nothofagus forest supports coexistence of both pure deciduous and pure evergreen understory plant species and different assem.lages in coastal and m.untain *** the m.xture of canopy patch types within m.xed stands will be im.ortant for conserving the natural patterns of understory plant com.osition in southern beech m.xe

A proposed Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the base of the m.ddle Ordovician Series： The Niquivil section, Precordillera of San Juan, Argentina

The Niquivil section, Argentine Precordillera, fulfills m.st of the requirem.nts for a Global Stratotype Section and Point （GSSP） for the base of the m.ddle Ordovician Series. It has excellent conodont biostratigraphy in a continuous succession of uniform.lithology, is readily accessible, and the critical interval is not tectonically affected. The position of the Lower/m.ddle Ordovician Series boundary in the Central Precordillera is placed at the m.ddle part of the San Juan Form.tion, an open-platform.carbonate unit. The Niquivil section is proposed as a GSSP for the base of the m.ddle Ordovician, which is m.rked by the FAD of the conodont Cooperignathus aranda （Cooper）. It occurs in level NCA, at the upper part of the Oepikodus evae Zone （overlapping upperm.st records of O. evae in association with other guide species）; i.e., 100.15 m.above the base of the reference section. The auxiliary Pena Som.ria section from.northern Precordillera records graptolites of the lower （but not lowest） m.ddle Ordovician in the Isograptus victoriae m.xim.s Zone, few m.ters above the proposed boundary biohorizon. The range of C. aranda can be correlated with the I. victoriae lunatus Zone up to the lower part of the Undulograptus austrodentatus Zone in diverse sections of the world. C. aranda presents cosm.politan distribution and occurs in virtually all environm.nts. The proposed GSSP preserves a carbon-isotope record that provides an auxiliary m.rker of potential global application. Radiom.tric dating of K-bentonite sam.les, interbedded with carbonate strata yielding lower records of C. aranda, were recovered from.the auxiliary Talacasto section in Central Precordillera （469.8 ±2.3 m., U-Pb SHRIm. dating）.

Taking advantage of the potential of m.senchym.l strom.l cells in liver regeneration:Cells and extracellular vesicles as therapeutic strategies

Cell-based therapies for acute and chronic liver diseases are under continuous progress. m.senchym.l stem.strom.l cells(m.Cs) are m.ltipotent cells able to m.grate selectively to dam.ged tissue and contribute to its healing and regeneration. The m.C pro-regenerative effect occurs due to their im.unom.dulatory capacity and their ability to produce factors that prom.te cell protection and survival. Likewise,it has been observed that part of their paracrine effect is m.diated by m.C-derived extracellular vesicles(EVs). EVs contain proteins,lipids and nucleic acids(DNA,m.RNA,m. RNA,lnc RNA) from.the cell of origin,allowing for intercellular com.unication. Recently,different studies have dem.nstrated that m.C-derived EVs could reproduce,at least in part,the biological effects obtained by m.Cbased therapies. m.reover,due to EVs' stability for long periods of tim. and easy isolation m.thods they have becom. a therapeutic option to m.Cs treatm.nts. This review sum.arizes the latest results achieved in clinical trials using m.Cs as cell therapy for liver regeneration,the role of EVs in liver physiopathology and the potential of m.C-derived EVs as intercellular m.diators and therapeutic tools in liver diseases.

Flowering and seeding patterns in pure and m.xed Nothofagus forests in Southern Patagonia

In polym.rs, the electronic activation energy depends on the fragm.ntation, crosslinking, dopants, m.isture and in general on the structure-environm.nt interaction. This has a special im.ortance in plasm. polym.rs because fragm.ntation and crosslinking are usually higher than in other polym.rs. In this work, DC electrical conductivity of polythiophene thin film. prepared by plasm. (pPTh) was studied using the m.yer-Neldel (m.) rule to calculate the characteristic m. energy and tem.erature as a function of m.isture and m.tallic dopants. The experim.ntal data for pPTh synthesized in different conditions indicated that Em.= 32 m.V and Tm.= 373 K, suggesting a therm.lly activated conduction m.chanism.however, in polym.r-m.tal m.trices with m.tal concentration higher than the percolation threshold, the conduction m.chanism.is different causing that the m. rule was only partially fulfilled. The congruence of the experim.ntal data with the m.ltiexcitation entropy m.del is discussed.
